You can't have battered anything syndrome, when you are never given any hope that things will get better. Part of what makes battered syndrome is the batterer promises you things will be better next time. And you are suspicious that's not the case, but you cautiously wait to see if it turns out to be true. And then things get better for a while. And then you start believing that awful thing that happened really is in the past and you will never be hit with that again. And at that very moment....

This in my opinion epitomizes what I think BAS is. Each year you get drawn in and then just as you start to believe "this time is different" the rug gets ripped out from under you. And then each year it takes longer and longer for you to believe, to the point where this year, when it really appears things ARE different, I still am waiting for the rug pull. I don't think I will be cured of it unless we win a NC.

BAS was a very real thing in 1960 - 1963, we just didn't have a name for it. Jim Myers and Hank Folberg were the source of our discomfort.

This. Exactly this. Right down to the graduation year. I was never worried about the games because I knew our defense was world class and could keep us in any games.

Our offense was almost always potent in the run game, and it seemed like we were able to get enough from the passing game to keep drives moving, etc. Never worried about special teams either.

On another note, Dallas was winning Super Bowls back then as well. Basically, BAS and disappointing football seasons didn't start until the late 90s/early 2000s...which is when I started leaning into fantasy football just to have some rooting interest each year.

This! At one point, we were (I think) 2-10 in bowl games. We had great teams so it never made any sense. Those years were highly frustrating.

Bas was created by the pumpers so they could complain ad nauseam while they accuse others of complaining

Pretty clever concept when you sit back & think about it

Seriously this forum is celebrating BAS as Aggie Tradition or Aggie Culture.
So much that it's being picked up and used by talk show's.

I am assuming it originated from this forum, should be fairly easy to figure out who we should give credit to...

Yes so true and let's be honest BAS just isn't football only.
Worst losses in multiple sports usually involve LSU unfortunately.
1989 baseball choke of all chokes to LSU in Sunday( after that point they have now won 9 national titles)
1995 lose to Colorado prior to big 12 onset. Bad loss to backup qb.
Lose to Texas in 1998 (even though we won big 12 title). Hasn't rained in weeks yet Texas field is muddy rc and team only bring short cleats we battle back but Ricky ran all over us and RC out coached again.
1998 at Ou stoops first season we were destroyed by a 500 team which was ready to play.
Bought out of the contract 1996 we lose to USL.
2007 ncaa tourney Lose to lsu on 3pt at buzzer. That team was on a roll.
2012 losses to Florida and LSu should've never happened we were the best team in college football.
Any year at Tech with leach,

So it's been many many years and multiple gut punches that unfortunate you begin to wonder what will go wrong or expect it too happen,

Time Line Zero for the origin of BAS. 1914

Texas A&M had been kicking t.u.'s ass (and others) for several years and no end in sight, lead by Head Coach Charley Moran. In the off season 1913-1914, L. Theo Bellmont, t.u. AD formed a conference quietly behind A&M's back, engaging all normal, annual competitors getting them to join. When scheduling time came, no one in the Bellmont started conference, the SWC, was allowed to play Texas A&M because they were not members, so the Aggies had no one to play. All the Aggies had to do was join the conference to play. Bellmont's condition to join "his" conference: Aggies had to fire HC Charley Moran who had been whoopin' them yearly. So, the Aggies fired Moran to be able to play, and lose their way to success for years to come, t.u. beating them regularly.

It was not called BAS back then and probably did not have a name of that feeling. PTSD used to be called Shellshock.

What we now call BAS, however, started in the 1914 football season, I would imagine.
"Green" is the new RED.

It's a combination of Aggies and annoying coworkers who coined this term.

If we continue to trend this way knocking down doors this year, BAS will just be normal fan anxiety. BAS is the feeling of impending doom. It is normal to be nervous about the outcome of a games.

Y'all are nuts!!!

It started before most of you were born. I remember doing emotional let-down drills at keggers back in the early 1980s.

What are emotional let-down drills? Think of it as snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. An example might go like this, an aggie ball carrier (insert name here) has broken free and is at the 40, the 30, the 20, the 10, 1 man to beat, fumble out of the end zone, touch back (insert opposing team) takes over at the 20.

There were other ones, the Aggies punt, punt returner is corralled, and wrapped up and the Aggies are celebrating....... was he not down? he wasn't down and has broken free, touch down (insert imposing team).

You weren't there for Billy Cannon literally lighting up players on the track and drawing numerous personal foul penalties to extend drives. In the same era, I remember Aggie corners giving 10 year cushions and getting beat on go routes by Louisiana freaking Tech. Also, I remember winning a game when the UTEP kicker missed like a 30 yard field to win off of the upright. We helped introduce Doug Flutie to the nation as this midget of a QB made our defense look foolish much like Manziel did to other teams nearly 30 years later

There was a bright spot for about 15 years from 1985-1999 but its been a tough go for most of my 55+ years of following the Ags. So BAS is much older than most of y'all think

I know nothing!

I was there in '94 as well, 10-0-1, finished AP at #8. Sanctions had us ineligible for conference title or bowl.

Year was 1990 at the 40 Acres. TV cameras in the huddle broadcast the play. Go for 2 with Darren Lewis for the win. Gets stuffed. I was a junior in high school. Made me sick to my stomach and didn't want to play the varsity basketball tournament that weekend. Hate losing to those yellow bellied *******s. That's my 1st recollection of BAS.

It is a phrase that is literally everywhere. TV, YouTube, Radio...

Is this the original post?

The fact that Jack Burton might have coined this phrase is legitimately awesome.

I will forever picture, prior to this post, him spouting this off freestyle on a CB radio on his way home from Houston's Bellaire Chinatown where he just witnessed yet another Dennis Franchione loss.
