AC unit is old and might be on its last leg. Not working again. Any trustworthy companies out there?

Seven years ago I used Climate Express out of New Braunfels. I was pretty happy with them. I have them doing annuals on my system right now.

Wilks is who we use and the owner or at least one of them is also an Aggie. Have had different technicians come out and they are all top notch. Great service.

Just curious who you used and how much it ran you. Our rent house a/c went out this evening and I'm guessing we need a new unit.

Bumping for any further recommendations and to ask a few questions. Saw a lot of people recommending Rosenberg on Nextdoor so I had them out today. May have Wilks out too though after reading this thread.

They are saying we have issues with the board in our furnace (not always sending the signal to kick on the blower to move the warm air). No issues with the A/C so far. Part would be ~$1,200-1,400, but the system is older. They recommend to at least do a full furnace replacement at ~$5,400 due to the age of the system.

Also got quoted for full system replacement including outside unit. I'm always leery when people start adding more to a job, but our system is 17-18 years old. Should we just focus on replacing what isn't working or just pony up the money and and deal with everything at once?

REFERENCE INFO

• House is ~2,000 sqft. Haven't had any other issues really with hvac in the 2 years we've owned it.
• Outside AC Unit: Trane XR13 3.5-ton from 2008 (17 years old)
• Furnace: Trane/American Standard (not sure which type) from 2006 (19 years old)

Also, the quote they provided included Lennox units, but it seems like online preferences leaned more toward Rheem/Ruud or Trane/American Standard. Can ask them to update with different equipment depending on what recommendations y'all may have.

just used climate express. Likely pricey, i didnt take the time to shop, but customer service was outstanding. Did whole AC replacement- cost $14K

I converted to using Wilks a couple years ago. Highly recommend. They did repair work for me at first and I was impressed then I had them out tfor a major project a few months ago. Very happy and I just call them now becasue I know it gets done right and if there is an issue that pops up after they will make sure it gets taken care of. Very happy with their experience and service.

Another bump about Wilks Air after they came out today for another issue. Outside A/C unit stopped kicking on yesterday. No breaker issues (flipped them anyway). Turned system off for a bit and then back on later (no change). Turned it on this morning, and it ran again...

Still had them out anyway to look things over since the weather is heating up. Diagnosis: ants in the electrical. Had no idea this is fairly common. Not many in it, but there can be enough dead bodies to affect the connections. Cleaned it out and that was it (no charge). Did mention a few aging components as an FYI for what may actually fail first.

I was already planning to do some pesticide treatments this week, but I'll be giving extra attention to the area around the A/C unit from now on.

Ants were a constant problem with the AC at my old office. I would spray and not see any and those jerks would still cause problems. Got to be diligent and keep any trees or plants that they like away

What about in the NB area? I've tried several over the years and have had good luck with Tri County but my mom had problems with them on an install that worries me. I've got a VERY old system and am just trying to plan ahead in case I need a new system this summer
