We've all been transitioned to 1st Responders for management. What a sad existence the narcissistic, vapid middle managers have evolved to. Bring on AI to eliminate box checker duches.

I thin a lot of it is upper management completely forgetting where they came from and being oblivious to what their requests get turned into downstream.

Most people, looking to advance, will jump on it and take everything as a firedrill to show how good they are. It creates unsustainable processes, upper management get a bit of a power trip, mid management sacrifice their team's time/sanity getting jerked around.

No one likes to look at what it costs people to continually operate like that long term.

I've read some books about simplification and one of them touched on being able to tell people "No". Most companies, I would imagine, make people afraid to say it, which is part of the problem as well.

Yes I had a former boss that was the worst at saying no and managing workload. He burnt out, and it really affected his home life too. He was a terrible delegator of work so that didn't help anything either. The stuff he was doing was not sustainable and a lot of it was short sighted.

Wish you guys were hiring design engineers…

I've kicked off my search. It sucks. Move halfway across the country thinking I was getting a design role, and instead I'm a glorified project manager. I don't really want to make another major move, and certainly not as soon as this, but it certainly seems that to get back into a position like what I had (and loved) I'm going to have to.

I'm there now. I spent the last four years working a deal meticulously working with my partners to bring it to fruition only to have my boss come in the last year and commandeer the entire project. Sure, I got credit as a co-manager, but all the high profile engagements that took place occurred with my boss in the lead. When kudos were issued, they came across as "bosses's name and team." This was a deal that I originated and worked for three years before she ever came along and to have my contribution be relegated to some part of a "team" has really rubbed me the wrong way and caused a lot of distrust between me and my boss. This deal will be announced nationally and it really is a big deal that I nurtured and worked. Thankfully I'm at a point where I can retire today (52 years old) and just walk, but I'd like to get three more years before I pull the trigger on retirement and get my youngest out of high school first. It is a struggle to go back to work. We spent the last two weeks scouting where we might retire and we've settled on Coeur D'Alene, ID. It is calling my name and one bad day or interaction with my boss may just push me to take the plunge.

I just resolved this issue myself tonight. After 20 yrs of policing, I resigned tonight and will be taking a role in the local school district. I'm choosing to prioritize my family over career even with it meaning that I take a massive pay cut. Life's too short to spend it being miserable.

Love my job, but my boss is the problem. He micromanages all of his direct subordinates. No boundaries with personal time. You are expected to be at his beck and call 24/7.

I have started looking. Life is too short to put up with that BS.

I don't understand. You live at this guys house? Turn off the phone. Block the number. You'd be surprised what the man can figure out when he doesn't have another option.

I hate it when the parasites take credit for my work. I have decided to let it go as long as the checks clear.

Just took a new role 4-5 months ago. Been absolute hell. Role is not what I thought it be and I'm not performing at expectations, which means I already have a target on my back for year end when they do performance reviews.

Hate my job, but feel paralyzed to pivot out of the industry given i'm somewhat tenured and have golden handcuffs. But this situation will come to a head soon enough if I can't get my act together (not taking 100% blame here as I'm not getting much of a leash / support).

So yeah, know the feeling. Looking how to navigate turbulent times is stressful, but this too shall pass.

I don't know where you work, but for me when my boss calls me anytime day or night I better take that call if I want to stay employed. It's like that for most of us. If you have a good leader, they know those boundaries and don't abuse them. Bad leaders, love to show you the opposite.

You gotta wean them off the teat. Don't answer when they call. Call them back 10-15 minutes later with a legitimate reason. 'Sorry, I was in the shower.' 'Sorry, I was in the pool.' 10-15 minutes becomes 20-30. Pretty soon, they will find another crutch to lean on.
Now, this will have consequences. You won't be the favorite and will likely get passed over for good things, but the calls will slow down. In the long run you don't want to work under this person anyway, so start making your way out.

Ive been self employed for a decade but I've been in a corporate job in O&G as a peon and a manager in my early career. I DID have a manager like that. I had to do exactly what I said for 5 years. I left early on Fridays to avoid last minute stuff. My phone sent his number to VM permanently the first time he left a message. It didn't stop him from doing it but it stopped me from knowing about it. You CANNOT tolerate that. I have a family and boundaries. My boundaries are no more than 40 hours a week. Want me there at 5am? Cool. I'm leaving at 2pm. Want me there until 7pm? Cool. I'll be in tomorrow at 10am or leaving at 3pm. I always maintained that balance closely. The fear of being fired is leveraged and abused by many.

You need to realize that if he's bugging you all weekend, then clearly he can't do it himself. If you were fired, his fear of incompetence would be made worse. Managers like that don't understand your boundaries because you haven't made them clear and you'll be miserable because of it. That's why this thread exists in the first place. Think of this like the "cry it out" method you use with toddlers.

Here. This is honestly my least favorite job I've ever had, but I'm good at it. I help people and I help my coworkers and the company is good, I just don't like it. It was bearable when I was making quite a lot of money, but the market has dried up and without the golden handcuffs, its really hitting me how much this job costs me personally. My experience, location, and whatnot does make it hard to figure out exactly how to pivot,

I am going through this now and am beyond burned out. It is an incredibly tough market in my line of work, so finding a new role has been a long and grueling process. My girlfriend said I have aged 5 years in the last 6 months. My facial hair is nearly all white and I am only 42.

This is sooooo true for me:

Quote:

But I have also come to accept that the amount of money I make demands some misery from time to time, and it's always going to be that way. I am open to other opportunities, but there is nowhere else I can go to have the same situation (a lot of freedom, only really answer to one person) and make as much money as I make.

I think for me what is the most difficult is my commute, the number of weekend calls I take now, no clear role definitions and being pulled in so many directions. Not having a clear role is so infuriating because you become an SME on everything and everyone wants your time. There are a lot of moving parts going on and so juggling them has been tough. We are slated to shut down my facilities(coal power generation) in 2.5 years with no clear path on retention strategies, new roles after closure and many other things aligned with closure. It is difficult to look your team in the eye and not have an answer and know that none of it is in your control, it is up to the state government and C level guys.

I have given it to God and let him take control at this point. It will be what he wants it to be. This role and situation is teaching me a lot of patience, grace and being present for my people.

This sounds exactly like my job. I know too much without a clearly defined role. I keep getting passed around to different teams without any real opportunities for advancement. I've thought about leaving, but my job is too comfortable with the location and my kids being in school. Getting a new job would not be ideal for them if I had to move. There is too much uncertainty that a new job would bring compared to staying put at a job I dislike more each day. It's like Office Space. Today is the worst day of my life, and each day is worse, so each day you see me at work is on the worst day of my life.

You have to give it to God.

I got laid off in 2014 at a job that I thought was gonna be the best I had ever had. Luckily, I could see the writing on the wall, and took a teaching position back here in East Tennessee. I never wanted to teach, but it was a back up plan.

Kept on trying for years and years and years to get out of teaching, but every time I tried, I failed. Finally, got a job at a local university that I have been trying to work for - had applied for over 2 to 300 jobs, but I had not applied effectively.

No stress job: it's the best ever. Pays a little less than teaching, but with all of the PTO and other good benefits and flexible schedule, it's well worth it.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

You really wanna work the rest of your life on call 24/7? If not, find another boss (job,) or start enforcing boundaries. You were not hired to work 24/7. I had a boss like that. It's what finally pushed me out of the job, and I totally shifted industries. It was a little bit of a struggle for a couple years, but now I make more than I ever did and don't answer calls on my days off.

Got an interview Friday! Lots of different thoughts and emotions about this one, and the weight of the life change that would come with it is really heavy upon me right now. But, after yet another 12 hour day that caused me to miss spending time with my family, I know something has to change.

Life is too short to go through it hating one's job. Just go under the radar, stop fighting the system and look for a new job.
