I think he makes a good point. And it's not guaranteed after paying these massive buyouts that you will hire a homerun. Maybe that's why A&M went with a middle of the road contract when hiring Elko. What happens in four years if LSU or Penn St needs to fire the next guy because it didn't work out? Are their donors going to indefinitely fund massive buyouts until they find their guy?

I think the market is going to figure out that there is no such thing as a "can't miss" splash hire, and the insane contracts to lure coaches are going to moderate.

Especially in an era when you can openly spend the money on players.

An up and coming young coach and a high dollar roster are going to turn out to be a better investment than a 9 digit coach.

Kiffin is great for college football. Period. I like everything about him. Keeps it fun. Doesn't take things too seriously. More A&M fans should be like him and we wouldn't have the early season Klein and Elko hate. BTW, where are those fans now?

Kiffin's current contract is a bit different.

His contract now runs through Dec. 31, 2031. His win against Oklahoma triggered an automatic contract extension. The added year will be worth $9 million with $7.2 million guaranteed.

A Mississippi law prohibits state employees signing contracts longer than four years. Mississippi State and Ole Miss work around the law differently by signing their coaches to contracts with their school's athletic foundations.

He will probably not have to deal with this restriction elsewhere.

It is hilarious to me that so many of y'all have already crowned Elko as the best coach in A&M history. He hasn't won anything yet. I think even he would tell you to tap the brakes until the season is over....and one season does not a coaching career make...

Exactly. There's not exact formula and solution in a coaching hire. Each job is different and so is each coach. It's likely that one coach may work out at one school and fail at another. An expensive splash hire sometimes works. Sometimes it doesn't. The same can be said for the up and coming guy.
