Revenue doesn't matter, it is only profit that matters. You can have high revenue but even higher costs, so there is a loss instead of a profit.

This is what happens when clueless women talk about business.

next media contract for wnba is gonna be for a lot more money bc of clark.

Clark the golden goose for them but they jealous and will find a way to screw it up and put her out of the season or worse.

Caitlin Clark after spitting out another bloody tooth - I'm fine, I'm good <cough>, just part of the game, <cough> comes with the territory

Yep, she is a dumbass. What revenue does she think they generate?

not to derail, but then you have to argue against revenue sharing in college sports as the vast majority of athletic departments operate at a loss.

So according to Google AI, WNBA loses about $40M~$50M a year. I guess those players are asking for the league to reduce their salary to cover the losses?

I have to admit, I really enjoy this topic. It's even better than hearing the soccer chicks whine about pay.

The best part is that I couldn't possibly give a sh** about it from any angle. This problem was caused by libs and has to be fixed by libs, but there is no solution a lib can implement that isn't ruhtarded or will just cause more libs to lose money, or likely both.

It's spectacular.

WNBA is a pro league. College sports is not. Though it is slowly beginning to look like they are.

Nobody actually knows what the WNBA is worth because their largest revenue stream (TV rights) is negotiated as part of the NBA tv deal.

Caitlin Clark has significantly raised the profile of the league by herself and the league might actually be profitable on a standalone basis.

The latest tv deal negotiated last year and kicking in either this year or next year raises the amount allocated to the WNBA from ~$50m to $200m annually (and potentially up to $250m). While $200m sounds high to me if the these were negotiated separately, the NWSL recently negotiated a $40-50m per year contract, and I'm fairly confident the NWSL has significantly less viewers than the WNBA.

Also, the WNBA has 3 expansion teams in the works and each team is paying $250m to enter the league.

My theory of the case is the NBA overallocated tv deal revenue to the WNBA in order to divest in the next 5 years, but I'm also not sure the league will be completely unprofitable going forward.

NWSL is smaller per game than the WNBA, but I'd wager that will flip in the next 5 years.

The NWSL demographics and the players are just more relatable to girls than the WNBA.

Dave Portnoy calls out 'morons' who think WNBA players shouldn't get more money
https://nypost.com/2025/07/20/sports/dave-portnoy-calls-out-morons-who-think-wnba-players-shouldnt-get-more-money/

Dave Portnoy is fed up with those who believe WNBA players don't deserve a higher payday.

In the wake of players wearing warmup shirts that said "Pay Us What You Owe Us" at Saturday's All-Star Game, the Barstool Sports founder and owner made his stance clear with a lengthy post and subsequent video on X on Sunday.

"I don't know how anybody in the world with a brain, and maybe my brain is just bigger than most, can rationally say women don't deserve more money at this point," Portnoy said in the video.

Is he lying that the WNBA makes money?

That guy needs his ass kicked, is what he needs.

One of my clients bought a professional sports franchise a few years ago. They literally made him take ownership of that city's WNBA team as well in order to approve the purchase of the "real" team he was buying.

His first encounter with the WNBA team is an entirely different story that opened his eyes to the culture of that league. He said those women acted 5x more entitled than his other team's players who are on one of the most storied and accomplished franchises in sports history.

Trying to figure this one out. The only NBA sales from a couple years ago are the Suns, Bucks, and Mavs and none of them would be considered storied and accomplished. The Celtics and Lakers sold this year and definitely fit that bill but weren't sold years ago.

The LA wnba team has the same ownership group as the Dodgers. That transaction was ~10 years ago. Also, the NY wnba team has the same owners as the nets which would be my other guess.

yeah I figured this wouldn't have been to hard to narrow down….

Dodgers seems most likely, but that was 13 years ago, which I don't think anyone would consider "a few years ago" , and Nets don't qualify as storied/accomplished. Maybe it's an NHL team.

Some MLS teams have associations with WNSL teams or similar ownership groups.

Could have also been Baseball?

There's a simple rule of valuation that I go by and teach my kids.

Q: What is something worth?
A: The highest amount that someone else is willing to pay for it. Nothing more nothing less.

This applies everywhere. And by this definition, a jug of water can be more valuable than the biggest diamond. When you are in a hot desert and about to die of thirst, I will pay more for the water than the diamond.

So ladies, let's see how valuable you really are. Go find out how much someone is willing to pay for your "talents". We all have to do that every day of our lives, it is time you see reality too.

The WNBA is just like any other minor league sport -- baseball, hockey, etc.

The individual teams may have a core group of die-hard fans and sponsors and maybe even break even financially every now and then. But they will never capture the sporting public's attention because they are minor league.

Back in the day, I was a huge fan of the Houston Aeros, who drew great crowds to the Summit and competed and won championships in the IHL and AHL. But the team's fan base was STILL miniscule compared to the Astros or Rockets.

Because they were minor league.

It's great to have zero dog in this fight, but I will suggest that the major investors in the WNBA did not understand modern women.

Or the Houston Comets, they won 4 championships in a row and still no one cared and don't even exist anymore.

Most of the major investors are all old rich powerful white men who got a lot of money and success in their careers and are bored and wanted something more - adulation. To be a champion of a "marginalized" group. The best of those groups are women. They were willing to spend money doing that. But the women they were helping grew swollen heads and overestimated their value egged on by social media women with "you go girl!" and "pay up!". If men made such demands, they would just shut the league and tell the players to GTFO. The women still get to beach and moan and get an audience.

Fools don't realize that all sports people are basically just performers. They do their thing, people pay to watch. Like actors. No difference. If people don't like to watch you do your thing, you are out. No one pays for effort or "hard work".

You are right. I am just chomping popcorn as long some woke pol won't use our tax dollars to prop up the WNBA.

You are being too generous, my 3A high school boys varsity team in timbuktu West Texas from the 80's and early 90's would have smoked them if they play that lazy and shoot that sloppy.

Caveat is that a true market value of something is what a willing but not required buyer will pay (from a willing but not required seller). Here, the big buyers are essentially being forced to buy the product. tv rights and advertisers for example. The tv rights had to be wrapped in with nba. In one posters example here, the team had to be wrapped into another teams. Advertisers probably feel the need through social justice or whatever.

So with your example, someone in the desert is forced to pay a lot for that water. These wnba players then think that price of the water should be the real value. It ain't.

Linkedin simps are making it all about "revenue" instead of profit. Either they are being clever and playing up to clueless women, or they are stupid themselves. I don't know how they expected these ladies to be paid more. From money that does not exist?

If a business brings in $1000 as revenue and costs are $1200, the business is left with negative $200. No money for anyone!

It's an analogy so there will be some differences. The point I am making is value of a good changes and can be different based on the situation. A man playing 2 hours in the NBA is worth more than a woman playing 2 hours in the WNBA. So he is paid more. The fact that they both put in 2 hours of work makes no difference.

NBA should spin off WNBA as its own league. Let's see how they survive on their own. Then I demand that players make 100% of the revenue!
