At $1,000 or under I would buy a vintage Omega Seamaster like this one:

Another good option is something like this Longines Conquest

Problem with those is that most people don't want to wear a 34mm watch these days

It's not just that. A lot of the vintage watches off of EBay you are also buying an expensive and drawn out project to get it in decent running order again in my experience.

Don't do the vintage watches to start collecting.

Can't recommend enough buying from FTAC2011. He can get you one in good shape for under $1,000. I just linked eBay for the pic. And if a 32-34mm dress watch (like a vintage Seamaster) is good enough for Sean Connery, it's good enough for me.

Try before you buy. I've owned 34 and 36mm watches with a 7.5" wrist. I felt like the 36 was just fine, the 34 was just too small. To each their own

(That Wittnauer may be a 33 actually)
(Another edit, I'm pretty sure it's 34)

First time post here. I am new to watches. "High end" for me right now is around the $1,000 mark. I have only ever owned watches that were sub $400. I want to take the next step to get a solid watch that doesn't break the bank for me. I want to get a nice watch but there are so many brands out there and I am not sure if some are considered knock offs or copy cats or whatever the correct terminology is.

I know I want a dive watch and a pilots watch. I have been eyeing two brands, Hamilton and Jack Mason.

I don't know much about these things, I do know I want an automatic, but I was hoping to get some opinions on what I should be considering and opinions these and other brands.

As the Catholic right wing liaison to the Watch thread, I must retract my endorsement of the CW Trident for fears it may lead to grave sin in direct violation of both Theology of the Body, and Genesis 38

Seems dangerous to wear in public then. I'll pass on a Ward if I have to worry about that.

And nothing bad can happen in London wearing luxury watches these days,…

I'll be there next week. I'm leaving mine at home after colleagues there have firsthand knowledge of bad stuff happening. Really sad times.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who tries to take sneaky pictures of watches I see in the wild… on the way to Chicago last week I saw a RM next to us as well.

I'm always skeptical of the RM in the wild sightings . So many fakes (or replicas/homages) of that watch

Yup. This is a known thing among the watch crowd. If you are in any way "around the masses", I wouldn't wear anything nicer than a Seiko/Hamilton/Tissot or a low level G-Shock.

I lived there for 5 years. I'd say it is no different than any other big city. Ie there's nothing really that specific to London that makes it more dangerous to wear a nice watch in the city. I know one person who got mugged for his… and it happened while he was riding a Lime Bike home through a rougher neighborhood drunk at like 2 in the morning. But you'd see Rolexes, Omegas, AP's etc. on wrists everywhere around City and Canary Wharf during decent hours.

I'd say phone theft and pick pockets are a much bigger concern.

I'm generally ambivalent towards Panerai but if I do ever get one, it's going to be the blacked out America's Cup edition.

I've been traveling to London for 20+ years and this will be the first time I'm actually paying more attenton to this stuff. I think it used to be like other big global cities where you were just smart about where you'd be at what tme of day/night. I've never once had an issue.

But now,...just too many real world occurrences to ignore.

London is lost unfortunately. One of my favorite cities, but wow, what a disaster that place is now.

Paging FTAC - I have a friend with a new Land-dweller that he is looking to sell. 36mm steel. He just doesn't like the look on his wrist. Wanted to see if you had any buyers.
