Just out of curiosity (not a catholic) how does one rise to be a front runner for pope? Is there a recruiting service like Rivals that assigns stars to various clergy across the globe?

Hoping as well for Robert Cardinal Sarah, I have his latest book "The Day is Now Far Spent".
His earlier book, "The Power of Silence" is next on my agenda.
Will know the result of the first vote in the next hour, they will have four votes tomorrow if needed.

It's typically guys that are in roles that allow them to become known among other Cardinals. It could also be Cardinals that have made significant theological contributions in writings and such

mostly popes come from the college of Cardinals though it is not a requirement. there's only at best guesses on who is likely to be the next pope. this will be a very interesting conclave given that it is the largest ever. Pope Francis elevated many more bishops to cardinal across the world than his predecessors. many of these cardinals have barely met each other or not at all.

we no longer have monarchs vetoing the decisions.

also, there is some credence that we get our first Asian or first African pope since the 5th century.

"The Power of Silence" is an excellent read. Like all of his books his complete devotion to answering Our Lord's call, "Follow Me", is evident. My family's prayer is for him to be our next Vicar of Christ; however, for now, that man is only known by Our Lord! Peace be with you.
