League has never been profitable, losing an estimated $10MM annually.

It should just be point and laugh with these clowns, at this point.

"Pay us what you owe us"

I don't think the players will ever be able to come up with the money they would owe the league in this case.

Colbert found out that his worth to CBS was not, in fact, unlimited. The players are about to learn the same lesson.

They should go ahead and strike if they don't think they're being treated fairly. Seriously. Walk off the court until you get what you want. We'll all wait with you.

I had a choice of WNBA All Star game last night, and either CSI Miami, Bluebloods or Matlock or a baseball game on Fox. I chose Matlock.

Men and women watch men's sports. Neither men nor women watch women's sports. The WNBA got a huge gift in Caitlin Clark in term of viewership. They need to build on that gift.

Will say from all the chatter on internet about Clark and all her nemesis's problems with her, that they are marketing it like a Pro wrestling circus- and smut and controversy sells. Folks may tune in to see who gets smacked around and depending on who you are behind, cheer for good or evil!

There is no path to profitability for the WNBA. It is only a matter of time. Whether that is 5, 10, 20 or 50 years, I have no idea, but a crap product with no fans and no ability to make money will eventually be killed off. Lousy source, but I think they are still managing to lose over $40 million a year, despite revenues going to around a billion dollars supposedly.

"We have the most participation in league history. I think we had close to 40 players in our league meeting," Collier said. "I think it just sends a really strong message that we're standing really firm on the certain areas that we feel really strongly about that we need to improve on, and I think we got that message across."

So glad they got the message across, but can anybody interpret this and tell me what the message actually is?

They should say " Ok, lets set up a repayment plan. The NBA has several repayment options "

The league will turn a profit next year when their new tv deal kicks in….but that still includes the NBA subsidies.

I laughed at this news last night and did some research.

First….you are never "owed" anything in life. The league isn't withholding payments or anything.
If you want to ***** and make a point say "pay us what we're worth" or something like that.

That said, the players are likely to win their argument.

WNBA share of basketball revenue is 10%
NBA share of basketball revenue is 50%

So NBA tickets are going to have to get more expensive in order to subsidize more revenue for women?

Women's gymnastics and ice skating are more entertaining than the men's equivalent. So I wouldn't agree with a blanket statement that women's sports aren't watched.

Whoever makes the money decisions for this joke of a league (I guess the NBA) will capitulate because it will look like racism/sexism if they don't.

They can't prop her up though. It will upset the community too much.

Clark is a novelty in terms of ratings/viewership.

No one's watching wnba long term.

Nobody actually knows what the WNBA is worth because their largest revenue stream (TV rights) is negotiated as part of the NBA tv deal.

Caitlin Clark has significantly raised the profile of the league by herself and the league might actually be profitable on a standalone basis.

The latest tv deal negotiated last year and kicking in either this year or next year raises the amount allocated to the WNBA from ~$50m to $200m annually (and potentially up to $250m). While $200m sounds high to me if the these were negotiated separately, the NWSL recently negotiated a $40-50m per year contract, and I'm fairly confident the NWSL has significantly less viewers than the WNBA.

Also, the WNBA has 3 expansion teams in the works and each team is paying $250m to enter the league.

My theory of the case is the NBA overallocated tv deal revenue to the WNBA in order to divest in the next 5 years, but I'm also not sure the league will be completely unprofitable going forward.

They are equal!! Getting paid to play a game just like NBA, NFL.
They could be going to work like most of us and not get to jet around and play roller derby drama on the court-lol, vaudeville didn't pay much either!

Go ahead and pay them more. That's not going to change the fact that they count dozens of fans in the stands for each game, no one watches on TV, and their losses will only increase.

And yet, they'll still be a thing because of reasons.

One of my clients bought a professional sports franchise a few years ago. They literally made him take ownership of that city's WNBA team as well in order to approve the purchase of the "real" team he was buying.

His first encounter with the WNBA team is an entirely different story that opened his eyes to the culture of that league. He said those women acted 5x more entitled than his other team's players who are on one of the most storied and accomplished franchises in sports history.

I lost interest long ago in pro sports due to the entitled and bratty nature of a lot of the athletes, across multiple sports. Sure, there are still some athletes who are incredible talents and also outstanding on a personal level, but they are increasingly the exception rather than the rule.

The problem with the pro sports revenue model is a lot of the cost gets socialized. Even though I don't watch, some portion of it will get wrapped into my Youtube TV subscription, multiplied by millions of others who don't watch but get the joy of indirectly paying something for it.

They can act like brats and get away with it because they'll still get paid.

Very different than the individual employee and boss relationship, where that kind of behavior will send you packing in a New York minute.
