We've all been transitioned to 1st Responders for management. What a sad existence the narcissistic, vapid middle managers have evolved to. Bring on AI to eliminate box checker duches.

I'm there now. I spent the last four years working a deal meticulously working with my partners to bring it to fruition only to have my boss come in the last year and commandeer the entire project. Sure, I got credit as a co-manager, but all the high profile engagements that took place occurred with my boss in the lead. When kudos were issued, they came across as "bosses's name and team." This was a deal that I originated and worked for three years before she ever came along and to have my contribution be relegated to some part of a "team" has really rubbed me the wrong way and caused a lot of distrust between me and my boss. This deal will be announced nationally and it really is a big deal that I nurtured and worked. Thankfully I'm at a point where I can retire today (52 years old) and just walk, but I'd like to get three more years before I pull the trigger on retirement and get my youngest out of high school first. It is a struggle to go back to work. We spent the last two weeks scouting where we might retire and we've settled on Coeur D'Alene, ID. It is calling my name and one bad day or interaction with my boss may just push me to take the plunge.

I don't understand. You live at this guys house? Turn off the phone. Block the number. You'd be surprised what the man can figure out when he doesn't have another option.

I don't know where you work, but for me when my boss calls me anytime day or night I better take that call if I want to stay employed. It's like that for most of us. If you have a good leader, they know those boundaries and don't abuse them. Bad leaders, love to show you the opposite.

I am going through this now and am beyond burned out. It is an incredibly tough market in my line of work, so finding a new role has been a long and grueling process. My girlfriend said I have aged 5 years in the last 6 months. My facial hair is nearly all white and I am only 42.
This is sooooo true for me:Quote:
But I have also come to accept that the amount of money I make demands some misery from time to time, and it's always going to be that way. I am open to other opportunities, but there is nowhere else I can go to have the same situation (a lot of freedom, only really answer to one person) and make as much money as I make.
I think for me what is the most difficult is my commute, the number of weekend calls I take now, no clear role definitions and being pulled in so many directions. Not having a clear role is so infuriating because you become an SME on everything and everyone wants your time. There are a lot of moving parts going on and so juggling them has been tough. We are slated to shut down my facilities(coal power generation) in 2.5 years with no clear path on retention strategies, new roles after closure and many other things aligned with closure. It is difficult to look your team in the eye and not have an answer and know that none of it is in your control, it is up to the state government and C level guys.
I have given it to God and let him take control at this point. It will be what he wants it to be. This role and situation is teaching me a lot of patience, grace and being present for my people.

This sounds exactly like my job. I know too much without a clearly defined role. I keep getting passed around to different teams without any real opportunities for advancement. I've thought about leaving, but my job is too comfortable with the location and my kids being in school. Getting a new job would not be ideal for them if I had to move. There is too much uncertainty that a new job would bring compared to staying put at a job I dislike more each day. It's like Office Space. Today is the worst day of my life, and each day is worse, so each day you see me at work is on the worst day of my life.
