So who gets traded in the offseason? Paredes, Pena, or Correa? Pena to LF?
None.
They'll figure it out. My guess is they'll teach Paredes to play LF and move Jose back to 2B full time. Or Paredes becomes more of a "utility" (3B/1B/DH). Based on Walker's lack of success thus far, I don't think anyone would be opposed to getting him out of the lineup a little.
It looks to me like Paredes is the best player of those 3.
Does Houston still make this trade if the guy is not named Carlos Correa? The trade appears to be heavily slanted toward intangibles.
As long as Paredes is playing somewhere like Houston, where his swing fits, he's going to put up #s. However, he's a step behind Pena and likely Correa defensively. I don't think he has the body type to be a good 2B. Playing LF in Houston is one of the easier positions in baseball. But he has played some 1B before too.
It was a very unique position for Houston to be in. Correa wanted to come back. Minny was willing to give him back with a reasonable contract. It's 3.5 years for 71 M for his age 30, 31, 32, and 33 seasons. Fangraphs has his fWAR projections at 2.1 in '25, 3.0 in '26, 2.4 in '27, and let's just say 1.5 in '28. That's 9 WAR and 8 M per WAR and we're at 72 M. Right in line with fair market value.
If I am looking at #s alone, we're getting an avg hitter with slightly above average batted ball #s. He has a strong history (155 wRC+ last year, 125 wRC+ career). Defensively he's shown some decline, but projects well to 3B. We've seen this happen fairly regularly in baseball history.
If I am looking at things outside of his #s, the pot gets sweetened. Houston legend. October beast. Clubhouse leader.
Back to your question, does Houston trade for him if his name is Charles Connor? Maybe. Paredes left a huge hole at 3B and we needed to fix it.
