Day 4 Preview - It's the Ladies Turn to Show Up and Show Out
What a day it was yesterday! Our men showed up and showed out! 10 athletes and 2 relays, with 1 qualifying in two individual events tallies up to 13 entries at the national meet for our group. A great day of work was had, but today it's all about the women! It's all women competing today on the final day of the NCAA Track and Field Preliminaries for the West Region. Make sure you get out to EB Cushing and help bring these girls to the finish line!
Our men positioned themselves to be in contention at nationals, now it's time for our women to do the same. Although we don't have as much depth as others, we have a great group of girls that could contend for a podium finish at nationals. The other favorites are Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Oregon. We have one ticket punched so far and that's Sofia Iakushina who had already qualified in the Women's Heptathlon! We didn't qualify anyone on day 1, but let's hope many girls get to punch their tickets today!
Sofia is amazing and we can expect some points off the track from Winny Bii, one of the nation's best triple jumpers. Abigail Martin did score last year in the discus, but hasn't hit that mark again (something that's happened with all our throwers this year). Solis she has potential, I think qualifying today can bring her confidence back. Victoria Kadiri can make some noise in the triple jump when she's at her best! On the track we don't have many heavy hitters, but we have a few in Jasmine Montgomery and Camryn Dickson in the 100/200, and Jaiya Covington in the 100 hurdles. Those are our only 3 projected to advance in the sprints. We also have a strong steeplechase group. Debora Cherono and Kennady Fontenot could make noise. Lastly both of our relays should advance as well. As the second biggest pop star in the world once said "who runs the world… girls" it's time for our ladies to show what they got on the track!
Women's Discus - 1:00
The day begins at 1 o clock with the women's discus, although Abigail Martin probably won't throw till closer to 3 due to her being in the final flight! Like I mentioned earlier, Martin had a huge national meet last season placing 4th for our team. This seasons she's ranked 15th in the nation and 8th in the west region. But like I mentioned with Sanders yesterday, throwing in the NCAA has exploded, but Martin as well hasn't hit her best mark from last season. She's 5 feet away from it. She also had a rough meet at conference where she had a bunch of fouls, not sure if they were intentional fouls due to being not satisfied with the throw or actual fouls. We have to hope she's at her best, when she is she can easily qualify and even score at nationals. Let's hope she's saving her best for this championship season. The east side is a lot stronger.
Women's Triple Jump - 2:30
A big event for the Aggies here as have two athletes ranked in the top 12 of the region. Now this event is loaded on the west side with 8 of the NCAA's top ten marks. For instance Victoria Kadiri is ranked 11th in this region and 14th in the ncaa lol. So the competition will be stiff. Winny Bii is tied for first in the nation with OU's Agur Dwol. Bii is really consistent and should easily qualify, Kadiri has been on a tear as of late but if capable of advancing even though her results are a little less inconsistent. A great day would be both of these advancing. For the jumps, they have tow runways going at once, so while it starts at 2:30, they'll probably being around 3:15.
Women's High Jump - 3:30
Long gone are the days where we knew we'd score here with Lamara Distin. We didn't go after any transfer targets in this event, but we signed Milena Chevallier out of high school. Although she started her year off a little slow this freshman season, she's been jumping more consistent as of late. She's been stuck at the 5'10 mark hitting 5'10 three different times but never 5'11. The third height today will be 5'11.25 so today would be the perfect day to eclipse that bar. At 5'10 she's ranked 34th in the region. So it might take 5'11 with no misses or 6'0 to even make it.
Women's 4x100 - 5:00
Same start time as yesterday and with the same event. Our men hit a huge season's best in this race yesterday by nearly .3 seconds. Our women are a lot stronger in this event. They are 6th in the nation in this event, however they're 5th in the region. So although it's a tough regional event, they should still easily qualify. If you're tired of USC and their sprinting prowess, their women's relay is incredibly fast and ahead of the field. We got a good one draw as we'll be in lane 5. Only Baylor has a faster time and they'll be in lane 8, they're ranked 2nd in the nation. As long as we have clean handoffs and get the baton around, we'll smoothly advance. This relay could score at the national meet!
Women's 3000 Steeplechase - 5:40
Like with most distance events at a qualifying meet, you want to be in the later hears to see what the bubble time is. You can argue either way saying you want to know the bubble time or that by running first you're not hyper focused on a specific time and can run your race. All that is moot because the computer threw all 3 of our steeplechasers in heat 1! How ironic! Debora Cherono, Kennady Fontenot, and Emma Little make up a strong Aggie trio! In the region they're ranked 10th, 15th and 34th. Top 3 in each of the 3 heats will automatically advance as well as the next 3 best times. In heat 1 Cherono is ranked 4th and Fontenot 5th. The top two runners are ranked 8th and 9th in the ncaa. The fight for that 3rd spot will be close! We'll see if they take it out fast or not. Cherono has 1500 speed and Fontenot has more 5k strength. They'll need to stay up top the entire way. This is Cherono's first year in the event. Last season Fontenot had a great shot of advancing to nationals but clipped one of the barriers in this meet. I'm sure she's on a redemption tour today. If they stay together and up top they'll put themselves in a great spot. Yesterday Victor Kibiego had the 4th best time in his heat and two ahead of him failed to qualify! Racing is all that matters, not times in a meet like this! It's gonna be a tight battle that comes down to seconds, but believe!
Women's 100 Hurdles - 6:15
We have two Aggies in this event including the Indoor 60 Hurdle Champion in Jaiya Covington. She'll be in a pretty tough heat with the 2nd and 7th fastest hurdlers in the ncaa, Covington is ranked 4th. They are the fastest in the region and all got thrown together in the same heat. But Covington should easily get top 3 and in a meet that mattered I'm sure she'd easily win it also. But she should easily go through! We don't talk about it enough, but her improvement year after year is insane. She must be such a hard worker! In heat 1 will be Jasmine Harmon. Don't sleep on her, she came into the regional ranked 18th, but she looked great on Thursday. We'll see what happens today but I think she'll have a shot at advancing. She has a pretty solid heat so she needs to at minimum be 5th or better!
Women's 100 - 6:35
These short sprints are vital to our women's success. The 100/200 sprinting duo of Camryn Dickson and Jasmine Montgomery are a formidable duo that are the corner pieces for our team. Their versatility and strength make this team. They'll be running in both relays and both sprints. After a family East qualifying in the 4x100, an hour and a half later they'll contest the 100. Montgomery will be in heat 1, which I think is a totally unfair draw with 4 of the top ten runners in the country and 1 ranked behind them all who has a 12.89 PB and has only raced 2 collegiate 100's in Shawnti Jackson. Although it'll be tall task for Montgomery, this is where you show you belong and that she absolutely does. I expect most of the time qualifiers to come out of this heat regardless. I'm the next heat Camryn Dickson has a much better draw. Although with two other top ten athletes, after them and Dickson it's a big drop. So I expect Camryn to move through easily!
Women's 400 - 6:50
This group finally saw a PB on Thursday with Jaydan Wood running a great time of 51.47. Kennedy Wade got through with a 52.49. It's gonna take a time closer to 51 to advance through! Wood needs to run like she did last race and Kennedy needs a big Pr. Latasha Smith came in ranked in the top 12 but didn't look herself in the first round and was far from qualifying. Wood is our best chance today. They'll both be in heat 1 lanes 3 and 4.
Women's 200 - 7:50
Nearly two hours after the 4x100 relay, and an hour and 15 minutes after the 100, Montgomery and Dickson will line up once more for the 200. An event I believe is their strongest, especially Montgomery where she's ranked 2nd and Dickson 5th. I think the roles flip here. While Montgomery had the crazy 100 heat, here she has a much more manageable heat that she can win jogging the last 50. Dickson has the tougher time in the 200, with 3 other athletes near her PB. Although I believe in both sprints they'll both make it through regardless of who's lined up next to them, it's just an interesting tidbit to pay attention to.
Women's 5000 - 8:10
By the skin of her teeth, Megan Roberts is set to compete in her second race of the meet after placing 22nd in the 10000 on Thursday night. Her night will consists of 12 and half less laps. She squeaks in ranked 48th in an unbelievable 5k field. Cherono and Fontenot both could have qualified, but are focusing on the steeple. Roberts is only a redshirt freshman but she doesn't race like it at all. Most underclassmen in distance races are afraid to run hard and put themselves out there early on. Roberts shows in conference that she can hang with the big dawgs! I'm excited to see how she does and this race will only be a stepping stone to her successful next 3 seasons!
Women's 4x400 - 8:45
If you're tired of seeing the name Dickson and Montgomery, well that's too damn bad! They'll both be back for their 4th race of the evening and 6th in 2 days. With our lack of 400 quality, Dickson and Montgomery are tasked with racing this relay as well. Although it's a lot of racing, and even if we had some stronger 400 runners they may still be the most capable on this relay as well. We'll see how much energy they have left in them. It's really surprising to see Pat Henry not have a strong 400 group on the women's side. Latasha Smith and Jaydan Wood would normally be the other legs, hopefully Smith could redeem herself. Wade and Tyler Lowe would be the alternates. The heat however should be fairly easy as they have the best time coming in of the heat with UCLA right behind them. I'd personally have Montgomery and Dickson 3rd and 4th to gauge where we stand and to potentially ease it back and not take unnecessary bold moves in case their legs are tired. But I think even if we ran Wade and Lowe we'd still qualify.
But like I mentioned yesterday. This sport is a fun and highly entertaining and competitive!! If you have no plans for Saturday night, head on over to EB Cushing Stadium! I'll be here providing insight and updates and telling which athletes to pack their bags for Oregon! Go cheer on our Aggies and bring them on home to the finish line, they need it and they are thankful for it!! BTHO THE WEST!
