A recent find of ours on the BBQ scene in the area is Smoke Daddy's in Navasota. Pretty good stuff for a little less coin and great folks there! For many in South CS, it will be a shorter trip than several spots in Bryan.

Great grilled cheese & tomato bisque.

Doesn't say much for the bbq if you order a grilled cheese sandwich.

Pretty sure that's a soup.

I think it's both a soup and a sandwich

But is it a meal?

One could argue that soup and sandwich is a meal.

Soup is a meal, at least done correctly.

I think in this case he probably meant brisket. Autocorrect strikes again?

Tomato brisket

Yeah

Because that's a menu item

Yeah grilled cheese brisket. Presumably some tomato sauce in there or something too. We'll have to see if he comes back and chimes in. We need clarification.

It is from Nam Cafe on a Sunday after an 8 AM to to 2 AM college football Saturday bender. Some might even consider it the best meal of all time.

Tried Martin's bbq today. Love the historic aspect, but food was not great. Got brisket, ribs, pinto beans & cole slaw. The brisket was VERY lean, not tender, little flavor. The ribs were tender, but little flavor. The cole slaw was fresh, had a strange flavor. Pintos were good.

I want to like this place, but likely won't be back anytime soon.

Back in the day I would go Martins and get a chopped beef sandwich and the warm German potato salad. Loved both. But I think BBQ has advanced to a much higher level in the decades since I was a Martins regular

I think they still have a place but they were never a top end place like 1775. They were a friendly place with a decent sandwich and good value

I honestly think that is an issue with a lot of restaurants that have been around awhile, and not just in BCS. They serve the same stuff they have always served and it was good back in the day, but everyone else has passed them and they haven't kept up and are living on past reputation.

Maybe Martin's can sell to 1775 and take over that building. Would give a ton of life to it and gets 1775 in town. Respectful way for Martins to pass the keys.

Probably two years ago, I had to go to CS City Hall and saw the brothers that own 1775 in a meeting in the Planning and Development Department. That suggested a location in town was in the works, but I haven't seen or heard anything since.

They could sure use some more space (especially one with restrooms instead of porta-potties), but I'm sure they also enjoy their presumably low overhead.

What are y'all's favorite happy hours in town? We have always liked Casa Do Brazil's when we come to visit family but are looking for something different than that. Marfa's is good too.

Knowing how tough it is to work with the city of CS, it would not surprise me if it's taken 2 years.

Golden Hour at DeBaca

I would also say don't sleep on drinks at Don Chente.

Editing to add Downtown Uncorked.

Just visited 1775 for the first time today and got the five meat sampler and a couple sides. Everything was fantastic. Watched some Troy/WV MCWS magic while we were at it.

Since the Portillos location on Texas has fallen through, I'd love a bbq concept to build there with plenty of seating and maybe space for some live music.

The sampler was $40 and it was a ton of food, the three of us filled up and still had left overs... I think the sides were $6/7 each, or something like that. Prices on sandwiches seemed a bit high but there was a ton of meat on them, like to of a pound. So definitely enough for 2 folks for a sandwich... On our sampler, we had 3 ribs, 3 slices of Turkey, 2 large slices of Brisket and some chunks, as well, a large scoop of pulled pork(I thought that was the best thing I had today) and a pepper-jack sausage link...

Plus tax and tip of course. It was cheaper than our last family meal out...

Portion size vs. cost, I would say it was inline with just about every other BBQ place, or maybe a bit cheaper, as everything is more expensive nowadays.

Regular lunch visits to Martins became tedious, wondering when your food was going to be delivered. And not just once, but many times...so our crew moved.
They run on minimal help, keeps the overhead low(er), but as BBQ and sides are all pre-cooked...a 20-25 minute wait didn't cut it. And often it was not crowded.

We need more live music venues. Places where you can get a good burger, a lone star, and listen to a guy on a stool play his guitar.

Forgot how good Napa Flats Bistro HH is too. They have a Pinot on tap from Thompson31Fifty that is $6 a glass. Great Aggie owned winery in Sonoma that makes great wine! Normally $80/bottle too, so $6/ glass is a steal!

Just follow Christopher Crow around. That's kind of his thing.

They have like two tables for 4+ and 3-4 that are 6-8+ IIRC.
