Yeah, I don't think people recognize the sea change here yet. There are some powerhouse schools that won't be anymore. LSU could be one of those.

Because of this I think that's why we will start seeing real movement towards player contracts and salary caps in NCAA football. It's been suggested online since NIL kicked off, but I think momentum for that is going to increase now.

Everyone is talking about this Brian Kelly payout and with all of the openings after this season it's going to be a hot topic. I even heard CNBC investment people talking about this yesterday as an example of the absurd money in the system now and how unsustainable it is.

Dan Lanning has a $20 million buyout to leave for another school. So to hire him, you'd have to pay $20 million up front to Oregon just to cancel his current Oregon contract PLUS give him a huge guaranteed new one. On top of the huge buyout having to pay to make your own previous coach go away.

Dan Lanning ain't getting hired by nobody. I know as fans all these numbers are just Monopoly money to us like watching the Federal government spend like a drunken sailor, but I assure you it is real money to the folks actually paying.

Even in the age of NIL, LSU remains a top 8 job easily.

According to Liucci during our last search, Lanning is more like $50+ mill with his Nike contract.

I said this two years back that NIL and everything attached would peak, then slide, then collapse. I think that we are peaking and will start to collapse in two years. The NCAA will collapse and college sports as we know it will die off to club level teams. We and a few others dug a hole that we can't get out of.

I agree with this other than us. I think we can get out of the hole. Currently, Elko's contract is a smart one that is incentive laden as opposed to many others that are guaranteed like BK's. (TBF, we are still paying Jimbo's guaranteed money for 6 more years which is still more than what we are paying Elko from a guaranteed standpoint. Lol dumb.)

And we are rich.

The real problem is that only a few others can compete in the no holds barred poker match that it's become. That's why it won't hold up.

Don't be surprised if LSU goes after Willie Fritz

I thought about this yesterday. Not a splash hire, but hell of a resume and coached at Tulane before going to Cougar High. Has had good success in both places, recruits well and knows how to work the portal.

I dont see Key going anywhere. Yes the job pays a lot more and is a "step up". But, he was a 4 year starter at GT. He doesnt seem like the kind of guy that is going to leave just for a larger paycheck. Maybe I am wrong.

Key makes $4.5M this year. He'd make millions more at LSU. With that kind of money differential, it doesn't matter where you played football.

He has GT in the top 10 right now, and there is a whole lot to be said for familiarity, comfort and not having the pressure that he would get at swamp tigger.

Odds are he gets a raise this year anyway, and not everybody out there is doing nothing but chasing dollars.

LOL….coaching is a job. No one forgoes millions of dollars for "familiarity, comfort, and less job pressure". Get real.

Yeah, they actually do.

Especially when you can ride out a damn good paycheck well into the millions for a long time versus likely being unemployed in 3 years if you can't immediately play in the national championship.

We're already out of the hole. We literally showed off the check on the field right before firing Jimbo.

And just like that - now it isn't.

They are barely even a thought on the landscape now. Might as well be a G5 school. It's shocking.

I don't think college sports collapse. Especially, men's basketball and football. Too much network money. Now if you're talking Tennis, Golf, etc…I agree.

LSU is a big name and a big job. To think otherwise is crazy.
it is but that doesn't always translate to being able to pluck a top coach from a rival. We have seen too many where a "top" school has a top names linked to them , but they have to settle for their 3rd or 4th choice. Happens more often than it seems - top schools usually get a bunch of raises for their targets but rarely actually pluck those guys.

See Texas who had to settle for their 7th or 8th choice in Charlie Strong.

Yup.

Now you have to be able to afford the coach over a set of years...and also the roster every year.

College football will mutate into a dozen or so Steinbrenners and then everyone else.

we keep saying / assuming this is where we land, but there are more teams actually competing for playoffs spots than there ever has been. A lot more non blue bloods.

Other half of equation to my comment...you may see some programs that were historically not great become a powerhouse because they have **** ton of money, or a benefactor that has a **** ton of money that cares alot about football.

Now that the spigot is open, there is going to be a reshuffling.

Potential example: Texas Tech

Are you sure that this isn't because we have more rounds of playoffs? Cinderellas have always been around, but I can't think of any reason that they would increase in number in any given single year.

Wonder if they are going to let Scott Woodward hire the coach? ( Jimbo-Kelly. 130 mil in buyouts. )

Can't believe i'm defending woodward, but jimbo's original contract wasn't the issue. It was the stupid extension signed by bjork.

He almost made the playoff. And wasn't his fault we didn't. It wasn't stupid . Feel free to research how we got rid of Jimbo and how the contract was modified to allow that.

Almost in a covid shortened season where he lost to Alabama 52-24 and barely beat an 0-9 Vanderbilt team. He was 100% his fault we didn't.

The raise/extension was 100% dumb as hell. If after all A&M had done for his salary, coaches salaries, facilities, etc. he was really thinking he didn't want to be at A&M, then screw him, let him go. He's already halfway out the door and you call him back and offer a ridiculous raise?

BMA's may be great at making money, but they're terrible at spending it.

Why would A&M not increase Elko's contract if he makes the playoffs? For sure they would b/c even if he wins the MNC he's still not the highest paid coach with the added incentives in SEC (IIRC).

He will get bonuses already for doing it. But we know us. If we make the playoff, we can almost count on an extension of guaranteed money that gets us right back into dumb Jimbo territory.

Football coaches have huge egos. For sure at the NCAA level. 90% feel like they can win anywhere.

Those egos won't get in the way of millions of dollars. The ones that pass typically do for special circumstances. Like family members needing special care and being in an area with top notch resources for said family members.

With that said, I'll go on record saying that I feel Coach Elko will stay. I think he gets a raise or an extension here. I think he has probably been told this already, he just cant blow the seasom away like 2024
