Skiing Bach this week. First XC race next weekend in Madras. Palisades skiing/Mt. Whitney race last weekend of April.

Expect there'll be a lot of traffic for the U12 championships at Bach.

Regarding ski storage..."gravity grabber" must spend a lot of marketing money because they show up in my socials feed a lot. Pretty cool looking option.

This is what I'm using in the garage. It's kind of a PITA because I need to adjust it to hit another stud. For now I only hang nordic skis on one side of it.

I do have to use velcro straps to keep skis from flexing and falling off. But, I can get 4 sets of nordic and 5 sets of alpine skis on 1 rack.

Purg shut the backside. A friend runs snowcats and they are robbing from closed runs to keep the frontside open. No way they are open past next weekend…

My son and I skied Sun Valley, ID Thursday and Friday. It was great. Mountain almost 100% open and they say a 74" base. Hot though. A lot of their success is in the direction the mountain faces, along with the most extravagant snow-making system I've seen. Even 1 of their bowls had some snowmaking. And the top of the mountain between lift and lodge. Crazy. Also one of the steepest mountains I've skied. Their greens were like blues at Steamboat (where we typically go) and blues were like blacks. Great vibe. Lots of rich locals and never a lift line. Ketchum was a cool town. Old and new but not busy or huge. Very impressed with the Idaho mountains. Will go back for sure. Also, they landed the FIS World Cup World Championships next year. Will be huge.

We may have to take a trip down to watch that. My girls (and myself) would love to see Shiffrin and Johnson ski in person.

Sun Valley is one of my favorite hills on Earth. World Class snowmaking, steep and groomer paradise. I can knock out 50k of vert by lunch. I burned all my Ikon days in December. They also allow up-hilling both before and after hours!

Ketchum is also just THE BEST in summer. There's all-time camping near the gate of Trail Creek road. Early morning gravel bike ride up the pass with the fly rod.

Rebecca's is a major hitter race now for US gravel: https://www.rebeccasprivateidaho.com/

20 minutes further up the road you have Galena Lodge: https://www.galenalodge.com/

Another 20 minutes and Redfish in Stanley: https://redfishlake.com/. It's Tahoe, but better mountains and people.

We've boondocked all over the Sawtooths. I'd move to ID in a heartbeat if the wife would let me.

My buddy (Aggie also) and his son flew up a day earlier than us for some fishing. This was on the Salmon River, about an hour towards Stanley I believe. Steelhead.

Just FYI, there was no snow in Ketchum, but you just drive about 10 miles North, out of town, and snow everywhere. People cross-country skiing etc. Pretty wild.

By far no expert but I was always told to move my skis to the basement in the summer as the heat in the garage can damage the skis. No idea if true or not but that's what I do.
Gonna give it a go one last time for the season tomorrow up at Keystone. Not expecting much but like fishing any day on the mountain is a better day than in the office.

I've always heard about dry bases, edge/base rust and spring compression. But I don't think it actually matters that much.

Storage wax = warm temp wax. Apply it, but don't scrape it. Lower DINs to 1. Any rust will come off after some hard turns. But I tune them every 3-4th ski day anyways.

I really don't think it matters much. But tinkering with skis is fun, so I do prep them for storage.

Here's a fun, timely one from our local hill.

Deep dive into Heather Canyon prep:

In that video they talk about the 400' face that resides above Heather/Clark and it's inherent avy danger.

Well, it's slid naturally last week with enough mass and runout to be picked up on siesmic:
https://www.powder.com/news/seismic-avalanche-mt-hood-oregon

The run-out was 4,500'. Although it started out-of-bounds, Clark and the Heather run-out are in-bounds for Meadows.

Crazy debris stack:

Whats a basement?

I don't keep anything in my garage that that I have any intwrest in ever being nice ever again.

Funny story: last year after a storm I noticed my neighbor who moved to Houston from salt Lake struggling to saw up a big branch that had fallen in his yard with a rusty hand saw. Always willing to run a chainsaw, I grabbed mine and headed over. He complained to me, "How do you keep everything from rusting up in your garage in Houston?"

"Easy, move back to salt Lake."

I had big bucks completion skis - put them in the corner or your ****ing closet. Y'all sound like a 3,000 or 4,000 mile oil change debate.

Coming up and over Loveland this morning, don't believe I've ever seen it this bare during the season. Looks like Keystone is closing on 4 April. Hope they make it, lots of bare spots riding up the gondola. Mountain is empty as well.

Normally more snow at the pass in mid-June than what's in your pic.

That's boring. Half the fun of my hobbies (bikes, skis, photography, van, Seiko mods) is the gear. I like the maintenance / tinkering.

DIN springs will wear down over time. Probably not before you blow out a base/mount/brake, but they will eventually. Lowing objectively buys you lifespan.

Again, dry bases I think are a myth. But clean and wax is just a good starting point for next season. I'm also skiing through July/August here. First true tours can start as early as October. It's not a ton of downtime and I do ski at least once a month for the TAY streak.

I think it's more likely the wax deters slow oxidation of the base plastic that can make it more brittle over time.

The Yampa and White Rivers in Northwest Colorado have turned to chocolate milk. Runoff has begun. I imagine it will go fast, as there is not much snowpack left in the White River National Forest. I cant access my elk hunting grounds till July usually. We are planning on going up there this weekend with anticipation of a little snow left.

Schweitzer moved closing up a week. Time to get some wax ordered and start shutting down the wax bench for the year.

I need to get some base file guides before next season.

Then I need to start watching for a crazy discount on a pair of skis during the off season. Also need to find some slalom skis for oldest daughter.

The ski season is effectively over.

These are late April (if not May or June) conditions in mid-March. My experience is resorts typically close in April because the majority of their clientele have refocused to the beach and golf. It's a financial decision. Not a snow decision. Some of the best skiing I've had was March - late April.

This year the snow decision accelerated the financial decision. I bet these companies took it in the shorts this year, along with the local economies.

Season over (was a while back).

Worst year for every place I know in the Valley. Not even close. Not just lack of snow but no ability to create income because ski in the winter and raft or fishing guide in the summer etc isn't going to work this year.

Businesses are gonna fail and employees are already hurting and gonna hurt worse ad hours get cut back or establishments cl ose completely
It's going to be interesting whats still here next year. Vail Village is going through a huge transition and this season just accelerated the small mom and pops out by probs 5 years

If it wasn't for a COL 3/4 of the year that's 60% lower than Glenwood/Vail and SOXL throwing us a hail mary pass over the last 12 months, we'd be totally FD. I have kept the remote accounting side gig.

I know it's a dumb question, but what's the best way to demo a specific model ski? When I actually pay for demo skis, the options of boots and skis seem limited. Really want to try some Soul 102s
Bayou City

1. Call Shop
2. Ask If They Have Soul 102's

If They say yes:

3a: Rent them

If They say no:

3b: Ask If they know a Shop That does

If they know a shop:

4a: Call said shop

If they don't know a shop:

4b: Keep calling down the list.
