My wife's 2018 GX460 was totaled 5/31. Claim filed through our insurance (Travelers). Other party admitted fault immediately.

Damage is significant enough that we're not fighting the "totaled" determination - in fact we've already purchased a replacement GX.

However, the insurance company's evaluation and offer is disappointing. We expected around $33,000 based on comps from dealerships in the area, but Travelers is low-balling us at $25k minus deductible.

If we end up $1-2k apart that's fine just to be done with this, but $8,000 different is frustrating.

Anyone have experience dealing with this?

Provide your insurance company with the comps +/- 10k miles of yours from auto trader and let them subrogate. Travellers is pretty good about it.

We did, and that only increased their "evaluation" +$650.

Travelers has been pretty disappointing in this whole incident, too. Slow to respond, people going on vacation with no notice and no one to cover, etc.

I went 3 rounds with Progressive on a total value determination last year. Request a copy of their comps, then pick them apart. They were using comps that once I found the actual listings, were in terrible interior condition or had tampered odometers. I objected and they removed them, substituting better comps.

You can challenge by paying an independent adjuster or even a lawsuit, but that may cost you more than it's worth.

How many miles were on your '18? 2 years ago exactly we sold our 16 gx for 25k with a little over 100 k miles after buying a 23. Assuming you have lower miles, yours should be worth what you think.

My son's f150 was totaled by a stop sign runner 3 years ago and we haggled with their insurance Co- Snake Farm for over 6 months before agreeing to a price. It was not worth my time calling them waiting on hold, once a week but it became a matter of principle, eventually getting the sales agent involved sped things up…

I feel like a lot is dependent on who is handling your case.

I had a total loss claim w/ Progressive a few months ago and everything about it was as easy as I would hope. Biggest delay was the tow yard being a pain in releasing it. But once it was released, they totaled it w/in a couple weeks, payout was very fair (3 year old truck and payout was about what I paid for it), process of getting reimbursed for 2 new car seats very easy, etc.

A couple things to consider:
-Speak to the supervisor/manager if you don't think your claim handler is listening or understanding.
-You can invoke the appraisal clause section of your policy which takes the valuation out of their hands completely. You'll have to hire an appraiser and so will the insurance company, but that cost could end up being worth the price you pay and what those two appraisers agree on will be binding on you and the insurance company.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an independent appraiser?
