Trump was in total troll mode with those comments.

My sneaky suspicion is he is trying to draw a specific reaction, comment from the ayatollah to confirm if the dude is even alive and functioning. I would expect his comments to get even a bit crazier and perhaps petty, insulting.

Probably means it kicks off in another hour or so given how quiet it's been.

The WSJ opinion peace from Condi Rice is worth a read. I posted about it earlier.

Yes, it's an excellent read and she makes some really good points.

No, Condi's WSJ piece was an opinion piece and the article you linked referenced and quoted it but not the same article. Weird it was not behind a paywall for me.

What concessions by Iran to US demands have you seen that indicate they are feeling such a choke hold? I have seen no concessions.

They can pretend that we're not destroying their country through propaganda, median statements, and tweets but that doesn't change that we have done that. Them lobbing a few missiles at neighbors is like having a temper tantrum IMO.

At some point we're going to need to hit them hard enough they'll actually give up. You can't negotiate with islamists. They are evil. They will never negotiate in good faith.

I think the biggest issue is there isn't an organized leadership of Iran to negotiate with.

Whatever happened to the limited oil storage volume issue that was going to force them to cap their wells? Seem to recall it was "only days remaining" like weeks ago. And also recall that they were dumping the oil into the ocean just to avoid the well shutdown. Any insights on any of this?

And their catastrophic water issues that would cause a relocation of Tehran. Both issues seem to have disappeared unless there is such a comms blackout that we have no idea what's happening in country.

There are several factors that could bring about a capitulation from Iran
People who wanted to believe the US could easily force a capitulation were trumpeting these considerations
boots on the ground or bombing civilian infrastructure in what some consider a war crime is usually how wars are won

Both of these options imo will not be how this conflict will be concluded
Therefore other strategies and lots of talking points about how this war would be won short of war crimes and boots on the ground

Right, but the water crisis originally came from Iran itself. So, they either overestimated the severity and/or they have received a ton of rain since beginning of year. Or, they have implemented such strict water restrictions that they've managed to prolong the collapse.

Fortune: Iran juggles oil cuts and storage strain to resist U.S. blockade
Quote:

Tehran is proactively reducing crude output in a move to stay ahead of capacity limits rather than waiting for tanks to fill completely, according to the senior official, who asked not to be identified because the information is sensitive. And engineers have learned how to idle wells without lasting damage and restart them quickly, officials say, after years of sanctions and shutdowns pushed the country's oil industry through cycles of disruption.

Great post! The oil well shutdown threat would seem to have been overstated. That would certainly help explain the current "ceasefire" standoff's ever extended deadlines.

Supposedly they were exporting some via Caspian and land routes, albeit substantially less than normal. Don't have the article link to hand, unfortunately.

Edit to add some references:

Iran Looks to the Region to Blunt the U.S. Blockade - The Soufan Center
Iran Is Using Alternative Routes To Bypass US Naval Blockade
Iranian oil exports fall to lowest level in six years, data shows | Reuters

The articles point out that May exports were less than 300K barrels per day, down from 1.9 MM prewar, and that they have 147 million barrels in floating storage. The alternative routes have bought them some time but eventually will reach a crisis as storage limits are reached. So maybe the blockade strategy works if we are patient enough.

well that is 100% wrong

the biggest issue is there is an Islamist Theocratic Dictatorship

that believes they will control the entire world because Allah told them so.
