Sweep Miami

You know that isn't how this works...we are going to sweep Boston and NY and get swept by Miami.

Hey guys - something cool going on right now.

My nephew's little league all-star team is in the regional tournament for the chance to go to Williamsport. They are representing Texas East. Their little league is Lamar.

Today is their first game, and they are actually playing right now.

My nephew is currently on the mound pitching.

They are showing these games in ESPN+

Not a chance Correa is batting that low vs RHP

I hope it was because Arrighetti was working on different things last night and and not an indicator that there's an issue, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire versus the Tacoma Raniers.

Walked 4, gave up 2 monster bombs, and topped out at 90 on the gun (although lots of speed variation ranging from low 70s to 90).

Hopefully he's going to have another start or 2 at SL to sharpen up a bit.

Statcast shows he topped out at 94.0 with an average 91.5 last night. That is still quite a bit down from where he was this year - 93.7 avg.

While he probably does need another start in AAA, they need a starter to replace Gusto, so he might be learning on the fly. His next start would likely be in Miami, which is basically a rehab start.

I've mentioned this before but it's worth repeating - don't pay close attention to the stat line on rehab starts.

The only thing the player and team are worried about is the workload getting ramped up and that they feel good physically. They don't approach the starts the same way they would a typical MLB start.

Got it. I was at the game and don't recall seeing the scoreboard radar ever tick higher than 90. It looked faster than 90 but good to know their radar might be a tad off.

Understood. Was commenting more as watching in person than stat line. He didn't really seem to be fooling AAA hitters, but also didn't seem too upset so I figured it was more a result of tinkering and finding a feel for different things than him actually throwing his best stuff and getting hit.

The good news with Spencer is that his injury wasn't an arm/shoulder/elbow injury that would affect his mechanics much.

I would imagine the decrease in velo was just a result of having to build back up and ease into pitching mode.

I don't get why they paid so much for a rental #3. It makes sense why so few starters were moved with the prices teams were asking.

I think the Dbacks did alright for themselves this deadline.

New Players in their system
  • #6 Tyler Locklear 1B - MLB
  • #7 Kohl Drake LHP - AAA
  • #10 Mitch Bratt LHP - AA
  • #15 Ashton Izzi RHP - A+
  • #20 Brandyn Garcia LHP MLB
  • #23 Hunter Cranton RHP - AA
  • #25 Juan Burgos RHP - MLB
  • UR David Hagaman RHP - A
  • UR Andrew Hoffmann RHP - MLB
That is a ton of MLB-ready arms to develop and use next year.

I guess mostly because I think he's worse at LF than at 2B.

Odd move for sure

I'm guessing since they couldn't land a bat they just figured if the offense is gonna blow we need to make sure no one scores. The 2005 Astros model.

While there is nothing necessarily wrong with that approach I'm not sure it was worth it given their spot in the standings. Seems like those resources could've gone somewhere else. Almost seems like doing a deal just do a deal.

Statistically at least, you are wrong. And he has fewer opportunities to hurt us at LF than at 2B. It is going to get interesting when Yordan gets back to see where the two of them end up in the lineup. It is easier when facing lefties because you won't want Sanchez in the lineup for that, but it would seem we have one extra player for the RHP lineup unless Cam slides over and plays some CF.

They used the tax as a hard cap, so it probably made things difficult for no reason. I am so glad Crane will say F the cap for guys he wants (Greinke, Hader, Correa).

Right now, Fangraphs has four teams as locks (DET, TOR, HOU, NYY), two teams likely (BOS, SEA), Arlington at 40%, and three teams as unlikely (KCR, CLE, TBR). They're going to have to jump Boston or Seattle without letting someone like the Rays, who had a great deadline, catch them.

I still stand by what I said on the other thread. They got hot right before the deadline and decided to buy when in reality they would have been better off selling because I don't think they have a real shot at making a run.

I'd expect a little regression to the mean for Eovaldi as well. He is having one of the best seasons of his career, but it will be hard to keep that pace up.

Did we ever find out if the MN money for Correa's contract is front loaded to keep us under the cap this year? Would make a big difference in what we get from losing Framber if we can stay under the cap this season.

I looked at their expected stats. The offense should be better, while the pitching should be worse. We'll see how it plays out. They're riding deGrom and Evoaldi, who are both known for being injury-prone. Nate already missed a little time and just passed up 100 innings. I am not sure his body holds up for back-to-back years of 170ish IP. deGrom is already 120+. He hadn't broken 100 since 2019.

Getting CC back was a great move, but I think the best move may have been a non-move. Good on Dana for not giving in to those insane demands for Cease.

The best move is ending / limiting Altuve in LF.

Honest question. Why? He was the worst starting 2B in the league last year defensively. Why is there the clamoring to move him back there? Yeah he is no great shakes at LF either, but I would prefer to see Dubon at 2B and Altuve LF/DH at least until Yordan gets back. Have Sanchez in LF against RHP and let Altuve play LF against LHP.

Agreed, while Altuve is bad in LF, he is now a terrible defensive 2B and has far less defensive impact on the game in LF versus 2B, so Astros are better off with bad Altuve LF versus terrible Altuve 2B.

this will be something to keep an eye on

will removing Altuve in the 8th or 9th inning for defense become automatic for Espada?

with Urias and Dubon, he could do that every game now -- have to be careful

It doesn't matter how they pay it out; it's the average. We are definitely over. The tweet yesterday about being under was fake news.

Its always a risk if something blows up and he comes up to bat, but I think this is a great idea.

Yep

It would depend on where we are in the batting order and the situation. He needs to make sure we won't need an extra AB out of Jose.

This is going to be my side posting on this thread this weekend.

They won 8-1 and play next on Sunday. Two more wins (unless they lose Sunday) send them to Williamsport!

They are out of Richmond, which is just below Katy.
