We'll probably come in close to $18k minus the watch for a week. The plane tickets are the killer. We're already over $10k with business on the outbound flight only. I'm rolling the dice on a plus points upgrade on the way back to try and save another $5k.

Go coach or premium economy and get your watch for "free"

Did premium economy to AMS last month, and I'll never do it again on the outbound leg if I can help it. My wife didn't sleep well on the flight, and the first day there was awful.

The GS gallery is at the base of this iconic building.

It's also near the Konami building, if you played Contra on the NES when you were younger you can make the "I don't know what's in this building but I guarantee I know the code to get in" joke and make nerds laugh.

Absolutely do go to the GS Ginza store. It is a great place. However, keep in mind that walking across the street to the Mitsukoshi Department Store and registering for their "guest card" will net you another 5% off if they have the watch you want.

This conversation makes me happy I spent months in Japan on the company dime.

Only been for a ski trip, easily the best ski trip ever. Got hotel on points, flight was only 1100. So just ski and food. Made out for less than a usual US ski trip, and was there 12 days. Been dying to go back ever since

How many of you are having your watch 'serviced' ?

Tag recommends every 3-5 years to service their watches. I've had my Link Calibre 5 since 2019 and pretty much only wear it to work or at nice events. Almost never outside and never in the water.

Both services have a 24-month warranty.

M1. PARTIAL MAINTENANCE $200
The maintenance includes the following operations:
Diagnostic and dismantling of the complete watch
Ultrasonic cleaning of case & bracelet parts
Replacement of battery (quartz watches)
Water resistance renewal including gaskets
Final control as per factory specications

M2. COMPLETE SERVICE $460
The complete overhaul includes the following operations:
Diagnostic and dismantling of the complete watch
Movement overhaul or replacement, reassembling, oiling and regulation
Replacement of wearing components, consumables and battery replacement (quartz watches)
Ultrasonic cleaning of case & bracelet parts
Light bung of metal surfaces or complete refurbishing (optional)
Water-resistance renewal including gaskets
Final control as per factory specications

Haven't checked any local dealers on what they would charge.

For real.

Our household income puts us close to 1% territory and I can't imagine spending $30-$40K on a vacation. At least not until our boys are out of college.

If you're near $800K and can't afford a vacation, you're doing it wrong.

I could have a watch collection that would make Quo Vadis jealous if my wife wasn't insistent on multiple international vacations per year.

Well ****, I just looked and that top 1% number jumped a lot recently. It used to be $500K just a few years ago.

Holy crap, the 1% of households make $800k now? I thought it used to be right about $450k

Billionaires increasing their net worth even 1,000x wouldn't really impact (directly) the income required to be in the top 1% though, no?

Just thinking about distribution, the number could be moved higher by big distortions on one end.

All kidding aside, we really do have it made in the shade.

ETA the bottom one is for global top 1% net worth.

Guess I'm not following.....

It's a percentile based metric, not an average. So if all that is changing is the billionaires, or even then top 0.25%, that really wouldn't change the cut off point for the top 1%......

Yeah while the average of the top 1% could be skewed to the high side, the cut off for the 1% wouldn't change

If you are dropping $30-40K on a vacation, you probably have a considerable amount of daily spending that you could pay with credit cards. I have been "churning" credit cards for the last 10 years and have had two trips to Japan heavily subsidized with credit card points. Flights in business both ways and hotels paid for.

Honestly, we probably get close to that $30K number if you combine everything throughout the year but it would mean sacrificing all the smaller trips for one monster trip. That would also include me cutting out hunting & fishing trips.

I don't know how it is possible to spend $30K on a single trip unless you are bringing a bunch of people and paying premium everything. I do smaller trips and usually 1 or 2 bigger trips throughout the year, and I don't spend anywhere near that because of points. That usually just means that I spend too much on food, tours, and other stuff, but I am still way under.

Business class airfare is probably 50-60% of that.

Last year my brother paid for the family to go to the Amalfi coast. Including my wife and I. Private jet from Austin to Naples. Private yacht for a week. Easily $500,000. That's 1%er money, lol.

I think your number is off a bit. A nice yacht charter for a week with a substantial tip and private jet is about 20% of that number. We're y'all using stacks of cash in place of fire wood on the beach at night?

It was a legit vacation of a lifetime. The booze alone probably cost him $50k, lol.

Flying private jet international, customs comes to you on the plane and checks you into the country. Don't know why that struck me so much.
