And from what I am seeing, the FCC may have got involved after his comments about the Kirk assassination on Monday. I kind of doubt he ever makes it back on air in this capacity with the dwindling numbers talk shows are doing.

Interestingly, before it was announced nationwide, I believe nexstar announced they would be pulling him off their channels.

And this was the comment that caused all of this

I'll let the full story come out before commenting. I see a lot of people say it's government pressure, but I would like to avoid the gaslighting.

Also... Well... Bye.

I don't love the guy, but pretty tame comments to be pulling the FCC card.

Of all the things that were said that got people in trouble, this seems pretty mild for this reaction.

Yeah, I had only seen headlines in passing, assumed Kimmel had gone all-in on the-shooter-is-MAGA nonsense, and was fully prepared to rip him for it, but I just watched the clip for the first time and I genuinely don't understand what the issue is.

Here are the type of things people were being canceled over in the height of the woke era. Surely you can see a difference between what is going on now and what was going on then.

It wasn't the FCC, it was Nextstar the forced ABC to do it.

Yea that's why I said 'may'. Saw a lot of people mentioning it but no statements like the one from nexstar, so only mentioned it as a possibility.

well the head of the FCC said this on a podcast today. Seems pretty apparent they were going to go after Disney/ABC.

Quote:

"We can do this the easy way or the hard way," Carr said. "These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there's going to be additional work for the FCC ahead."
Carr added that the broadcasters, including ABC, "have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest."

Lol, even if they did I seriously seriously doubt the White House or FCC even really needed to get involved. The issue is simple economics....during a horrible tragedy Kimmel just couldn't resist sowing more division. Nexstar felt heat from viewers I'm sure, or wanted to jump out in front of it, so they did what was in their power - preempt his show for something else. Consequently, ABC is doing damage control.

Hell, like SeaSpeed alluded to, pretty sure his ratings were in the crapper so this becomes a convenient excuse to get rid of a sinking ship.

I can't keep up with whether MAGA is pro or anti cancel culture. It almost seems to depend on the politics of whoever is being cancelled.
Thanks and gig'em

Like, this is obviously a dumb/inaccurate thing to say on Kimmel's part. And if this would have solely been Disney/ABC's decision, I get it, that's fine. They can obviously do what they want in that regard...

It's this part that's concerning. Basically, the FCC/government playing bully last Thursday when Carr "threatened to take action against ABC" for Kimmel's comments, which is beyond ****ed up and against everything this country stand for...

The govt pushed social media companies to suppress and/or ban people that were posting things they didn't like in 20/21. They actually took direct action. In this instance, there was no direct action taken, only vague threats of "easy way or hard way". Granted, there may have been in the future, but up to this point, there wasn't. ETA - the govt also used its full weight to get people fired for not taking a shot. Many people lost their livelihoods due to this.

I hate politics on the E-board, but this particular topic is inherently political. So, I'll just say this....the country was headed in an authoritarian direction prior to Trump taking office. He might not be altering the ship's direction, but he certainly didn't start it on its present course.

I still remember when Biden took office he stated that a national mask mandate was called for (for COVID), that FEMA and the National Guard should be utilized in dealing with it since its a national emergency, and that it was our Patriotic Duty to go along with it. Authoritarian much?

It was bad then and it's bad now. Both sides are guilty of it and I hate it all.

Boat sides are for it and against it. It just depends on which side is getting cancelled.

This both sides **** is so tiresome. The link above shows how petty and ridiculous it was for people who were doing things as innocuous as making an OK symbol with their hand. The only people who are having issues now are those who openly celebrate or mock a man that was murdered in cold blood in front of his family and thousands of fans for daring to have free and unfettered conversations about topics he believed to be important in this country. He was murdered because the people that mock him openly called him and the people that hold those same opinions Nazis and fascists.

I do see the difference, and don't call me Shirley.

It is just a bit ironic that one side decried cancel culture until it was their turn with the ball. It is ghey when either side does it, but you can't get too upset when the pendulum swings the other way.

Except Kimmel did none of these things. He (stupidly) implied that the shooter is MAGA and then (rightfully) highlighted Trump's bat**** insane answer/lack of emotion. No where in that clip did he celebrate Kirk's death or mock Kirk himself.

Yeah, I figured this thread was to discuss what Kimmel said. Not turn into a, "oh yeah, but did you see what they did", thread. If someone is yearning for that discussion, they should be able to get their fix if they scroll just a little further down.

No, he made a bald faced lie about the shooter being something he very clearly was not.
TCTTS

We both agree that what Kimmel said was ridiculous, a lie, etc, etc.

That's not the issue, though.

It's whether the United States government should be able to threaten a media company into submission over the on-air words of a United States citizen/comedian.

You may hate what Kimmel said, and what he said may even make him a bad person. But he should still have the right to say what he said whether you like it or not. That's... the entire point.

Again, Kimmel's speech isn't free of consequences from his employer. But his speech should absolutely be free of consequences from our government, and today that line was blurred, if not blatantly crossed.

He's a dip**** with a dying audience whose show already loses a ****ton of $$$ and now he pissed off a chunk of people still watching (albeit I don't know what they would still be watching). This is a mercy killing

I'll always prefer to leave things to the marketplace instead of the government. You can't be pro-small government but then applaud the government stepping into the middle of a situation like this.

But I still believe the decision was made because of Nexstar's actions (convenient because of the falling ratings of all late night talk shows), not a threat from the FCC.
