Praying for the new Pope like everyone. I do think his mission experience will factor into his papacy and frame our outlook moving forward as a church.

We are about the mission!

"On key topics, Cardinal Prevost says little but some of his positions are known. He is reportedly very close to Francis' vision regarding the environment, outreach to the poor and migrants, and meeting people where they are."

I think the details matter immensely here.

The views of Francis were Mother Earth and mass unchecked illegal immigration. I honestly know nothing about this new Pope but if it is indeed a continuity with Francis we are in for a rough time. Hopefully he is not

article said:

Francis brought him to Rome to serve as president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, as well as the head of the Dicastery for Bishops a powerful Vatican office that vets bishops around the world. Francis elevated him to cardinal in September 2023. Two years later, Francis made him a cardinal-bishop, the highest rank among cardinals.

He has kept a low profile in Rome, making his views on hot-button issues something of a mystery.

Could you hand pick a guy more, assuming it's all true?

I really like the name choice: Leo XIV. Off the top of my head, it reminds me of our last pope with that name and his encyclicals Rerum Nevarum (Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor), Quod Apostolici Muneris (On Socialism), and the dozen or so on the Holy Rosary. All of which are pertinent for today. It's my hope that this is much of his inspiration.

No point in acting shocked that we have someone similar to Francis. 107 out of the 134 electors were appointed by Francis.

Pray that the Lord and the Holy Spirit guide him and therefore the church in the most appropriate direction that the Lord sees fit

That is generally the case with almost every pope. They appoint a majority of the voting cardinals during their tenure.

There are so many rumors running now about is he going to be Francis 2.0. I am taking a wait and see approach. His Augustinian background gives me optimism.

"The Order of Saint Augustine's motto is "Anima una et cor unum in Deum", which translates to "One mind and one heart intent upon God". This motto reflects the core value of unity and devotion to God that characterizes the Augustinian spirit."

A focus on unity and increase devotion will be a good thing.

And as long as he doesn't create as much confusion with his public statements it will be a step in the right direction.

Outreach to the poor?! HERESY!
There's a world of difference between "outreach to the poor" and "preferential option for the poor."

I remember well Christ telling his followers not to be too kind to the poor.

I think Matt Walsh put things pretty well on X(quote below).
Quote:

If you aren't Catholic then you don't believe that this Pope was elected through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, so you'll troll through his twitter feed and analyze his selection through a modern political lens, as if he was just elected to a seat in the US senate rather than the Chair of Saint Peter.

If you are a believing Catholic then you do (or should) believe that his election is ordained by God. You view it through the lens of 2,000 years of Church history and the eternal will of the Almighty God. From that perspective, playing the gotcha game with old tweets is silly and bizarre.

This is why any conversation about the Pope on this site is destined to be disjointed, confused, and ultimately useless.
I think we would all do well to remember that the Pope's political views(which are his own) do not matter so much as his teachings on faith and morals(which come from God and are infallible).

I agree with Matt Walsh. Thanks for posting that take. Most people are looking at his election purely through secular lens. I'll wait and see.

One important thing to point out, the pope is not infallible in his teachings on faith and morals unless he is writing "Ex Cathedra". This has only been done twice in the past 250 years. Pope Francis teachings on climate change were not "infallible statements".

Indeed you're right, friend. It always bothered me when non-Catholics(or even some Catholics, unfortunately) complained about Pope Francis' comments about immigration or economics and failed to understand that he was simply expressing his own personal opinions, not Catholic teachings.

It's not even just about them being bad people. It's about who they are, what family they were from, why they wanted to be pope and who wanted them to be pope. The history of the church was pretty terrible for awhile. For a period some weren't even actually priests

I believe it was Pope Benedict who said, in speaking about papal elections, that the holy spirit is there to guide us but we have free will not to listen. There are certainly times when the church has not been led by men who were listening to the spirit. It does not mean that God could not and would not work through them in ways we cannot understand.

In the Book of Numbers, God spoke through a talking donkey. If he can do that, he can speak through a bad Pope or a series of bad Popes. The Church has survived.

It is not a requirement that one be a priest to become pope. Any baptized Catholic male can be elected.

The lesson from the corrupt, debaucherous popes is that the Church survived through it all.

Forgive my negativity.

Saint Pope John Paul II is the STANDARD in my opinion. He fought against fascism and communism in his life. He made me proud to be RC like Reagan made me proud to be an American. There were no longer gas lines and the direction and revitalization of the Church was underway. I was spoiled with their greatness and humility.

Let me guess - you got your church history degree from Wikipedia? Did you catch the part about what St. Peter did prior to the crucifixion and then going on to become the first Pope? Not sure what's funny about God guiding the choosing of the successor of St. Peter through the Holy Spirit.

I grew up catholic going to church two or three times a week, having prayer groups at home and all that. Parents took me to Rome and the Vatican twice as a kid/ teen. I went back twice as an adult as I was figuring out life for myself. I will admit that my posts here were a little trollish but I did mean what I said. I have a lot of issues with the Catholic Church and don't consider myself catholic anymore but I also don't have a problem with individuals being catholic themselves. Have a good day

Pretty obvious he's referring to some of the rotten popes we've had

A better retort might have been God guides, the men choose. Sometimes the men don't listen and they screw it up
