I moved my deductibles to 2% wind and hail. As many of you have indicated, the deductible game is simply choosing to self insure a portion of the next roof claim. In a great portion of Texas, the likelihood of having a significant hail storm damage your roof is quite high (every 5-6 years +/-). I think the sweet spot right now is at the 2% wind/hail, even though it's not as sweet as it used to be. On the commercial side, insurance companies are hammering my clients. At some point it may simply come down to actually self-insuring a potential roof claim as some of you on here have already effectively decided. On another note, I wonder how this is eventually going to effect Roofing Contractors. It can't be good news knowing that most homeowner's going forward will need to pay a significant portion of a new roof.

BCS has been a hotspot over the past 7 years. Even so, it depends on where exactly you are in the BCS. It 'as a whole' has been hit with notable hail in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2025 with a minor event or two in between.

I started working in BCS in 2018. We did a ton of houses over the area since then. But, it really depended where you were. There were a lot of pockets where damage was extensive, with other areas being barely touched, even if the map shows otherwise.

The big spots in the state were BCS, SA and surrounding areas, Austin and surrounding areas, and Dallas. There were some other spots that got massive hail but you don't hear about them because they are rural.

Here is the hail overlay for BCS. Kinda crazy.

That said, you can go years before a storm. There just isn't a way to know which is why insurance is a thing.
