The race will depend a lot more on how big the democrat wave ends up being in the fall, than on anything about the candidates themselves.

Republicans certainly gave the democrats an opening here by nominating a candidate with a crap ton of negatives. Talarico only wins if there is a huge shift to the Dems that lifts all the candidates. It does appear that Trump is doing everything in his power to make that happen, but a blue Texas still seems unlikely here.

The narrative has been that the Talarico camp prefers Paxton as the opponent because of his baggage...but I think Paxton is going to be more aggressive in his campaign ads than Cornyn would have been. Cornyn would have taken the traditional 'above the fray' approach and let Talarico set the narrative.

Because make no mistake, Talarico has no platform Texans can relate to. Whether it was Paxton or Cornyn, he would be running against Donald Trump.

And like it or not, Talarico has an odd personality and regardless of F16 I don't think that's going to play as well with voters as Beto potentially did.

I think they were expecting a very tight runoff where the party was bitterly divided on who to go with. Instead, Cornyn was rejected more soundly than Crockett was by Talarico in the Dem primary.

Now the real campaign begins, and Talarico won't just be able to talk in generalities about issues Texas voters care about. He'll have to take positions on real issues, because Paxton is going to push him on that. He will parrot all the corruption stuff, but Paxton is going to be more aggressive on painting Talarico as a far-left candidate than Cornyn would have.

And had it been Cornyn running, Talarico would have simply pivoted to focus on Trump's corruption instead of Paxton. I'm not buying the idea that we would have had a 'clean' campaign with Cornyn in the race.

Paxton has his issues, but I wouldn't have trusted Cornyn to safely take this race. I think he would have 'Romney'd' himself.

It does when the guy claims to be a preacher and has videos of him preaching obvious heresies. And I guarantee there's more that the GOP/Paxton has been holding onto in preparation for this campaign season.

Most swing voters are Christian, it will matter to them.

I expect some kids to come forward and say that Talarico touched them inappropriately at his " church" .
