Just got back from watching this w/ my daughter. We both really enjoyed it. I'm not a big anime or manga fan, but my daughter has been into this series and has watched it all the way through on Neflix multiple times. She was begging me to take her, so I watched the series a few months ago to catch up, and to my surprise I enjoyed it quite a bit.

It picks up right where the season 4 ended, so don't go see it unless you have watched the series or read the manga or you'll be lost. Also, it's the 1st of a trilogy of films that wrap up the series.

Someone give a show synopsis please. I haven't anime'd since Dragon Ball Z.

That's tough because there is quite a few seasons leading up to the movie.

Well, if you've watched Dragon Ball Z Abridged, you'll appreciate this.

Here's a good series summary that should catch anyone up.

I guess what I meant is, what's the premise of the show? At least season 1. What's it about and should I dive in

Demon Slayer is a really fun show, probably my second favorite anime on Netflix after Castlevania. Highly recommend it to anyone that's remotely interested in this kind of thing.

Thanks all for the heads up on needing to watch the series. I thought about seeing this, but didn't know if I needed background.

From Wikipedia:

In Taisho era Japan, a secret organization known as the "Demon Slayer Corps" has waged a war against demons for centuries. Demons are former humans who possess supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, rapid regeneration, and unique powers referred to as "Blood Demon Arts". Demons can only be killed if they are exposed to direct sunlight, decapitated with weapons crafted from an alloy called Nichirin, or injected with a poison extracted from wisteria flowers.

In contrast, the Demon Slayers are entirely human but employ specialized elemental breathing techniques known as "Breathing Styles". These techniques grant them superhuman strength, heightened abilities, and increased resilience that enable them to fight demons effectively. The most formidable Demon Slayers are known as the "Hashira" and gain this title through multiple advancements in the Corps' ranks, culminating in killing fifty demons at the highest level or a member of the Twelve Kizuki.

Season 1 follows the main character, Tanjiro, as he joins the Demon Stayer Corps following a demon attack on his family.

Akaza had a crazy origin story though, I was not expecting that. I saw this on Friday and it definitely felt like 2.5 hours by the end. I think they put more into Akaza's back story than any hashira I can remember in the series, including Tanjiro. That's not a complaint, I thought it was pretty cool how they laid out his motivations. FYI his master was voiced by Channing Tatum who is a big fan of the show.

After they decapitated Akaza, after a crazy long fight and back story, and then he started to grow his head back due to sheer will power and hatred I was really frustrated with how long it was taking. Another gripe is that the infinity castle shifts as number 4 plays her instrument, which we've already had to see before when they fought the demon with drums in his body which made the rooms move when he played them. Sorry for picking nits but if this movie was 30 minutes shorter I would have been happier.

Akaza's story is tragic. I think they spent so much time on it to generate some sympathy for him and explain/justify his actions after he regained his memories. Doma, on the other hand, was an just an evil person his whole life and the worst, IMO.

Anyway, my main gripe, if you can call it that, is that we didn't get enough Inosuke as he's my favorite character. Fortunately, he should get a lot more time in the next two films.

I went and saw this with my daughter and I'd seen about a season and a half with her, but she had seen it all. She thought it was a good continuation of the series. But I thought it wasn't a great movie. Had they put a bit more effort into it being a movie instead of a continuation of a series then it could have been great.

My advice would be to cut the flashbacks in half. Try to focus on flashbacks that contribute to the fight like Akaza's backstory of perseverance contributing to him surviving without a head or Tanjiro's flashbacks to his dad contributed to him figuring out a new technique to defeat Akaza. Meanwhile the flashbacks used in the Zenitsu and Shinobu flights were mostly pointless and boring to the main fight. These fights were cool though. I thought Shinobu's use of poison was cool, but I could have used some background on why she uses poison and where that came from. I'm sure that is explained in parts of the series I haven't watched yet, but I'm judging this on a movie. My daughter explained that story and the Zenitsu backstory on the way home.

Also, almost anything that happened in the Infinity Castle that wasn't a fight was also boring. It was just mainly unnamed unknown characters running around with the same CG castle background until they ran into someone to fight. A few small changes to give those characters a purpose in this movie and it would have been a huge improvement to them continuing something that happened before this movie or setting up something for the next movie.

This is a new season of the show masquerading as a movie. Go in knowing that and you'll be fine.
