How long do you want to ignore this user?
Currently facing a strange situation with my career. The place I work at now was fun when I started in 2018. Since then, things have gotten all thrown off due to decisions made at the top. They have created a low morale in the office by making our jobs 10x harder than it should be, allowing no room for advancement, and freezing pay.

A couple of weeks ago I called up an old friend and invited him over for a cookout at my place. He works in the same industry, but different company. He told me that night about a position, and told me to apply for it. I applied, got an interview, then today he called me to tell me they were extending me an offer. I was pretty surprised, as this is a pretty large promotion as well as salary increase.

My problem comes here: I really like what I do, and I really like my team right now. We all help each other out and do what is needed to accomplish tasks.

Have any of you ever been in a situation like this, where you like your team but everything else sucks and you needed to make a decision about moving on?

Do what is best for you and do what you can on the way out to help our your team. Perhaps down the line there will be opportunities to bring some of them over to the new company.

Have been in similar situations before (e.g. feeling guilty of leaving a team I was leading) and I do not regret leaving. It actually caused several of them to make similar moves themselves they were hesitating to do before.

Do what is best for you. That is what members of your team would do. I left teaching 2 separate times in the middle of the year (got hired back/would get hired back), but left it last year for the last time. No regrets. Everyone on my team understood. I was the 3rd of 6 teachers to leave in the middle of the year that particular year.

I didn't want to leave my colleagues in a lurch, but they completely understood.

Caring about your team is noble, but not to the detriment of yourself or your career.

Same as above…. Hard to think it sometimes but you have to look out for number 1. No one else will….

Do what's best for you - seems like new company in same industry with promotion and elevated pay is an absolute no-brainer. Especially when you take into account your first paragraph - run, don't walk to the new gig.

If you can't progress at the current place, neither can your team. You leaving will help them progress their careers and yours as well. Don't feel guilty. Stay in touch and bring them with you when the chance arrives.

Maybe you leaving will force your current employer to make changes that actually helps your current team and improves their situation??? It's a reach but who knows…

Take the new offer and run! Your team will be just fine without you. Maybe you can bring a few onboard to the new place after you get settled there. Not trying to be rude, but they will likely forget about you a month or two after you quit. Its just human nature.

I think this has been pretty well covered, but your team doesn't sign your check or pay your bills. They don't get a say in upper management decisions. And your team can change tomorrow without your say. It was a nice perk, but your team isn't the job.

Dot Is, cross Ts and be nice on the way out and say a little prayer of thanks you have the new opportunity.

I was in a similar situation. I left and it was one of the best decisions I've made. I learned a lot at the new company and was given the freedom to improve the new team. I've kept in touch with my former team as they've scattered and we have a good relationship. I'd be willing to hire most of them again, and I'm pretty sure they'd hire me if I needed a job.

After I'd been gone a number of years and the first company allowed my previous team to leave and be replaced by substandard employees, I was brought back to fix the problems. It was a painful transition, but I was able to fix the problems and build a new team since I've been given the freedom to do so. The reasons I left are still present in the company, but not in my department. As a result, we are now the shining star of the company despite being outside of the core business unit. I anticipate being tasked to serve a larger role in the near future, even if I may not want it. Regardless, I have significantly more opportunities now since I left.

So leave your current job for the new one, but keep in contact with your old coworkers. Old company can hire you back at twice the price after they figure out how much they've messed up.

Take the new job. Your team will be what you make it and it sounds like a much better company.

Going through the same right now, although I already have taken a new offer.

Liked my team (well most of them), work isn't to bad, mostly a low pay, and increased workload. While the coworkers has made it hard to leave, they are supportive because of the new opportunity.

I look at it like this: my assistant is looking for another job. I know this, and fully support her looking for a job. It would suck to lose her, but I would never want to stand in the way of her furthering her own career.

No one should fault someone for trying to better their situation.

If morale at your current company is poor and management isn't trying to make it better, it will eventually result in attrition in even the best teams. If you stayed the team may lose some of the top performers no matter the effort you put in to keep it togethe..

I'm in the exact same position now and today was Day 1 with the new company. I was working to the bone up until end of day Friday as it was difficult to get into "It's not my problem any more" mode. When I announced my leaving to my team I got a lump in my throat, other than that leaving was a no-brainer.

This was the first time I voluntarily left a position in a 25 yr career .

Without reading the other responses:

You do you, look out for yourself, and what is best for you.

Never give it a second thought - this is a no brainer.

Always remember: the company isn't looking out for you. YOU are the only one looking out for you.

You may stay because you feel loyalty to your team -- but in the end, your loyalty doesn't matter. The company can get rid of you in a heartbeat.

If you leave, your team will understand.

One of the first things I tell my staff is that it is my job to help them learn and grow. I will be their biggest cheerleader, and if another opportunity comes there way, I will help them in any way that I can. I try to build that trust with them so they can be open and honest with me. While it sucks if they leave, it would be selfish on my part to try and hold them back.

And I know it has worked as staff have come to me on more than one occasion about looking at other options, even recently. Each scenario has been just for them trying to continue to move up the ladder and/or more pay. Can't blame them for that.

Exactly. And I'm in the same boat. I'm testing the waters to find another position in this organization, and she knows. I'm open and honest about it with her, and she appreciates it. It goes both ways.

I wish more people were more open and honest with co-workers wanting to better their situations.

Got to do what's best for you and your family. Only person that knows what that is is you.

Sounds like your ready for a change if you took the interview and are considering it.

I've been there twice. Once I accepted the change. Most recently I did not accept the change but still cautiously on the hunt.

You might miss the team your on now, but the Patriots 5 years ago and the Patriots today are still the Patriots with different people.... life happens, people move on, someone's spouse gets a new job in a new city and has to move, one of your team makes a lateral / promotion move etc. Just because you stay for them wouldn't guarantee a reciprocal effect.

I was in a very similar situation when I left my last employer. I was told I was too valuable in the role I was in (accounted for a majority of sales in North America) and would not be "allowed" to apply for a director job after the previous director endorsed me for the position.

I left the comfort of a platform I knew better than most in North America, left people who had become close friends to go to a direct competitor.

It was hard for 12 months not being able to talk to friends but now my "non disclosure agreement " that barred be from contacting any employee has expired, I have reached out to some and am periodically checking in.

I don't regret making the move. Lots of management issues at the old place and there has been at least 2 rounds of layoffs since I left.
