Need a new manager

But your GM's contract is up

Crane fired the architect GM who laid the groundwork for the last ten years

Crane fired the GM who replaced him after winning a WS

What's Crane gonna do with a GM after missing the postseason for the first time in 9 years?

Dana's had to maneuver around the Abreu and Montero deals, and to an extent, McCullers. Two are finally off the books, so this offseason will allow Dana to do a little more than he's been able to. If we weren't still paying Abreu, do we sign Walker last offseason or use the extra money to go for someone like Alonso? Those two contracts really hamstrung our ability to fill some holes last offseason, so it'll be interesting to see what Dana does with the available salary.

For all you guys who want Boone because he chews out umpires, he might manage a pitching staff worse than Joe

Unfortunately one of the things that made us great is Altuve and he can't be built around anymore. He has to be your 5th-6th best position player.

Correa is just an average ball player as well.

Yordan can't be counted on.

The other pieces are nice but we don't have a true superstar to pencil in all year.

Blow it up.

I wanted DeRo after Dusty hung them up.

I think he'd be a great fit.

I think a bunch of the coaches contracts end this year, so if that's the case, we probably just let them expire.

Well we don't have the playoffs, but we do have a month full of playoff memories, so maybe that will sustain us.

October 1, 1998.
Bill Spiers drives in Ricky Gutierrez as the Astros beat the Padres 5-4 in Games 2 of the NLDS.

A truly remarkable ending with 2 HOF closers blowing it. Billy Wagner blew the save by allowing a 9th-inning, game-tying HR to Satan Incarnate, Jim Leyritz.
After Dan Miceli let Ricky Gutierrez reach on an infield single and go to second on an Ausmus sac, they brought in Trevor Hoffman. Gutierrez - in what was the play of his career- caught Hoffman napping and stole third. He intentionally walked Biggio to set up a double play, but Spiers hit this ass of a pitch into RF for the game winner.
What I wouldn't give for 3 or 4 Billy Spiers on the current roster.
This was my third ever playoff game and first time seeing a win. You know your boss is thrilled when you skip work for both Games 1 and 2 of a daytime playoff series. But I was 24 and figured who wouldn't do the same?

What is the timing on that- end of the WS, or is there an actual date?

Updated list from ESPN of managers fired and potential candidates.
The Angels seem to have just no idea per usual

I did not realize how bad the Rangers were during the Astros run.

2017. 78
2018. 67
2019. 78
2020. 22 (60-ish pace)
2021. 60
2022. 68
2023. 90 (WS)
2024. 78
2025. 81

I hope the Astros do a rebuild instead of attempting a reload. That decade of futility above, save the obvious fluke year, must have truly sucked as a baseball fan. Please don't take the bait, Jim.

1 playoff appearance in 10 seasons… but of course the one was the title year. Them, the royals, and the nationals all fell off a cliff following the titles

If Espada is gonna get fired, what exactly are we waiting for?

Makes me think that the longer this gets drawn out, the more likely he's going to be retained.

This X100. There are many, many examples of teams that go year to year trying add expensive pieces (sometimes multiple expensive pieces) to plug holes in the chase for a championship. Rangers are a great example. Orioles use to do this. The Yankees have done this since their run in the 90s. The Astros' golden era happened because we stripped it down to the studs and started building with youth. Yes, we added pieces here and there but the foundation was the young guys - Springer, Correa, Breggy, etc. I hope we start the hard rebuild but I get the feeling we're not. I also get the feeling Espada may be back next year.

Bagwell to get back from Cabo and sober up

Once that happens he can give the official stamp of approval.

I know it drives 2015 crazy, but the shtick of Bagwell making all the decision behind the scenes is my favorite running gag on this thread.

It sucks to not be watching the Stros in the postseason but I do have some good news for everyone:

In 2017 my wife and I tied the knot - Stros won the WS
In 2022 baby #1 hit the deck - Stros won the WS
In 2024 baby #2 is due - we'll see if she can rival tjack's rally baby and bring us another one

I hope so. If it was due in 2024 and the bun hasn't come out of the oven yet, it is going to come out burnt...

Chapman allowing the runner at second to see his grip and relay it to the hitter isn't cheating.....

Plunking Judge and Stanton for relaying to the hitter isn't cheating either.

No it's not. But the post clearly said Yankees cheating. Which that wasn't cheating.

Regardless, unless the game is out of hand free bases in a 3 game series is probably unwise either way.

It doesn't work if you don't draft well. Much, much more rare to get 3 or 4 young draft hits that do what the Astros did.

Sure, sell off some pieces, but you can still win without stripping it all the way down.

Dana is going to have to have his recent draft picks start hitting.

You have to have the right GM to do it as well. I'm
Not sold Dana could do it.

On the other hand, Cora probably don't have a lot of room to call out others.

So you're confirming that Bagwell has already put Ausmus's name on Espada's office door?
