Practice with poles. If you don't use them properly, they will potentially slow you down.
And if you don't practice with them, 2 out of 3 people using them will break them (at the same time) while on an unplanned snowy trip to the summit of a mountain.

I really want to subscribe solely for the laugh/cry emoji.

Sounds like John Kelly isn't doing very well. He said his attempt isn't dead but it's on life support. Can't move his foot. I know what that's like.
Kelly pulled the plug yesterday, in case anyone hasn't see it.

I think what Hans did could be looked back in retrospect like people are looking at Caleb and Chris Myer's races last year. I'm not saying Hans wins or even podiums next year, but he's made a long journey in a short amount of time. 18 months ago, he didn't even know what Western States was. Now he's M8 in his debut 100. Its pretty incredible, especially in light of how stacked the field was.

Turning 40 in September so I had been looking for a 40(+) mile race somewhere on this side of the world. Thought I had picked one out in Malaysia before Wife convinced me we could find somewhere a little more bucketlisty. We've been saving CC points for a few years to take a trip to Switzerland. Turns out there's a UTMB (insert obligatory boooo) race scheduled there the week of my 40th so I've signed up to run the Wildstrubel 70k!

Is badwater all road or is there a little bit of trail somewhere?

100% road.

Stoked for Hard Rock this weekend. Really looking forward to seeing what Katie Schide and Zack Miller do.

Katie has been on such a tear lately and it looks to be continuing this week. And I was just wondering if we'd see Zach again anytime soon. But I want to know, what do I have to do to run like Ludo at that age (or even now)?

Where do yall try out new trail shoes? Still looking to find an alternative to my bushida IIs. Is there a good retailer? Just Oder a few on-line and try them on?

A friend and I ran the Cody Peak 50K (WY) yesterday in the Grand Tetons, but we were pulled for not meeting one of the hard intermediate cutoffs and DNF'd.

The course was beautiful and the view from Cody Peak was fantastic, but we were in way over our heads. Elevation, vertical gain, technical terrain and even a mama moose very close by (I hid behind a tree for several minutes).

The event was well run and the volunteers were wonderful. But I felt old, slow and creaky compared to the locals (who seemed to be half my age).
Consistency: It's only a virtue if you're not a screw-up.

saw some pictures of the event/course. It looks more than legit. DNFs suck, but a day on the trails is better than sitting at home!

i haven't really changed my trail shoes in a very long time. I'll usually see if a local spot or REI has them in stock if i need to try something on. Will try and buy from wherever i try them on, if possible. But I do my best to not change shoes/brands, so I just buy online b/c i know they will typically work, barring the shoe company doing something stupid when they update the version (which has happened).

Totally agree with you. Even when we dropped we had fun. Took a couple shots of Crown at the 'top of the world' aid station, did some sightseeing and rode the tram down.

I'm staying in Jackson and Yellowstone for a couple more weeks and gonna do more trail running, but I'll never enter this race again. Even at my best, I'm no match for this course.

Next up is either Dino Valley 25K or a trip to Maryland to run a 50K with friends.

I need some new road shoes but I want a little bit of traction on them. All the ones I've gotten lately are pretty smooth on the bottom. Any recommendations?

While not a true road shoe, I picked up a pair of Hoka Challenger 8's this week. While technically a 'gravel' or 'crossover' shoe, it feels like a super cushioned daily trainer. My road shoes (Saucony Endorphin Speed, New Balance Supercomp Fuel Cell) are just too slick for the crushed rock/packed dirt trails I often run.

So far the 8's feel like a road shoe with a light trail tread.

I have the Hoka Challengers for trail. Looking for something a little less hybrid.

Makes sense. Maybe the Saucony Kinvara?

This doesn't look like any traction

Sorry, I was just kidding and suggested that as a joke. Those things literally have zero traction (great shoes though, but definitely not what you're looking for)

The addidas continental rubber has good grip reviews although it doesn't look like much. I have some Nike Vomeros actually have great traction, but wondering if there's anything else out there.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not sure what "grip" you are looking for. Just a true outsole instead of foam? you aren't really going to find lugs on a road shoe.

In my brooks and hokas, I slip on the wet sidewalks when people have their sprinklers going. My Nike vomeros do have some small lugs but they aren't the lightest shoe.

i guess i can't be of help. I've been running in brooks for 20+ years and never experienced that.

Kendall Mountain Run was awesome. I had originally signed up to do the marathon the day before, but wasn't confident in my ability to do both back to back and finish Sunday before the cutoff so I downgraded the marathon to the 8M for Saturday.

8M was a flat dirt road/double track out and back. Great scenery along the river going NW out of Silverton. It was a fun little race and I kept it chill in z2/3 in anticipation of the next days elevation.

Kendall mountain run was just a good ole slog up and down a mountain. Track was mostly FS road except for the last bit right at the peak where you had to do a light scramble to reach the high point. There were a couple runnable portions where the road flattened out slightly on the mountain, but I'd say probably 80% of the uphill portion was hiking. Downhill was quick and fun. Once I got half a mile or so down from the peak the road gets much less chunky and you can run much easier. I had a few near falls when trying to check my pace going down, but was able to stay upright. The finish there was really cool as well. You run right into the middle of town then go down the side of main street to the park at the end of town. Lots of spectators and random folks cheering you on in the last half mile.

One day post race most of the soreness is concentrated in my glutes & abductors. I did not use poles, but many folks were and I think they would have been beneficial on the climb, especially on the second half where the grade is relatively consistent above treeline.

10/10 would do again. Aravaipa put on a great event and all of the volunteers were friendly and hyped up for the weekend.

Anyone ever have this happen on relatively new (less than 2 months old) inserts. Happened to me on a fairly steep run last week but made it tough to finish run and made me realize how bad of a situation that would be if it was an important run like a race.

Congrats on an enjoyable event!!!

Yeah, I had the same experience with the Duo in 2024. Tough courses but a beautiful place with great people. I'm considering doing it again next year.

My asics superblast 2 have a great grippy outsole- they call it Asicsgrip- no slippage whatsoever
Puma has made a resurgence- I love their Magmax for a long run shoe- Just ran in their velocity nitro - both have amazing outsoles- no slip- also for lack of originality called Pumagrip

ASICS shoes never seem to work for me. I ended up getting some Adizero shoes and the rubber is pretty grippy. Sticky wi to my Nike Vomero for road to trail. I'll probably do Hennepin in those.

Anyone running the Habanero 100 in Sealy, TX on August 22-23? I'll be out there pacing a 100K runner for her last couple loops.

This is one race I have no interest in ever running.

It really is a horrible race and the 20K several years ago was enough for me (and I swore I'd never run there again).

But a friend that I've paced for at Rocky, Brazos Bend, previous Habanero's needs a pacer for the 100K so I'll be doing lite duty as a pacer.
