97, damn good run.

Fair winds and following seas, Capt. Lovell.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Poor Mr Lovell. He was scheduled to land on the moon but the trip was aborted.

Hard to believe the movie with Hanks was 30 years ago. Amazing smarts and mental toughness to hold that team together and get his ship safely back to earth. I don't think they make em that way anymore.

For those wondering which Apollo astronauts are left,

Russell Schweickart- Apollo 9 (Earth Orbit)
Buzz Aldrin- Apollo 11*
Fred W. Haise- Apollo 13
David Scott- Apollo 15*
Charlie Duke- Apollo 16*
Harrison Schmitt- Apollo 17*

* means walked on the moon.

If one wants to include anyone who flew on the Apollo spacecraft, which includes Skylab and the ASTP, there would be 4 more.

Joseph Kerwin- Skylab 2
Jack Lousma- Skylab 3
Edward Gibson- Skylab 4
Vance Brand- ASTP

For sure. On Gemini 7, spending 2 full weeks stuck in a sardine can is unbelievable.

Life well lived! RIP Astronaut Lovell and thank you for your service to the country. Guess this requires the obligatory viewing of Apollo 13... a great movie, too!

More time has passed since the movie than between the events depicted and the movie itself.

My parents had dinner with him during Nixon's 1968 inauguration. Dad '45 said he was an engaging storyteller… mother was just plain smitten. Godspeed Commander.

I had a chance to have lunch with Gene Cernan in 2005. He was incredibly interesting to talk with and very gracious with his time. I asked him what he found more nerve-wracking space flight or carrier operations. His answer was, "It is a lot harder to be behind the boat at night in bad weather than to go into space!"

All of these guys had incredibly interesting careers prior to becoming astronauts. We are losing a group of great aviators and explorers.

RIP Capt. Lovell.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Jim Lovell is a shining example of courage, leadership, and grace under friggin big pressure. Being the center seat of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, he kept it together and guided his crew through one of NASA's most effed up situations, turning near-certain disaster into a triumph of ingenuity and teamwork. They were still using slide rules and Big Chief tablets. If the movie was accurate what they did with those scrubbers was nothing short of miraculous. No wonder Lovell was a veteran of four spaceflights, Lovell's calm demeanor, quick thinking, and unwavering dedication to his crew and mission earned him a place among the most respected astronauts in history. His career stands as a testament to human resilience and the unyielding spirit of exploration. Even though Buzz Aldrin is my favorite hero Jim Lovell is up there too.

My parents met him in Houston soon after he returned from Apollo 13. The Grovers invited them to a fund raiser of some sort at the big hotel at the time near the Astrodome.

According to my mom he was very unassuming and quiet and very gracious. Wish we had more men like him now.

There's a great documentary on netflix that dropped last year called Apollo 13: Survival and it was incredible.

Highly recommend. I might rewatch it this weekend.

Sad day to lose a hero like Jim Lovell. What a life. His wife passed last year of I remember correctly.

Please check out the BBC podcast called "13 Minutes to the Moon." Chronicles the moon landing and also the Apollo 13 mission. Great interviews.

At one of the CAF airshows at Ellington Field in the late 80's he attended a dinner we were at. He and Bob Hoover and Hoot Gibson were all at this get together and told some stories. It was a cool experience. He was a very likable fellow.

My late father, Navy57, was OPSO aboard the Apollo XIII recovery ship, USS Iwo Jima. He relayed the story that despite the built-in excuse their heroic return journey gave him, Jim Lovell was happy to come down & give a 2-hour+ briefing to the wardroom. Lovell was entertaining, engaging and funny... all of 18 hours after reentry.

An amazing guy- trivia: Pete Conrad's nickname for him was,"Shaky", which cracks me up.

Well, I did not get to hear the segment on Fox/Siruis radio this week, but evidently going to the moon and then Mars is "racist".

But when we went to Johnson Space Center about12 years ago, the thought was that we were going back to the Moon as a "test run", to use to then shoot for Mars. But that was when the Obamunist was in office, so that money probably got sent to some 3rd world ****hole because muh climate (redistribution).

RIP Jim Lovel.

Think about Buzz Aldrin. The first man on the moon (along with Armstrong) is an amazing mindblowing thing to be. Being No 4 or 5 is great but the first pair is unforgettable. He is still around at 95 so he got to enjoy the adulation.

He definitely had the right stuff.

"When will we be going back and who will that be?"

Lovell's final words in the Apollo 13 movie. That was 30 years ago and over 50 years since the mission. Having lived to age 97, he was still unable to get his answers.

That's a tough one. I know it's movie dialog, but Tom Hanks line at the end of Apollo 13 gets me. We owed it to these men to go back in their lifetime.
