Love the show. Really do not like Sydney at all. I swear she is on the specturm - she is just a strange person, that really cannot communicate with other people.

She very well may be, not at all uncommon for people who work in very high effort craft type fields.

So what if she is?

Her indecision, regarding to stay or leave The Bear, was dragged out way too long over the past two seasons. Then add in her inability to express her feelings in a fully formed sentence combined with her refusal to even try expressing her feelings in any form or fashion. Altogether it was too frustrating of a character arc to drag out that long. It all just got to the point it was annoying, and I came away just done with her as a character, for now at least.

Just another symptom of them stretching this show too thin. Should have been 3 seasons total, tops.

I completely agree with this take. I am so tired of her indecision on what to do. I don't want to sit for an entire new season of that same thing. That particular story line should have have been the main drama for a single season that starts at the beginning and comes to a conclusion at the season finale. Then, we should be done with it.

I watch shows and movies because I love great characters and stories. A character is great in these mediums when they go through an actual character arc. But that implies the beginning and end of an arc. Not a constant slew of the same problem for the entire series.

Agreed about Sydney. I love nearly every character...or at least find them interesting, except her.

Sydney is just annoying. Her indecision was uninteresting and completely unwarranted. People get job offers...take the other job or dont, good gosh. And don't freak out when you're basically gifted a restaurant, a couple years after wandering in off the street. And while everyone has issues, she's perpetually mad and holding a grudge with someone, seemingly without the ability to talk through it with them.

Love the show. Love the characters...just not hers.

Her indecision is very warranted. She's trying to choose between people she obviously cares a lot about and a dysfunctional restaurant that also has a lot of potential and a position that seems incredible on the surface but comes with a lot more unknowns. That's a very tough decision with a lot of personal and professional implications.

She followed Carmy to The Beef because he's someone she looks up to professionally. Learning from him and being around a chef as good as him is a large part of why she's there in the first place. Of course she's going to freak out when he wants to walk away and leave it to her. Learning from his experience was why she was there in the first place, but now she's on her own in a somewhat prestigious but also incredibly challenging position that she probably feels unprepared for.

She's almost perpetually frustrated with Carmy because despite having a lot of professional respect for him, his personal problems continually create issues for her and the restaurant. His inability to lock in the menu to challenge himself is what drove them to the brink and hurt the review. He also proved unreliable personally throughout much of the renovation. She was being stuck with a lot of work and decisions because his mind was elsewhere and he was being a terrible partner. Despite promises to do better, he often falls short.

I think she's a great character

I hear you. And I understand all those things about her character.

I just disagree. They're all torn about different things, and changing as people. I just find her annoying.

I didn't like season 4 quite as much as 1&2, but it was definitely less chaotic than 3.

Sydney is driving me nuts right now. The acting is great, but they're focusing way too much on her. Entire episodes devoted to what could have been done in a scene or two with the same impact.

I think my biggest frustration with the character is everyone is getting better *except* for her. For the first couple seasons, she was the innocent voice of reason who happened to be a little neurotic.

But since then, Richie has turned into a new person and is the most diligently self-aware memberof the group, Carmy is realizing how much help he needs... Tina, Marcus, Ebra... Everyone is making strides except her, even JLC who is incredible in this. And she keeps acting like everyone else is the problem. Eventually she needs to deal with herself.

I think she's a great character

I think she suffers from low self esteem, they just don't come out and say it. She does things for those around her, rarely for herself. She lived with her dad well into adulthood. She's at The Bear to support Carmy's vision and rarely stands up for herself. It made sense to me that she both didn't take Shapiro's offer and also freaked out at the end of the last episode when Carmy wants to walk away. She's not confident that she can be head chef and that news was crushing to her.

I think she's a great foil to Carmy because she's the opposite of him.
