I think the market is going to figure out that there is no such thing as a "can't miss" splash hire, and the insane contracts to lure coaches are going to moderate.

Especially in an era when you can openly spend the money on players.

An up and coming young coach and a high dollar roster are going to turn out to be a better investment than a 9 digit coach.
I don't know. I think we've learned the long, hard lesson that it is all about the HC. And if you can lure a proven HC away then and be successful then that investment will have great return. The fully guaranteed concept might start to fade though, as it should.

Kiffin's interview with Theo Von was good. Worth a watch. May change your mind on him.

Proven head coaches aren't guaranteed to be successful though. You just pay a whole lot more for them. Didn't work for us with Fran or Jimbo. Didn't work out with Brian Kelly. It's not working out for USC with Lincoln Riley. I think Kiffin should stay at Ole Miss. The fit is great and he has a lot of equity there. Why go to LSU or Florida just to be fired?

Would it bd illegal for all the bog schools to get together and agree we're not going to offer these contracts anymore?

This is going to get some program into lots of trouble one day.

Agreed, but there will be others that have to learn the hard way just like we did.

And I could guarantee we still touched base with big name HC's before we went to Elko.

Kiffin is the closest thing we have to Spurrier nowadays.

FIFY

Leach was oddball and sometime hilarious. More often self-deprecating than attacking.

Spurrier was blunt and loved to twist the knife at the expense of rivals/opponents at times, like Kiffin today.

[edit - credit to Poot who beat me to the Spurrier comparison. didn't see it before. ]

I don't like Kiffin but he's spot on on this subject.

He has never won anything of note and neither has Sarkisian . Been close but no cigar. Neither has Elko but I sure like the trend and he hasn't had nearly the shots on goal those 2 have.

Why would you stop your competition from locking in a ridiculous contract that may bankrupt their athletics for the next ten years?

he hated Jimbo

Because of Jimbo's contract

now that he's got a nice little $37M buyout of his own, I bet he doesn't hate him so much

and I still think he's a colossal d bag

Jimmy Sexton is the agent to both of them....

Absolutely agree. Most coaching hires are busts. Even the few that work out, they often crater over time. Stress, burnout, and age catches up with almost all of them.

kiffin is not wrong but how many schools have the $ and luck to make the A&M move and land Elko?

probably not likely even if you have the $, you are more likely to meander the football desert with Sunbelt billy...

It is hilarious to me that so many of y'all have already crowned Elko as the best coach in A&M history. He hasn't won anything yet. I think even he would tell you to tap the brakes until the season is over....and one season does not a coaching career make...

Like when you crowned this team at 7-5?
Ouch. And yes, it's fair to say Elko is as good of a coach as this school has had so long as he makes good coordinator hires going forward and keeps recruiting great.

They should've kept Orgeron. He truly gets LSU.

He was the embodiment of LSU.
