My mom and dad immigrated from Taiwan to the United States in 1975 and 1979 respectively. I am for legal immigration, but not the current massive immigration levels. For several reasons, the US needs to tame down the current immigration levels. Massive immigration causes traffic congestion, which would cause the quality of roads to decline faster. Also, the rapid increase has strained America's beleaguered schools, which literally don't have room for all these students. In addition, massive immigration would further tighten the supply of affordable housing for purchase or rent. Furthermore, there would be an increased demand for water, electricity, and other public services. Most importantly, there would be increased competition for jobs. Scaling back legal migration and cracking down on illegal immigration would ensure an improved quality of life for current US citizens.

Just some general observations from an old fart...

It's definitely not okay when Indians are brought in to take U.S.-based jobs as long as there are U.S. citizens capable of doing the same jobs at least as well. The H-1B program should not have anything to do with companies being allowed to pay less for talent. Regulating what our corporate overlords are allowed to do in the name of stockholder value isn't always a bad idea.

Most of the Indians who moved here won't assimilate much, and I don't think it's realistic to expect this process to happen quickly. It will take many years for most of those that choose to do so. If they're smart, they'll at least compromise and encourage their kids and grandkids to assimilate while still retaining the qualities of their culture/home life that contribute to their overall scholastic excellence.

Their kids and grandkids will be able to speak English clearly without an accent, and this should help reduce the barriers to assimilation. Personally, I work in the tech industry, and I'm always pleasantly surprised to meet an Indian whose accent doesn't make my eyes roll back in my head. I've noticed that as I get older, my tolerance for and ability to understand heavily accented English seems to be decreasing, and the Indian accent is one of the worst. Every time I hear "development" pronounced as "double-up-ment", a tiny part of my brain asks for permission to retire earlier than planned. Conversely, when I end up working with an Indian who speaks English clearly, it's such a pleasant surprise that I'm more engaged than usual in the conversation.

My FISD teacher wife thinks many "heritage citizens" in Frisco are simply failing their kids compared to the Indian parents. Generally speaking, it seems their priorities are out of whack. These parents value extracurricular activities and are highly involved in making sure their kids have everything they need to do their best when it comes to sports, etc., but they don't bring down the hammer like we did back in the day to ensure their kids are putting in the work to do their best scholastically. There are a lot of "cool moms" who no doubt love their kids, but good, well-rounded parenting has become less common. Sadly, our schools have lowered the bar due to lower expectations, which I consider ridiculous. Public education in Texas seems to be a slowly sinking ship, but what our government should do about it is another hot topic for debate.

We all (except Dems) agree that illegal immigration is bad, wrong and should be stopped.

But why are so many people forced to say that they want legal immigrants?
I see this issue with our Republican politicians too. I suspect it is because they don't want to be seen as racists or xenophobes. We don't need to open our country for anyone. That is also okay. We can be full, which we currently are. There is a time and place for legal immigration and it is our option to open or close.

People should be bold to openly say that they are not for any kind of immigration. Legal immigration actually means nothing. Dems can open it up to 1000000000000000 visas a year, entire India would be in the US and should we welcome them?

I'm good greatly curtailing legal immigration, but the trade off of that is that we have to be ok with a managed decline of the country as we de-populate.

Which I'm totally fine with, if done correctly. It's what Japan has opted to do under their current PM.

Granted, as soon as we get a Dem back in office we will be back to open borders and unfettered immigration so everyone should prepare themselves for that.

My mom taught AP calculus in a north Texas high school that slowly got swallowed up by H1-B kids. The absurd amount of grade grubbing and willingness to do anything to get an advantage (up to an including cheating) was so rampant that she finally just said, "eff these idiots" and retired.

India wasn't India in 1700, it was the Mughal Empire which didn't include much of now southern India and did include modern Bangladesh, Pakistan, and part of Nepal and Afghanistan. There was no cohesive culture or language and nobody could communicate with each other as almost nobody could read/write and very few could speak a second language. Moreover, GDP prior to the Industrial Revolution was almost entirely driven by a combination of natural resources and population. India was rich in both. The GDP PER CAPITA in 1700 of the Mughal Empire was less than a third to a fourth of the European powers. And the wealth that did exist was concentrated within the upper hierarchy of the empire. 99% of Indians were a kind of poor that doesn't even exist in much of the world today, and a kind of poor that even most modern poor Indians don't experienced.

The only reason India is a semi functional, unified nation today is because of the language and systems of education/government brought by the British. Literally EVERYTHING useful and functional about their nation today operates under rules and decorum introduced by the British. Similar to the European slave trade, while it was awful at the time their descendants are much better off than they would have been had it never happened. These people couldn't even speak to one another until the British empire forced them all to learn English.

The sad reality is that the White population in DFW as a whole is under 40% and falling fast. So now even suburban and rural areas are being overtaken.

The days of supermajority White, Christian, conservative suburbs is effectively over in DFW. If that's what you want, you can find it in Oklahoma, Idaho, Utah, east Oregon, or parts of New England. Central Austin including downtown is very White, but it's also filled with the most rabid, insanely stupid libs you'll ever meet. Texas is finished and will likely turn blue within 15 years or less.

The speed that this demographic decline happened is genuinely shocking. I moved into Willow Bend in Plano in 2002 when that neighborhood was new and compared to Beverly Hills/Highland Park.

Plano West and Shepton were A-rated White schools. Everyone was rich, conservative, Christian and the neighborhood was 90% White. To see what has become of it today is sickening.

The only immigrants I want would by highly skilled people in an occupation for which we have a shortage of people, And when they come here, the must already be fluent in English.

Ugh this is a depressing read. Our son lives in Richardson, which I've never been a fan of, but I have noticed the young white families have moved in their in droves. You go to any park or t-ball game and it's a bunch of white families.

You are right. The white/US business owners sold us all out for cheaper labor. The white/US politicians are more at fault for not putting in laws to prevent this. They joined in on the grift and r@pe of America.
Everyday Eddie got screwed and he rationalized it with "free markets" and "we are conservative capitalists" since he isn't too bright anyway.

One day all of you will agree that I was right. It's just taking some time as folks have long held beliefs about rich people being good and now that is being shattered and hard to accept. Will take time. Why are people blaming foreigners? We left our front door open at night, and are shocked to see wild animals and squatters in the house in the morning. It is our fault. Own it. And do something about it.

Ultimately this exists because many people make money. Even the Boomers make money from offshoring (through their 401k) and they don't want it to stop. They have maybe another 20 years to live so they want this to continue until they are gone. No one has the long term thinking.
