10000 people will hold a Yordan bobble head holding a bat all while Yordan can't hold a bat.

Yeah that's some mighty fine marketing you got there boys. Mighty fine.

Two words that we are terrible at…situational hitting. We don't bunt strategically, we don't steal bases enough, we don't hit behind runners, we don't hit sac flies. We swing for the fences and pound the ball into the ground right at the shortstop when we have runners on base. We get plenty of hits and have plenty of baserunners, but we have an absolutely braindead set of hitters when it comes to what to do with runners on base ahead of them.

Also, the pitching has fallen off a cliff. Good pitching made up for a lot of the offensive issues up to this point.

I wanted an arm badly - some on here strongly disagreed and I understand because there was a big need for bats as well.

Spencer should be fine once he gets ramped back up - that's a plus.

I have no faith in Luis Garcia. He's extremely out of shape. The organization is managing their expectations here as well. Edit to add: I know before the injury the team had planned on transitioning him into a high leverage bullpen arm. They think his stuff could be elite out of the bullpen. I'm not sure if that's still the plan, but I believe it is.

Javier could turn out just fine but will need time to get ramped back up. He looked bad his last rehab start but I'm not too concerned yet. It's just going to take time - the concern isn't "if" but "when" as far as him contributing.

LMJ is LMJ. I personally think his days as a legitimate contributor are behind him.

I think you'll take anything you can get from JP France.

this is a terrible rotation for winning a division if right now it was April.

lucky for us its August and we have a small lead.

I think we could work with this in the playoff...so we just need to scratch and claw and get in.

yeah we probably shouldn't market one of our two superstars because he is hurt.

Another RHP on the mound, so we're gonna get more of Sanchez and Trammell. Maybe Caratini?

Had to share this laugh from Fantasy Baseball where I've been commissioner by default for about 15 years. We had a couple of new guys this year and one sent me an expletive-laced tirade this morning about why we had a maximum number of game started by starting pitchers that "nobody told him about."

For the record, I had no idea there was one, or maybe I just forget every October.

Anyway, the max # of starts for a team is 191, which is roughly one per every day of the season. Homeboy screenshotted me this from his page today.

Yes, that's right, he's used up 189 of the max of 191 starts. Which means he has the right to make 2 more starts over the final 55 days of the season. Hilariously, he's only tied for 3rd in wins and there's a real chance he is passed by every other team. He's first in strikeouts, but at least 7 or 8 players have a good shot to pass him there too. Good stuff.

This is one of my favorite threads on Texags, but it has sucked balls since the Dodgers series. It has nothing to do with y'all; just the results on the field.

That first half was a fun illusion to experience. Can we get it together? I'm not sure but I tend to be a pessimist.

some consolation...

for the Astros (62-50) to miss the playoffs entirely...

one among the Rangers (58-55), Guardians (56-55), and Royals (56-56) will have to surge past them

After we get swept by Miami and the Yankees that math won't look so daunting for the chasers.

one thing not comforting...

the Astros have a losing record vs. their division

16-17 vs. the AL West

very un-Astro like during the golden era

the month of September is heavy on the Angels, A's, Mariners, and Rangers

although the most recent 10 games were all against the AAAstros. If things go according to plan, it'll be different moving forward

Well when the hitters that come up in scoreable situations are Altuve, Walker, Diz, or AAA players, you are more likely to pop up, strike out, or GIDP than to do anything remotely productive. Hate lumping Altuve in there, but he makes some absolutely terrible swings way too often.

Mostly to the athletics, who have gotten extremely lucky to catch a lot of our worst pitcher starts at the same time out bats have gone cold.

Perhaps we have started to hit again, though. Now to get past being unclutch and score some base runner.

The part that is infuriating to me is that it never changes. We had one game a week or so ago where we obviously had put out the word to milk the counts. We had Dubon working 8 pitch walks and Diaz seeing 6-8 pitches per AB, and we won IIRC. And yet the next game it was right back to everybody swinging at the 1st pitch, regardless of where it was and making weak contact to the infield. With direct evidence of what works, we go out there the next game and go right back to what we have proven doesn't work.

We have younger pitchers that go out there and labor through 25-30 pitch innings, and our guys go out and get 3 outs on 7 pitches and put our guy right back on the mound. If I were an Astros pitcher, I would be getting in some guy's faces about it. First on the list would be Snitker and Cintron.

We just are braindead at the plate. Yes, I know hitting is hard and a lot of it is mental, but our guys make it way too unnecessarily hard on themselves. If a guy is throwing you nothing but outside pitches and Laz Diaz is calling them strikes, then quit looking for a pitch to pull into the Crawford boxes and hit it where it is pitched. Nobody on this team has made it to the majors without being able to put the bat to the ball. They choose to try to pull the ball and hit homers instead of sacrifice flies and hitting singles behind moving runners because the HRs pay more. It is selfish and dumb when you are trying to win as a team.

Gonna come down to Yordan. This team just doesn't have enough without him in the lineup.

Maybe if the 2 or 3 of the injured pitchers come back strong they can sneak into a playoff spot without him but I'd still expect an early exit without him in the lineup.

Equally for relief pitcher Shawn Dubin, who was stellar before his injury. Should be back very soon and an excellent 5th/6th inning reliever.

Back end could be:

Sousa
Dubin
Abreu
Hader

Why though... Just have the surgery and be ready next year

Assuming it was the Astros team surgeon, I'd rather rub a pair of Crystals against my torn hamstrings than have those guys attempt to fix it.

Will try and come back and end up have surgery in Jan screwing up next season too. This is the whole JV situation again.

Let's set the O/U on pitchers returning and performing at a level better than who they replace. The group includes Arrighetti, Dubin, France, Garcia, Javier, McCullers, and Walter.

I'll say 2.5- do you take the over or under?
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

My thoughts exactly. Whether it's the player's idea or the team's idea, it's completely stupid. So much wasted time being "hopeful". Just take your medicine and come back when you should. It's not hard to make good decisions.

ASTROS BINGO UPDATE 8-4-25
I honestly can't remember if I updated Astros Bingo today or not so I'm doing it now. Not much to update when everyone on our team sucks at the same time all weekend.

IT'S NOW OR NEVER
The Rockies' margin of error is down to zero. They have to go 51-0 to have a .500 season.

THE WORST SQUARES
Here are the worst squares to have picked that are due to ineptitude, not injury.

Yainer Diaz: 90+ RBI. He's halfway there! Just needs 45 more RBI in 50 games. 7 people picked that.

Christian Walker: Team OPS leader. If you count the new guys, he's currently 12th at .696. But he is on pace for 170 strikeouts!

Justin Verlander: 10+ wins. Going for ol' #2 tonight.

Ryan Pressly: 25+ saves. SI says the Twins are talking to him. Would be a nice way to go full circle since he started there and the Twins are pretty much done with any high-stake games this year. Nothing like having the guy you picked for a square get released mid-season. I think I had Dennis Rodman in fantasy basketball on year when some team cut him, might have been the Mavericks. It was a weird feeling.

The A's average more fans in Sacramento than they did in Oakland: I'm on the hook for this debacle. They averaged 11,386 in their lame duck finale in Oakland. This year, they're at 9,693 in Sacramento. Since COVID, the A's have averaged 8,660, 9,849, 10,276, 11,386, and 9,693. The last time they averaged digits in the thousands was 1979, a team I now want to know everything about.

I'll take the under, I only trust Arrighetti and maybe France out of that bunch, although I love LuAce and Javier.

Respect the toughness and drive to be out there helping the team.

That said, I really hope this is an educated decision and not one that will bite him in the ass.
