Including Zeigenbock.
Indeed.

Karbach actually just stumbled upon Zeigenbock. It wasn't planned.

AB InBev owned Zig for a while, but sales were faltering....for obvious reasons. So, the Karbach folks just said, hey, let us give it a go. So they've been producing it lately. All-in-all, I don't expect it to last long, but in the short run, with lower overhead, the company could make a few dimes from it.

Well they've sold it at Crawford Bock for years...

Kidding, but why would they make it at the small brewery when it can be cheaply mass-produced at any of the big facilities?

We tried the Karbach pizza place a couple of weeks ago and holy hell was it hot in there. It was actually cooler to get our pizza and eat at the beer garden outside than staying in the restaurant.

I think if one made a beer that tastes like Miller Lite they would make a killing.

It really is questionable whether Crawford is Zig, but it's actually not. I asked.

It's not mass produced because it is not mass purchased. It is actually not profitable for the big guys to try and make small batches to fit the sales volume.

May have had an A/C problem?

I had one of their pizzas a couple of weeks ago after a bike ride. I think it was a meat lovers type thing. I thought it was pretty tasty. But, I was also hungry as hell from the ride and 3 beers deep on an empty stomach.

St. Arnold's Grand Prize doesn't quite taste like Miller Lite, but it's practically water and only 90 calories.

Can someone please do something with the foodarama on 18th and TCJ or knock it down. And why is it taking years to put in a gas station in the parking lot that already had a gas station?!

Not Heights, but can't see the one here on 19th far behind. I've hardly see any vehicles there the last few times I've driven by.

I wonder how many homeless have been camping out in that old Foodarama.

Didn't someone put up a fake sign saying this and everyone in the neighborhood went crazy?

Not going to lie, TJ has a form you can fill out about suggestions for locations. Shady Acres mom group passed that around and a few definitely sent in the online request.

Since we're doing brewery closings, ElderSon announced that their North location on 1960, in the old Southern Yankee spot, is closing. They also adjusted the hours at the Shepherd pub and won't be open on Sundays. Seems like an odd decision.

In other news, Urban Air just opened and has Art Car, Mini Boss, and several lighter options. You can also get a bottle of Veuve if you're feeling fancy.

Art Car & nachos were the best $11 that I've ever spent.

Announced today July 5 will be last day of Shepherd location. It was known for some time that Shepherd was on the chopping block too as they had not been brewing new beer and dabbled with seltzers to make some quick cash. I think they had planned a few months longer though.

Elder Son on Shepard was a brutal place to brew as he was only doing 3bbl batches. And i think he had 5 FV? That is a lot of very manual effort for both brewery and cellar work of cleaning/sanitizing etc... so I'm sure his burnout was very high.

And yes, its a brutal time now to be in the brewing game as appetites have dramatically swung other directions. And other economic factors are making life more expensive.

Studewood Cantine's last day is Saturday. I'm honestly shocked they lasted this long considering they opened right around COVID as I recall and the service went to **** real fast.

Yes and I think they never really found their niche other than a neighborhood brewpub.

I'm betting they shut down this quickly because they found a subletter.

I've long thought the craft brew scene in Houston was oversaturated.
For the size of our city? I don't know. I've was surprised how many breweries you find in midsized towns in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and the like. At the same time, I think consumers are on to new things.

Those 3 states easily drink more beer than Texas. Especially Wisconsin.

Elder Son took over the Southern Yankee spot to access to the better equipment. I talked to one of the staff at Southern Yankee / Elder Son and he said the SY owners tried to be picky about who they sold to. They thought Elder Son was most likely to keep it open. Too bad it didn't work out.

True. I wouldn't expect that kind of saturation here, but I figured for the size of the metro area, Houston could support what it has.

It DID support it. I think with changing tastes/fads in drink choices that breweries are no longer a top choice for a bar hang depending on who you are going out with. I'm well past my frequent bar drinking days but when we go out the wives and ladies in our group want to go somewhere that has wine and seltzers available. 10-15 years ago we just went to the brewery and the non-beer drinkers would just drink the beer because thats what was there. You combine that with the current crop of 20 somethings drinking less in general than my generation did and certain neighborhoods of houston found themselves with more breweries than what the area is willing to support. Its tough enough being a neighborhood bar in an area with lots of bars let alone a neighborhood brewery. Then you factor in that these beers are going for $8 a pint before tips and food and it suddenly looks way more appealing to just find a friend's place to hang at and drink there rather than dropping $100 for 2 people for an afternoon in a poorly air conditioned strip center

Prices definitely keep me from drinking much outside the house.

It is a generational shift. The numbers for people aged 21-30 that drink are absolutely atrocious compared to historical trends. Gen Zs are not big drinkers. They basically started turning 21 when pot started becoming legalized in many states and then the 2018 Farm Bill gave them hemp-derived THC at their fingertips.

I wouldn't call Gen Z the more sober generation as that author does. They just prefer to get ****faced off week instead of alcohol.

But also, if you look at the spirits and hard seltzer categories, they aren't too far below the next two older.
Gaeilge
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hence why I said not big drinkers and associated it with the more widespread acceptance of THC use.

I'm just amazed Walking Stick is still hanging in there.....

Guess the better setup keeps neighborhood families going. But I don't know anyone who would choose their beer over Great Heights across the street.

They have a strong weekend attendance with families walking to from the neighborhood. Anecdotally, it's one of the only breweries my wife hasn't minded because they had wine, Topo Chico, and an air-conditioned clean bathroom.
