If you grew up when playgrounds were made of solid steel and were built on a mix of grass and concrete....this is for you!

That plinker grid of steel haunts me. I hit my chin and bit through my tongue - 4 years old. I just can't.

My elementary school had two playgrounds. One brand new one with a plastic slide, but the other one was still the burning metal slide. We also had the metal balance beams and pull-up bars that everyone learned to do flips on.

Instead of the plinko tower we had the hexagon version. And if anyone else was from Amarillo, do they remember climbing on the wooden pirate ship or climbing up inside tower at the park by southwest and bell?

The park my grand parents took us to had a metal firetruck for climbing and this metal half circle see-saw like thing that they ended up having to chain down after too many kids flipped it.

Yep we had a wooden pirate ship in midland, and I got giant splinters in my hand every time I climbed it. I also had several leg burns from the metal slide of doom.

We had the metal slide that was 200 degrees, monkey bars and parallel bars like a dip bar height that we would have races on

You would swing legs over one side, run to other side and repeat until one person tagged the other.

That usually happened when someone banged the **** out of their knee and stopped.

Day 194
If you are old enough to remember these...

My mom made us do stamp duty. We had to take rows of these and fill up the books so we could get something from the stamp gift catalog.

True Story:
One time I got the bright idea to take a whole page of stamps and use a sponge to activate the glue and do a full page at a time, so I could go outside and play. Well the glue doesn't stick as well when you do too many stamps at a time, so a couple of pages of stamps ended up falling out. Needless to say my mother was none too happy with my so called "short cut method" of stamping.
When they moved a couple of years ago I found some old S&H Stamp books still in their antique icebox where we kept them. Those were the days. And I know my mom will read this later....I LOVE YOU MOM, AND STILL SORRY ABOUT THOSE LOST STAMPS.

I recall the mid-1970s, when my Dad got a Citizens Band (CB) radio to use while we were driving in our family car. We mostly drove across Texas to visit family and used the CB to avoid getting speeding citations from law enforcement, which on the CB was known as "a Smokey the Bear handing out Green Stamps."

After the National Maximum Speed Limit was lowered to 55 by the U.S. Congress in 1974 in response to the 1973 Oil Crisis, the CB radio alert and warning of "double nickel time" meant there was a car with "bubble gum machines" (360-degree rotating strobe lights atop a police car) in the area "handing out Green Stamps," so you had better slow down to avoid being pulled over and issued a speeding citation.

Similarly, I have taught my 12th-grade U.S. government students and my college-sophomore U.S. government students about U.S. Congress lawmaking and the U.S. Constitution Preamble using the "School House Rock" videos "I'm Just A Bill" and "Preamble." My high school and college students love learning in this manner.

Ever since the mid-1970s, when I was watching "School House Rock" in between Saturday cartoons, I learned about U.S. lawmaking, the words of the U.S. Constitution Preamble, and all kinds of other facts about U.S. history and English grammar.

"I'm Just A Bill"

I'm just a bill.
Yes, I'm only a bill.
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city.
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law someday
At least I hope and pray that I will,
But today I am still just a bill.

"Preamble"

In 1787 I'm told
Our founding fathers did agree
To write a list of principles
For keepin' people free.
The U.S.A. was just startin' out.
A whole brand-new country.
And so our people spelled it out
The things that we should be.

And they put those principles down on paper and called it the Constitution, and it's been helping us run our country ever since then. The first part of the Constitution is called the preamble and tells what those founding fathers set out to do.

We the people,
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The preamble is forever burned into my head because of school house rock. It lives in there with:

"Its a great big universe and we're all really puny,
Just tiny little specks, the size of mickey Rooney."

And

"United States, Canada, Mexico, Panama
Haiti, Jamaica, Peru
Republic Dominican, Cuba, Caribbean
Greenland, El Salvador too."

OK, I am pulling out the big guns...
What time is it kids....It's Bozo the Clown Time! I was convinced I would one day get to be on the Grand Prize Game and win a birthday cake from Rosers Bakery, a crisp 50 dollar bill, and a new bike. Who else had Bozo delusions of grandeur?
