Does anyone know the back story of why Vic Schaefer wasn't hired as our WBB coach after Gary Blair retired? Vic is an A&M graduate, his kids grew up in College Station, and he's a defensive wizard. Just wondering why we didn't land him as our WBB head coach.

We had our chance. Look to the previous admin for the answer. Blame Blair or make it seem that way but Blair wasn't the AD.
Not really, tu poached Vic in '20 from Miss State & Blair retired in '22. Had Gary retired 2 yrs earlier we most probably would have hired Vic. Gary was approx. 75 in '20!
I'd guess Vic is a freaking do*che for not waiting a year to go to his Alma Mater. Little guy lost Chavez today so that made me laugh, as he buys out-of-state recruits.

Yep, she announced for OU. I was hoping she'd stay home at Tech and thought they'd spend the money to keep her, even though I think she wanted the bigger stage of the SEC. Guess not.
I saw her play a couple of times over the last couple of years. She can really go. Seems like a solid kid, too.

Better OU than SC given how loaded they always are. I imagine Chavez thought the same.

Gary stayed too long and buried the program. Generally, I love the guy, but he took us to the pinnacle then absolutely buried us. There's no reason in this world that Vic should not have been our Coach, except Gary wouldn't retire, and look at our last 2 years. Terrible, This is where the AD needed to step in, but we didn't have an AD in 2000. The entire situation is a train wreck.

Texas basketball program is a better program. He wasn't leaving there after 2 years. He knew he was walking away from a very good situation to a disaster. Not saying it wasn't fixable with the portal, but that roster was bad when Blair left.

I've said it before and I don't necessarily know this to be 100% true but I feel if the administration would have allowed Vic to be the next in line to be the head coach after Blair, he would have stepped down sooner than he did. But since they wanted him to get head coaching experience elsewhere, he stuck around a little longer. People act like the teams were terrible even then but they were still making the tournament and contending.
The worst year was his last season and that's because it's hard to recruit when you know the coach is leaving at the end of the year and there was no plan in place for his replacement. I don't blame Coach Blair for this. This is all on the administration in place at the time in my opinion.

So if we named Vic HCIW when does Blair retire? Also why didn't Blair retire when Vic was offered by sips?
Blair did not owe it to anyone to step down just because darling Vic wanted the job

as an aggie, how can you watch what vic schaefer is doing at texas and not feel absolutely gutted that he’s not coaching at texas a&m? his alma mater. insane fumble imo.

I'm totally over it.
I don't know that I ever will be. To think we had a quality, alum coach and didn't give him a chance to continue something that had been pretty good. As I said more than once at the time, Blair should have been eased out and Vic made HC designate.

The sport loses money even as a national champion. I don't see any donor stepping up to pay what it would take
The same could be said for almost every sport at Texas A$M (outside of football). The right coach can change the trajectory.

Still waiting on a donor who cares enough. And I really don't think we're going to pay big 3 sport money for women's basketball - which is what it would take to get Staley or someone close.
