There can be about of an inch of dirt and the ball still be in fair territory.
I didn't see any great angle though. But seeing dirt isn't enough.
What a brutal game.
The ball was clearly foul. The ball was on the other side of the base line. There was the base line, about an inch of dirt, and the touching only dirt.
The view was from third base side. You couldn't tell from the first base angle.
Idk the rule. Is the foul line a plane upwards? Or if the ball is touching foul ground, it's foul?
The ball has to be touching the foul line to be fair. The line does not extend upward into infinity like football. Except the foul pole. That is supposed to extend to infinity as far as I know.
Pretty much all of the language in the rulebook on a ball touched by a fielder before the bases is "on or over" fair territory. It's not particularly clear, but I'm sure there's a ruling somewhere that clarifies, but not in the regular rulebook. I've seen a couple umpiring clinic videos that suggest if part of it is hanging over the line, then it's fair. This was the best still I could get, and this ball was moving back towards the line at this point.
I'd love to see an official ruling either way, because I like knowing the rules.
Mostly I'm glad it's moot and can just be a rules curiosity now.
