I am in major purge mode. I have several hundred CDs and movie DVDs that I have no want or need for any further. As far as I can tell any money that I would get out of selling, these things would frankly not be worth the effort. I see huge batches going on eBay for very little money. I've heard secondhand that taking them to someplace like half price books will net you a quote of very few dollars for the entire lot. I'm not interested in building a media server because I don't rewatch old movies and I have Spotify so I can listen to any music I want to on demand.Any suggestions? I hate throwing things in the landfill but at this point they might be headed there on Saturday morning.

Getting a few bucks from Half Price Books or a pawn shop sounds better than paying to throw them in a landfill.

You could donate them to Goodwill or a women's shelter.

Libraries will take them as well if avoiding a landfill.

If you have any Criterion editions, they may be worth a little something.

Not sure why that did not occur to me but… Donating sounds like the way to go! I'll get them together and add them to our next donation run.

What is your CD collection made up of?

I just donated a bunch of my Old DVDs to a resale place that gave proceeds to a Women's shelter and just did a tax write off because I got a little more per DVD than I would if I sold them to a used DVD place or Half price books. It's ridiculous those places offer you .50-$1 each and then sell them for $10 or something. I know the demand isn't great anymore but .50 for a double blu ray is a ripoff. So I felt better donating them. Unless you have some rare out of print DVD or Blu Ray that may sell for a lot, there is no resale value. Welcome to 2025.

I always box that stuff all up and take it to half priced books. Let them rummage through it and offer you whatever amount for whichever CD's/movies/books. Anything they don't want, I just toss.

Half Price offered the guy in front of me $700 for his dvd/cd collection. I joked that I was hoping for a higher offer after the last guy when offered $13. She said it was rare they go that high, but he had a lot of stuff actually in demand. Like TV show box sets and classic rock cds.

They make decent coasters.

Please do not throw them out, worst case scenario, please offer them for free on Marketplace or somewhere else like that. Also, if you are near DFW, I would check out Josey Records for trade in!

Libraries typically don't want your donations. If you don't want it, chances are other people don't want it either. It just takes up space until they throw it out at the end of the year.

Good call, I was all about streaming when you had basically everything between Hulu and Netflix. Then everybody else decided to get into the game for the low, low introductory price of $14.99/month and stuff was either edited or pulled (see: Seinfeld Puerto Rico Day) and I just said to hell with it and went back to picking up stuff I liked when I encountered it at a thrift store

My binder of DVDs has moved with me from every apartment, house, etc. Even when I when I was couch surfing for awhile. It always goes with me.

Where are you located, maybe people can take them instead of trash? If Houston area, I'd be interested.

Because we know that means millions of baby shards of plastic all over the land for 100 years.

If you send the DVDs to me, I can rip them and send you back a USB stick with them. No guarantees on response time though, I don't have much free time.
