Thanks for sharing this man. I watched the whole series and lots of good info in there. Also watched the squat series. Excellent stuff!

I've been working with my son on tweaking some things with his squat and the squat video's are just what he needs to see.

Thanks for the deadlift info.

How many of y'all do farmer's carries? I've been doing them more and more - both single and double arm. Single I have to carry less in order to maintain an upright posture, but it really smokes my core.

When I do single, I just carry a 30-40lbs DB in one arm and alternate back and forth between hands on treadmill, changing sides every 0.05 miles for about 0.5-0.6 miles. When I do double, I do 50-75lbs and just do a lap around the free weights area, which isn't very big, and repeat until my forearms are smoked. Forearms/grip seems to be the limiting factor for me.

How much do y'all carry? And how far are you usually carrying? Wondering what is considered "good."

I do suitcase carries with a kettlebell probably every other week. I should do them more often but my legs are usually smoked and I tap out every other workout and don't do them.

Normally what I'll do is get the heaviest kettlebell we have and do about 6-8 slower tempo suitcase deadlifts with it and then go straight into about 20 steps with each foot. It's probably a little less than 10 yards or so.

Between the two of those things, my core is burning by the end of set 3, which is usually after all of my normal squats and heavy legs stuff.

I challenge my clients to carry their weight (1/2 in each hand) 4 lengths of my studio (I'll have to measure the distance tomorrow). I can do it with 100's or 1.33x my body weight.

Now look at So You Think You Can Bench.

Everyone thinks the bench is easy but to do it correctly... Very technical.

What do y'all use for apparel? I'm looking at getting some lifting shoes and possibly a weight belt and knee sleeves.

I lift in vans high tops and use the same Inzer 2-prong forever belt I've had for probably 30 years. Those things really do seem to last forever . I also have an Inzer lever belt but haven't used it in a long time. Never used knee sleeves (only used wraps), but there are others here that do.

Cheers, thanks. Those Inzer belts look real nice.

I lift in a pair of Xero Prios and currently use a Rogue Velcro belt. If you're gonna get a belt I wouldn't waste money on anything less than a great one bc it'll last forever and you'll want to upgrade some day anyways.

Going to get an Inzer belt and knee sleeves in the next month or two.

Debated on squat shoes but don't think I'll buy them until I'm working a lot more high bar/front squats into my routine, but that won't be for a year or two. If I do I'll either get the wide toe Tyr ones or Nike Romaleos.

I'm trying to remember, I think I used to load 45s on my Titan handles a couple years ago and my forearms would be absolutely fried. That'd be about 107/hand and I weigh anywhere from 220-240.

I'm much stronger now. Don't plan on doing farmer walks for awhile but may throw them in one day just to see my progress.

Just wanted to thank you for posting this. I binged watched this on my rest day yesterday and took 1-2 things into my bench today and had a phenomenal day on bench! Tied my PR and 10lbs shy of a major milestone. Shoulder felt great too.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Edit to add - bench is by far my best lift and something I am very familiar with, so don't assume you know everything. Everyone needs a teacher/coach, no matter your skill level.

I'm noticing that the muscles in my arm seem to be significantly smaller at week 12 than they were in week 8.

I'm still gaining strength, but my sleeves aren't "hugging" my arms like they were before. They do seem to be more "cut" and "defined".

Is this a part of the body recomposition phase? Maybe I'm losing fat in my arms which makes the muscles look smaller? Or have I possibly hit the point where I can't lose much more fat and keep gaining muscle? What can I do?

Probably water or fat

This

Unless you're 5% body fat (which from your recent pictures you're definitely not), you can always lose more fat. But if your strength is still progressing while your arms are smaller (and I'm assuming you're doing upper body work), then it's most likely that you are losing both fat while preserving muscle…or even add a small bit of muscle. hence- body recomposition.

THe more fat you lose, the more wide swings you'll see in muscle size with a pump, or with changes in salt/carbs/water intake. More muscle = more carb storage as glycogen, so you can legitimately "carb up" and see actual visual changes.

Cool, thanks.

This is all pretty new to me and I'm admittedly micro-analyzing every muscle in my body every day lol

The leaner you get, the more you notice those changes on a day to day level! It's crazy.

Being pumped in the gym just looks so wild to me. You'll never be as big as your pump, but it's still fun!

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I hope that this is not redundant to something that has already been discussed, but I have not kept up with this thread and did not read though it.

I recently started incorporating front squats in my weekly routine, and I am struggling with discomfort in my wrists and shoulders when performing the lift. The shoulders are not as bad, but the discomfort feels like tension and pulling and not just the weight sitting on them. My wrists are the bigger problem, particularly my left wrist. It is uncomfortable enough that I am having to cut sets shorts because it is bothering me so much. I feel okay about the weight I have on the bar, so it really feels like a flexibility and/or positioning issue more than anything.

My question given all of that is what things I can do either during warm-up or on days when I am not front squatting to improve wrist flexibility, what form cues or similar I can use to decrease the pressure on my wrists when performing the lift, and what other recommendations I can follow to help with the situation.

I have googled it and watched videos, but I am hopeful that reading it in a different context may be more helpful. Thank y'all in advance for any experience or advice.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'd love to offer you some advice but I have always struggled with wrist mobility on front squats and ultimately just stopped doing them because it was too uncomfortable. I know a few folks on here front squat and can probably chime in with some advice though
CC09LawAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Honestly when I plan on programming them in I plan to just use a towel or straps to hold the bar.

I'm not training for wrist mobility, I'm training for strength. So for me I'm not worried about it too much.

That may not be helpful but just another perspective.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Do you have a recommendation for straps? I've never used them, and I don't know if there is a material difference in all the options.
jtraggie99
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If it bothers your wrists that much, have you considered just using a cross grip?
CC09LawAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I was planning on just using my Rogue Ohio lifting straps that I use for DLs and looping them around the bar. Nothing crazy. They're like $15 and have held up for a couple of years so they should easily hold up to this task.
Hoosegow
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Replace them with Zercher squats - problem solved.
CC09LawAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
This too - I think you can definitely load more with Zerchers once you adjust to the pain tolerance.

But I do have to take quite a wide stance on Zercher squats - does that impact the amount of quad involvement similar to how a low bar squat focuses more on hips/glutes, or does the front loading of the weight make it primarily quads still like a front squat?

I intend to program both in when I get into the Strongman style training so I am gaining straight in both positions.

Ordered the Inzer forever belt today. Also ordered a pair of the Tolos Archetypes 2.0.

https://weartolos.com/products/archetype-2-0-black

Kind of a lesser known shoe but had good reviews and they were on sale for a little more than a pair of Chuck Taylor's. Looking forward to trying the belt and shoes out.

370x5 top set followed by 322.5 5x5 on deadlift today. Had to weenie out and use my straps for the last 3 sets and man that made the reps so much easier - I think it's because it helped extend my reach by 2 or 3 inches. Amazing what a difference something so small can make.

Gonna switch to my anchor template this month, hoping to beat my old maxes by 5-10 pounds while still having some in the tank.
