SMU takes the first set 25-23

Starting off bad in both sets

Fought back to 24-24 after multiple SMU set points, only to give up the next two to SMU.

We did have 2 or 3 of Stowers, Applegate, and Fitch in for a lot of that set.

Going to 4 sets vs SMU today, so 2 more to go.

Does anyone know the reason why teams run with no DS? Offensively, you don't really need two backrow hitters and they tend to not be that good at defense, compared to a true DS.

I went to both matches. Morgan and Kirra did not dress out for either, just like the scrimmage. Tatum dressed but never played. The Aggie blocking was really smothering in the TCU match. SMU brought a lot more power with their outside hitters and the Ags struggled to contain them. Still the second and third sets were very competitive (Ags really should have won the third). The Ags and the Ponies played primarily their backups and freshmen in the fourth set of that match and the Aggies made an impressive comeback to take it.

Player comments:
I was much more impressed with Taryn's play today than I was in the Wednesday scrimmage. She had some good kills and helped on blocks.
Molly Brown got a lot of floor time and was blocking and making a lot of kills in both matches. Probably the best I've seen her play.
TCU did a good job of blocking Kyndal, but she had some good kills across the two matches.
Lexi Guinn got a little more time at MB again today.

Appreciate the insight, hope Morgan and Kirra are healthy

Jamie's comment last year was that we were running with 2 L/DS in the back row because they were good.

Year before we ran a 6-2 where the setter was always in the back row.

Now, think about the value of Logan in the game even if she is in the back row, and but having 2 L/DS and a setting in the back row. Last year we ran a 5-1 with 2 L/DS and Logan rotating in the back while the setter was in the front.

I think it really comes down to your best combination.

Hopefully we can continue to work on our serving before the fall

2 liberos allowed began last year for NCAA. Morrison never used it but rather a DS for an OH

Interesting to see what he will do this season. If you use two liberos only one is allowed to serve in a given set so if both liberos are better than the OH at serving and can play a better middle back then i can see use of one of them just as DS or Tatem when healthy

If say Ava is better at defense and Applegate at serve receive I can see a platoon of them depending on who has the serve.

No stats for the matches so no idea how they did


Molly Brown has no more eligibility unless a waiver is granted just helping during spring while Perkins is out

Neither Ava or Addi stood out as a better server to me. Although, my judging of serving is pretty much net or out is bad, in and played is good, ace is extra good. Also, I didn't keep stats, so all based on my feelings/impressions and that usually boils down to if I'm anticipating a service error every time a player is serving, then that is bad. If not, then the player is good. Overall, the number of players I was anticipating a service error (1, maybe 2) was lower than last year.

I did notice some interesting substitutions where player B would sub in for Player A and immediately swap with the Libero. I assume that relates to some Libero substitution rule that I don't fully understand.

Feels strange to not do a home-and-home series though I get we get to play every team in the conference.

Conference schedule. I haven't seen the finalized non-conf schedule yet. But hopefully the non-conf schedule can be finalized quickly now that the conference schedule is out.

12thman.com has the conference schedule listed, but only the AVCA first serve game for non-conference so far.

I think we play our tourney at home Sept 18-20 not for sure however. Only one other match non con at home and that is the official first date of the season I think although we play Minn early in second serve series

Baylor and Rice today, both at Baylor. Hope to get some updates from somewhere!
