just finished up the game. Low stress game. some quick takes

  • Stowers is the real deal. Plays with so much confidence in every aspect of her game. Hitting and serving well. She's a maniac on defense too. Wonder when we'll start working her into some backrow attacks.
  • Applegate made some really nice digs. One was out of the back corner perfectly to the setter.
  • Anyone feel like the setting tempo is quite a bit faster this year, especially to the middles.
  • Middles swinging to terminate every single time.
  • Felt like defense was better but still some what looked like easy passes didn't make it to target
  • Serving harder this year all around but still too many errors to my liking
  • Lednicky did fine the first set but seemed to lose rhythm as the game progressed. Glad she got the final kill of the game. She made more errors tonight than vs Pitt it seems. She would have easily gotten to double digits but maybe mentally tried too hard after a certain point.
  • Surprised Rice played so poorly for a team voted to be top team in conference

Obviously Rice was outmatched... was interesting to see though- on quick scores Ags were dominant. On prolonged rally's I'd bet they were 50/50. Would have thought Ags would have outperformed in those situations too. Stamina issue?

There have been times the last couple of years that I felt like 90% of the long rallies went to the opponent.

It seemed like against rice for most of the long rallies, we were out of system a lot and just scrambling to make plays while Rice was in system. In contrast, when we were in system, we generally killed rice pretty quick.

So I wasn't alone in this

I'm a fairly new volleyball guy, have a daughter that's falling in love with the game. Have done season tix at Rice the last few years, feel like we kind of "know" the team, but the games we're able to make are not usually against elites like the Ags. I do think Rice does very well with the talent they can recruit, after all you have to be a nerd and a sportster to play there

One question I had was about the number of net balls on both sides. I'm guessing they're trying to skim, barely clear the net, but if they side out 20% of the time, is the benefit of the 80% that make it over that much more valuable? I'm hoping there are some analytics to support the strategy, but it's hard to observe an advantage gained.
