But honestly has midtown ever been truly safe? 80's-90's it was bad and I think even with the new apartments there has always been street crime and the one off shootings

yeah, petty crime has always been pretty high.

Every friend who lived there back in the day had their vehicles broken into on the reg. Visiting them and parking on the street was always a gamble. Had a buddy held up at gunpoint while walking his dog.

Even Happy Hours at Pub meant running the gauntlet of homeless, bangers, etc. when you drove home past the bus station.

I often while driving by those apartments admire the fortitude of the young lasses in booty shorts and earbuds walking Sparky without a care in el mundo, likely unseeing the mindless troll dragging a foot and on her tail.

I'm generally pretty amazed by the people I see walking with earbuds or staring at their phones and just oblivious to the world around them. They must have significantly more faith in their fellow man - including drivers staring down at their phones - than I ever have. Always grew up being aware of surroundings.

Friday I was at MD Anderson for my second chemo treatment. My "sis" Marietta drove me and Dad.

For some reason we start two hours late, then I had a bad reaction to the first chemo drug and it took us forever to get things going again so we didn't leave the treatment center till 10:50 PM. We drove to my friends house. There wasn't any parking so Marietta had driven around the block to find a parking spot and we heard the gunshot. My friend when down to look for Marietta because it had been talking longer than it should for her to walk back. I tried calling her - no answer. So I called her husband to see if he could "find her phone" at that time I heard sirens so I headed for the elevator. My friend called crying. As dad and I were rushing out he caught his foot and fell. He told me to go ahead. I told the police I was her sister and called her husband so he was on speaker phone. We were able to give all the details to the officer about her.

We were later told that her heart stopped immediately. When he shot her in the neck. Yet both first responders and the ER gave CPR but her heart never restarted.

The man took her purse, stole my car key and took the car. I asked the police if he had taken my car key from her purse, gave them my license plate number - that's how they found him. Once they found him, there was a high speed chase and after wrecking my car he escaped on foot. They found him and barricaded at an apartment complex where he had broken into an empty (thank God) unit. The Houston SWAT talked him out after several hours.

He left two guns in my car and they have a shell casing on scene so they can match ballistics. He claims the guns are not his. I told the first officer about the car and I told him I am a gun owner but I did not have any guns in the car. I was told that he picked up a 16 yr old prostitute (who has been a prostitute since she was 13 - mg heart broke at that) who also saw him w a gun.

He has similar prior records as a juvenile for evading arrest, and stealing cars we were told. My car is very likely totaled, the police are collecting his DNA (several airbags deployed) as well as the guns then I'll be able to go down and get my personal things out of the car later this week.

So they are able to charge him with stealing the car, evading arrest, burglary for breaking into the apartment and one other thing for now while they dot the i and cross the t on the capital murder charge. He was on parole from the juvenile record offenses so he most likely will not get bail and he is also 18 years old now.
