CBS is probably looking at Colbert's ratings this week wondering what the uptick in viewership from extremely conservative homes in Texas is all about Thanks, TexAgs!

CBS's Late Show was the only show among the nine tracked by LateNighter to draw more total viewers in Q2 than it had in the first quarter of 2025--although just barely, with the show growing its audience by 1% quarter over quarter. All told, the Stephen Colbert-hosted show averaged 2.42 million viewers across 41 first-run episodes, comfortably outpacing ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! (1.77 million) and NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (1.19 million).

If only there was a way to figure out who the guest was without having watched the show

I'm on the politics board actually defending South Park. So ya, you're wrong again.

The only thing Colbert wrecked was Paramount's bottom line. And that's why he's out of a job.

All you're proving with this post is that we are correct in that it's a dying format. Kimmel and Fallon are next.

Carson drew 55 million viewers for his last show. What do you think Colbert will get?

I thought Colbert was hilarious on Comedy Central. And he's terrible on this format.

It's really that simple to most of us.

I recently saw a clip of Johnny Carson explaining why he wouldn't take on heavy topics and alienate people by using his platform. But apparently, Colbert never saw that or took it to heart.

Last I checked, CBS is not the only channel on tv. If Colbert has an audience that makes his show financially viable, I have no doubt he'll land on his feet. And if this is truly a terrible decision on CBS's part, they'll have to live with that. Time will tell.

It hasn't wrecked people. It's wrecked CBS' P&L. It's not derangement to laugh at a show featuring Josh Shapiro and trying to pass it off as quality entertainment while wondering why it's getting canceled.

And where have I whined about Southpark? Great show that hammers everyone.

Well played, sir

A show that has a production budget over $100 million, and is only watched by a small audience outside the key demographic is likely not to work anywhere.

He's so popular, the show loses over $40 million a year. Touche - you got us.

It's the same issue Ive brought up on a few different threads...you have to choose to either have a BIG BUDGET and go for a BIG AUDIENCE or a SMALL BUDGET for a SMALL AUDIENCE. The entertainment industry keeps ramming its head into the wall producing big budget shows/movies that, due to being made by political bozos, will never draw a large audience.

Star Wars productions should have a massive budget and draw in a massive audience, as long as you're willing to do the most obvious thing in the world and make a show that will appeal principally to men ages 5 and up, with all the same ingredients as the old trilogy. Not rocket science. But hand the project to an unproven woke lady who writes the series "for me as a young girl" and it's dead on arrival, never a chance.

Colbert as an angry, ranting DNC mouthpiece should have a podcast series with a modest budget. Give him a couple million dollars and a little room to have his guests on and talk at the audience daily about orange man and what not and it will have enough listeners of that variety to stay afloat. Letting him do that on an expensive set with hundreds of staff and a large budget was another financial disaster anyone could have predicted.

These companies have to be headed by pragmatic dudes who know what people want and just give it to them. The last few years have been full of expensive lesson after expensive lesson about what the American audience is really tired of.

Agreed. I think Cliff hit the nail on the head. Colbert has an audience, just not an audience that justifies a show with a $100 mill/year budget.

No, people have said it's because he lost $40 million a year for his employer. The reason for his terrible ratings is irrelevant.

He just sucks at his actual job, which is selling advertising. And that's why he lost his job.

So because they were losing money, the company just happened to decide to completely shut down production and fire the entire staff of a long running institution rather than find cost savings right before they needed the partisan FCC to sign off of their merger. Sure. That smells above the board.

I don't see why people are trying to make it more complicated than this. His show was incinerating cash and the bonfire was only going to get bigger because his show sat in a vanishing market segment. The decision to cancel him now instead of in 3 months may have had a political element, but the fact remains that if his show had been making money, it wouldn't have been canceled.

Yes. It's the most obvious answer with the fewest assumptions necessary. If there's any real question it's why it took this long.

This wasn't a show close to profitability and just needed some fat trimmed. It was hemorrhaging money. And the format itself is a loser. There's no saving that. And there's no real impetus to try.

To be profitable meant cutting the budget in half, not just some cost savings here and there.

No idea if the info is available anywhere but for those claiming that networks usually try cost cutting methods first, has that ever been done for a show this deep in the hole?

You sound like somebody defending blockbuster video in 2010.

Streaming services + social media are killing the late night talk show. The aggregate viewership numbers are already much smaller than they were at their peak and consumption habits among young people mean that the problem gets worse every year. This means there's no way to save a show with a staff of 200 that's somehow losing $40M a year. Even if you make massive cuts and replace some segments with AI slop to bring it back into profitability, in 2-3 years you're losing money again.

Merger considerations may have moved up Colbert's demise by a few months (I don't know this, but it's possible I guess), but his show was doomed because the late night talk show format is doomed.

I think the biggest issue with the "hey why didn't they just try to retool this show with terrible ratings" bit is that it looks at today's picture. It lost $40 million in $100 million production last year. Next years ad revenue will be worse. And the year after that as well. Purely based on the format. So even if you massively rework it all there's a likelihood it's all for not anyway.

They saw the writing on the wall and cut bait. There's a reason they didn't replace him with someone else.

Colbert does seem like the type to happily take a 50% pay cut, fire half his staff, and adjust the format to something more entertaining and less politically divisive.

Reality, they are going to do something new and he'll land where most people like him are these days - podcasting. Going separate ways is how this stuff always works out

Agreed. Throw in Colbert's contract expiring, letting the outgoing company pull the plug, and you just have the perfect time to do it.

I don't know anybody that watches late night shows anymore that isn't a Boomer. I haven't been able to stand and watch them for 15 years.

I agree that it needs to go away for awhile and rethink the format. I actually think if it was more intimate, interviews more candid, and focused more on the band, and interactions with the live crowd it might be compelling, but they all suck as they are today.

5 years from now, CBS will be thought of as a front-runner for dumping this cash hole when it did. Fallon will be the last one standing because NBC will really struggle to kill the Tonight Show.

Their 9-hour morning shows will be the next domino.

Honestly, they could put 60 minutes of FailArmy on at 10:30 p.m and probably get better ratings from the amount of youg people who are drunk, high or home and bored at that time to of night.
