Almost didnt post this after seeing the awesome picture that 12f posted.

I have never come across a snapping turtle laying in the sun in the road like this before. At least I think it's a young snapping turtle. He was gone when we walked back by him though, so he wasn't too injured

Friend in Robertson County found this one on the porch. I'm gonna plead ignorance. I thought it was Hog Nose, they say Cotton Mouth. Don't judge me if I'm wrong. And Imgur sucks and i can't figure out how to post properly.

That is a harmless eastern hognose. I also live in Robertson County and see them quite frequently. Their color can vary quite a bit, but that is definitely not a cottonmouth. Poor thing, as I'd imagine they killed it in their ignorance.

Thanks for confirming. I didn't see any mascara, but the thickness threw me off. I didn't ask, but they probably dispatched it.

Most people would kill that snake because the pattern is pretty close to CM. It's not, but I can see how most people would think so - especially when flattening head out like in the picture.

It's dark and chunky, yes. But the pattern is not a cottonmouth, the head structure and nose is not a cottonmouth, and it's doing that little tail curl thing that I've only seen hognoses do.

On our back porch last night. I was very proud of my 11yo as he identified it as a water snake before I got home so that the wife and daughter didn't kill it. He sprayed shat everywhere and musked when I grabbed him with the snake grabber.
