We live in San Antonio and our son had both the flu and pneumonia causing him to miss 26 days of school. They were excused absences and he kept up his school work. He's been in a charter school but we are moving him to SA Academy, an all boys school starting next year. As with most private schools, part of their enrollment/acceptance is testing. He scored in the top 3% nationally. He receives 100s on 99 percent of his work. He plays golf, soccer and is in martial arts.
Today he wasn't feeling well and asked his teacher if he could go to the nurse. She said "no, you've missed too much school." Mind you, this was after 12 pm and he would not be counted absent as long as he is in school until 10:30 am. When he came today he was running a 102.2 temp. The school policy is if your child has a 100.4 or higher they aren't supposed to come to school the next day. But if his normal tomorrow we will send him to school.
Should I be concerned that the state could mandate that he repeats 1st grade?

Up to 3rd grade it's parent choice to repeat grades for Texas public schools. https://tea.texas.gov/texas-schools/health-safety-discipline/covid/restart-grade#:~:text=The%20Texas%20Legislature%20has%20given,to%20make%20as%20a%20parent.

Also if you're to private school next year, I really wouldn't worry about it. Just have a documentation of him being sick and I'm sure the private school will happily take your son and his tuition.

Thanks for the info/response. And we've learned in the last couple of hours you're right. He's already been accepted and they've cashed our check.

Yeah, 26. We're pretty sure he caught pnuemonia at school, went back to school after that ordeal and a few days later caught the flu at school. His doctor said he was seeing a lot of it and when you combine a young body just healing from one ailment and they get hit with another it amplifies the sickness.
Four of his classmates are currently out with whatever my son has. He's running a high fever but motrin brings it down. He scored 4 goals on Saturday.

Well that sounds pretty rich. My 1st three were private school in Memphis and didn't see any of that!

Half the girls from my daughter's class are at boarding school in Europe the rest at TMI or St Marys for high school

Hell TMI has a former NBA coach as the basketball coach

There is a more money in SA than you thin

For 25k a year you better fill him full of Airborne and Vapo-Rub so he doesn't miss 10k worth of school next year!

I'd be pissed about this. I'd email or show up at school and let her know that your child came home with a high temperature, that she violated school policy, and put other students at risk by keeping your sick child in school. This all could have been avoided with a trip to the school nurse.

I'd make sure the nurse, counselor, and principal know as well.

My introduction to chronic migraines came in 7th grade. I remember telling my teacher and she told me just to put my head on my desk. I got home alone after school, and pretty much passed out on the bathroom floor, incapacitated. My mom found me and was pissed.
