I kept reading on FB to 'bring the tissues' to this movie.. I kept thinking, sure I want to see gaga naked just as much as the next guy, but I think I'll wait until I can watch it in the privacy of my own home!!

But now reading your comment, that makes more sense.

I'm a man, and I was making audible noises as I cried. If public crying embarrasses you then you might wanna wait until it comes out on LaserDisc. But rest assured you won't be the only one in the theater with dust in your eyes.

Saw it last night. I thought it was ok, but frankly didn't like it as much as some others do. I certainly didn't shed a tear at any point. Perhaps because I knew the whole storyline before I even went. (I've seen 2 of the other versions - so kinda hard not to anticipate the ending given the reference. Even more so after the dick manager's speech.) I think GaGa was best when singing anything but the pop stuff with dancers. While I think she did a good job, I really wasn't as impressed with her as I was Cooper and Elliott and I think they knocked it out of the park. I also thought Cooper did a nice job of directing.

I have not seen this movie, but I am a big Bradley Cooper fan, mainly because I saw the movie below. It's one of my favorite movies, and if you haven't seen it, I would suggest that you should. The cast is awesome, the story is unique, and the acting is great.

Also, I was not a big Lady Gaga fan, and I'm still not, but this song is by far her best, IMO. The video is strange, but the song, to me, is easily her most enduring.

Looking forward to seeing the movie.

We saw it again last night - still amazing. Like most second viewings, I caught a lot of the nuance within the story that answers some of the questions that might stand out on the first showing when everything is coming at you. I thought the acting was superb on the first viewing but the second time around, some of it really stood out.

A specific example was how Cooper was absolutely brilliant in portraying the subtle differences between an addict when they're on a sober streak and when they're even slightly off the wagon. It hit close to home with my wife and I, who have had close family deal with that same struggle - you can hear it in their voice without even being in person when they're trying to have it together but they're under the influence. Cooper nailed that aspect, in our opinion.

I also concluded that the drag bar was in LA, which is where his house is. He was on his way from a show to the airport for his next gig, which would explain why he knew the driver well, why he would be known at the cop bar for "coming in here," why Ally's father's friends were around for the Grammys, and why he would just "meet here there" for her last concert, which was also in LA.

Also, the timeline is shown to accelerate through the montages of his tour after they sing together for the first time. Her success as a solo artist seems to happen in a shorter period of time, since it goes from recording her single, to Memphis, to the Grammys before accelerating a few months again when he's in rehab. His return and suicide seem to happen in short order, though.

Still the best movie I've seen this year with a soundtrack I can't get out of my head or off my playlist. A great movie-going experience in a theater with great sound!

Saw this tonight. Thought it was great from the start. Lady Gaga can sing her ass off. Gotta be the most talented female artist of our generation, right. However, the ending wrecked the entire movie for me. Up until the suicide I loved Cooper's character, but for some reason that just really pissed me off. I know suicide is extremely sad and the unfortunate final desperate act of someone with a serious mental health issue, but I just can't get over feeling that it's an extremely selfish act. Would have been much more emotional ending for me if Cooper had started drinking again after the manager guy gave him **** and GaGa lied to him, but then tried to drive drunk to the concert because he promised her he would be there and crashed his motorcycle on the way. Maybe it's just me. Wish it would have ended differently.

A movie hasn't hit me like this since Manchester by the Sea.

Never been a Lady Gaga fan, and don't plan to start listening to her pop stuff, but holy **** what a voice. So powerful and beautiful.

Very impressed by Bradley Cooper's direction and acting. I noticed the group meeting leader was one of his cast mates from Alias. He was already A-list, but I think this movie will propel him even higher.

Sam Elliott's character resonated with me due to some current family issues.

Major Spoilers: As someone who has dealt personally with depression and suicidal thinking and has survived one attempt, this movie hit me hard. This movie, more than any other I've ever seen, nearly exactly explains how I felt that night. That belief that you are holding someone back, that they could never be truly happy by your side, and that they would be better off without you... even if it's not true, but in your head it's a 100% fact. You just feel like you'd be doing everyone a favor by relieving them of the burden of you. Very, very difficult for me to watch, and I nearly walked out after Ally's manager spoke to Jack and I realized what was about to happen and why.

damn, I just read your post. Tried to avoid spoilers before the movie. I feel like a dick for my take above this post. I will admit my opinion was probably coming from a place of ignorance and I should not be spouting off about stuff I dont fully understand. Sorry if you read my comments and felt insulted. Good to hear you were able to overcome that.

Fantastic. Not many movies get me like that.

I LOVE Walk The Line. There were several similarities I saw in there.

Great movie and will probably see again before it's out of the theaters.

Pretty good thread. Sounds like it's basically Northeast Los Angeles. I admit that it's kind of weird how nonspecific the movie is about locations in general...

That's super weird. I had that exact question and I was convinced it was New York, until they drove to Arizona on a motorcyle.

Saw it last night and enjoyed it a lot but didn't love it. Didn't cry and I am a huge crier when it comes to movies.

7/10

- I really had trouble getting past Gaga in it. I think she is insanely talented musically but her divaness made me not buy her dramatic moments. I see her as so uberdramatic all the time in her real life and performances that it just failed to resonate with me when she was dramatic in the film. I would have liked it better with another actress.

- It sucked that he basically never got through to her, until the last song I guess. But he tried his damnedest to get her to say something and all she did was make shallow pop crap.

- Some beautiful scenes and shots. Cooper did a fine job directing.

- I could see it get nominated for a few things, but would be disappointed if that ended up being the best movie I see this year.

- My one hope is that somehow Jason Isbell brings home a Best Song Oscar.

Well, scratch that apparently the idiots aren't even submitting the Isbell song for consideration. They are only submitting these three:

- "Shallow" (Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt)
- "I'll Never Love Again" (Lady Gaga, Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere)
- "Always Remember Us This Way" (Lady Gaga, Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Lori McKenna)

Annoying because I liked Isbell's song the best. Shallow will be the front runner, but while that song had moments, the chorus was too elementary. "Sh-ha-ha-ha-ha-hallow. The Shallow. Sh-ha-ha-ha..." Come on now!

I think not including his song was a mistake also. The shallow is obviously the most important in terms of the movie, and I really enjoy a lot of it (the chorus is kinda meh, I agree). Something about Maybe It's Time just..has depth, I dont know how to explain it.

I don't know. I heard it on the radio yesterday and it just reinforced the horrible chorus to me, plus the second chorus leads straight into a bridge that consists solely of Gaga making vocal gymnastic noises "la la la laaaa oohhhh OHHH ohhhhh" to the melody.

Agree the Isbell song has much more depth.

I don't recall it, what part of the movie did it play in? Edit: Nvm, got it.

Eh, it's good but nothing special IMO. It's not particularly important to the story, either.

You have to think Shallow gets the Oscar. Outside of that chorus, it's a great song and the most memorable in the movie.

I think it's important to the story. He's singing about how he needs to change his old ways and much of the movie is him struggling to do that. And ultimately his old ways was his demise.

This movie was incredible at using songs that were important to the story. The most obvious being Gaga's "Why Did You Do That?" with the line of "This is not, not like me."

We saw this tonight and it was enjoyable I loved the acting, cinematography, and much of the music but I felt the story was 100% predictable. Essentially from the drag queen bar scene onward it felt like I was just waiting for the next shoe to drop and it was formulaic and basic.

Great acting, great production, boring and tired story.

3/5 would not see again.

For me it was that GaGas choice in music and "selling out" made her wildly unlikable.

I enjoyed it, music, acting and production was great, however, the plot was very predictable, you knew that something bad was going to happen to Jack after probably 20 minutes and knew suicide was imminent after the conversation with Ally's manager.

Edit to add - with a star is born and The Mule out this year, I think Bradley Cooper is undeniably the biggest star in Hollywood at this time and has cemented himself as an all time great right up there with best of them.

A movie that has been remade three times is usually predictable.

I had no idea it was a remake, in my defense.

The more I ponder this movie the more I see it as a veiled critique by GaGa about the genre of music that made her a ton of cash. I know she is more gifted than her image portrays and know she is a huge fan of rock & metal (Iron Maiden in particular) and I think her portrayal of the pop music manager guy and how unlikable her character became after turning to pop may be her way of getting back at the industry she fell in to.

Pretty brilliant aside from the predictable love story/tragedy that was the main thrust of the story.

Now this may be just because I hate modern pop music and think overproduction and background dancers have destroyed the MESSAGE of rock & soul music.
