I've seen fan theories that Jor-El and Lara were forced to say that by Zod, and others to highlight that Superman made the choice to be a hero more because of his human upbringing.
And the Supergirl thing is right on par with how she starts off in the comic her movie will be based on. She's not as altruistic as her cousin, is hot headed, and deals with the weight of watching Krypton be destroyed.
Great, thanks for that. I wondered and assumed their had to be a purpose for that Supergirl scene. Don't know her lore or that there was even a movie coming for her.

From what I've read, domestic box office is strong, international is really weak

I thought the movie was kind of rough at the beginning. I get not wanting to do the full origin story, but for what felt like quite a while we had very little context about character motivation. They just relied on the audience already being familiar with Clark/Superman, Lois, and Lex from the comics and earlier iterations, and that only goes so far. For a Superman story to work, you really have to relate to Clark, and he was in Superman mode for most of the first act (even the first apartment scene when I guess he was technically Clark).
And then you introduce the broader and less well known DC characters, and again, I just felt like I needed more context when they were introduced.

A couple of questions for the people who know more about the universe:
1. Did Superman create the Super-robots, or did they come down with him in his spaceship? This is the first time I've ever seen then, and I've never thought of Superman/Clark Kent as a scientist/inventor like Tony Stark, so these things were a bit confusing.
2. Are any of the Justice Gang meant to be taken seriously as Super Heroes? The only one I've ever heard of is Green Latern, but based off the Ryan Reynolds movie and the jokes in The Lego Movie, I am starting to get the impression that he's not really to be taken seriously, and that all the other DC superheroes basically laugh at him.
3. Is it comic-accurate for Lex to be an inventor/scientist? I've always just thought of him as generic rich dude who wants to conquer the world. Almost like a Bond villain.

1. Generally the Superman robots are a package deal with the Fortress of Solitude and usually a creation of Jor-El.
2. Hawkgirl and Mr. Fantastic are both very efficient at their jobs in the movie. Fillion's Guy Gardner - usually kind of a D*bag Green Lantern of the three main earthly GL's is clearly there for comic relief, but in theory GL could potentially be the strongest of all of all the superheroes. Like the Engineer, his power is only limited by his mind's ability to create.
3. Lex is definitely an inventor. That's why Superman infuriates him - because his powers are all just a fluke from being on a different planet than where he was born; granted Luthor is filthy rich, but considers his mind the real weapon.

Something subtle that I liked was that Perry White in particular and the whole Planet staff in general was never even remotely nervous about threat to Metropolis, including the giant time / space rift thing. And it makes sense, because Superman would have made their building and staff a top priority to save even before he started dating Lois. I guess that might also be why so many people are just standing around watching the Kaiju instead of running like hell.
It reminds me of a panel in Red Son where Premiere Superman and Wonder Woman are hanging out and he says people don't even wear seatbelts anymore because they know Superman (way more powerful in that version) will show up to save them if they get in a bad wreck.
that scene with him calmly and smoothly crushing the enemies in the desert. Amazing scene.PatAg said:
