I witnessed the worst referee moment in my 48 years on this earth tonight.

Belton Vs. Lake Girls varsity. At Belton. Yes it's a big rivalry. Yes the boys parents had a fight in the stands four years ago. This is the girls. and those people have long since moved on.

BHS has maybe 40 students in the stands, all of whom are sitting within 30 feet of their principal, two assistant principals, two school security guards, and maybe five teachers. Not to mention all the parents to their right. Anyway a few of them were being loud, but funny. They were mostly yelling at the field for being grass and having a crown causing the ball to roll out of bounds(this is legendary at this field. Its really not that bad). That's kind of an old tradition. But they said nothing directly at the ref and whatever they yelled it was funny and not remotely inappropriate. No cussing. Nothing insulting to players. I heard every word and there was nothing.

About 15 minutes into the game the AD and a Belton cop very reluctantly and on orders from the ref had three of them removed. The principal was livid. The APs and teachers were livid. The opposing team's parents were dumbfounded. But the AD said that he had no choice because if he didnt run them they would have to forfeit.

OK. So lets send three 17 yo boys, who are behaving just fine at a school function, out on the street because a ref thought he might have heard something he maybe didn't like?

The AD had an at length one way conversation with the guy at halftime. But he just sat there with a smug smile on his face as if telling him there is nothing he can do about it. And the sad part is he was right. There was nothing anybody could do, and he couldn't care less.

That ref has zero business being involved in any way with our kids. Zero. He sent three kids out on the street and basically made his profession look awful and probably went home thinking he did the right thing. Total idiot. This sport needs to purge themselves of guys like him.

I wish I knew his boss.

School soccer coach here (though in San Antonio). At least here, the coaches can request not to have a given ref ever again. Coaches are expected to be judicious with the power, but we have only ever wanted to use it once.

Coaches can scratch a referee for any reason. They have to be renewed each season.

It goes the other way too. Referees can scratch themselves from doing games at a school or for a coach.

If you scratch what you think are all the bad ones in hopes of getting what you think are the good ones, you may end up with nobody.

This guy was not worth having. He was an embarrassment. We are not an overly passionate crazy place and are pretty easy to handle. He was just clueless. He called a pretty good game on the field but the way he treated the fans was unacceptable.

And if I understand it he isn't coming back. Both administrations including the school Principals were discussing the options with the AD the next day. It was the talk of both schools. Totally unacceptable kicking students out like that.

I do appreciate the feedback on it.

Any time you have to have someone kicked out of the stands you are required to fill out an incident report that goes to UIL and ultimately back to both ADs detailing what happened. It gets routed back to TASO and from there back to the chapter.

My experience is it doesn't always get submitted.

Coaches and admins on duty can (not required but can) submit one as well stating their side of what happened. It also gets routed to everyone. That version almost never gets written. I'll wager most coaches or admins don't even know they can do that.

Man I really appreciate that information. Not sure if she knows that or not but she will.

It was very disappointing. The referees all year have been really good. And he just killed it.

I've got a question for Math,

When there is a foul at the end of the game resulting in a free kick, does the ref have to stop the clock so that the kick can take place. I'm assuming it's ref discretion but I was curious.

It happened in our game last night and nothing came of it. What I found strange was that we had been fouled at the other end of the field and the clock kept running.

It was a sort of "rivalry game" and he was pretty inconsistent, in my opinion and ignored his own ARs quite a bit. Maybe they were making the wrong calls(I agreed with their calls) but I've never seen one disregard them so often.

This is the same guy that walked off the field of a tournament game that our team was involved with a few years back but we have a completely new staff. I only know this because he mentioned it to our keeper, who refs club with.

Unless you are carding for something or an injury needs a trainer then unfortunately there is no reason to stop the game.

HS does say you can stop it "at the discretion of the referee" but I wouldn't. You don't stop it for every other FK so doing it then is an unfair advantage. It's just bad timing.

Now if you thought the opponent was committing a foul just to get a free kick (like an intentional hold), maybe you decide that's unsporting and toss a card.

I thought so but wasn't confident and shut up. In the end, they didn't score off of it and so we won.

NCAA soccer has a rule that allows for a referee to keep the clock running on a cautioned foul when he/she determines that the foul was committed with the intention of stopping the clock. The interpretation is that you can also stock the clock the other way if the foul is for the purposes of wasting time. If any of that makes sense. This rule is not in HS soccer though.

I drew the double line last night. Worked with Larry and Mo though. I am definitely not Curly. These two chuckleheads had new and innovative ways to enforce the HS rules that I'd never seen before. Both schools were winless in district for varsity and JV.

JV game had a fight with 4 red cards (1 and 3) and 6 other yellow cards. Ref had no clue and I felt bad for him. He starts asking the coach for the team with 3 red cards "what do you want to do?" and I'm wondering why. The coach has no choice in this.

Varsity game had 11 yellow cards and 2 red cards.

First red card was a DOGSO-foul by the home GK in the 2nd minute of the game. It was so clear that the GK was taking his gloves off and walking off the field before the referee caught up to the play. There were audible groans that felt like "Not again". But the Ref came over towards me (AR2) and asked me what I saw so the GK had enough time to put his gloves back on and start getting his wall together before he got the red.

2nd red card was the DOGSO foul by the opponent in the exact same position as the 1st half. This was with 12 minutes left. Ref had to come over to me again and ask what I saw. I'm thinking these two cards are stone cold but I guess it wasn't as obvious to him. Who knows.....

The winner's of state will probably come from D/FW in the girls game. Hopefully we can stop that.

Nope. Why end the streak?

It is crazy how in DFW the bi-district and regionals are typically harder than the semi finals.

Well our goalie just texted the team to let them know she has a concussion. She was the only goalie on roster the entire season. Luckily we pulled up the JV goalie for playoffs, but not the news you want before the first playoff game.

On the upside we don't rely on our goalie all that much, we had 87 goals and only gave up 14. 8 of those 14 were in two games, 5-0 loss to Rock Hill, and 3-1 loss to Atascocita, and those were our first and fourth games of the season. After that we never gave up more than a single goal in a game.

At least your keeper didn't NOT tell the coach she broke her arm in warmups and gave up 2 goals because she spilled cans of corn.

Big changes this year with the small school and big school brackets. We have already seen what amounts to 1 v 2 seeds match up in bidistrict. Same with 3 v 4.

Yep, there's going to be a couple of teams that are not even top 15 winning state.

Seven aren't the same team they have been the last few years. I think they get past Cy Ridge and Ridge Point but they'll run into the Elsik buzzsaw soon.

Losing Morrison really hurt them and I agree. Elsik looks like the Vamos Ramos of the past.

This split division playoff is making crazy Area matchups in terms of distances.

Boys Galveston Ball v Consol

Girls El Paso v Amarillo

Those teams would never match up that early before.

The only difference the split made was taking out the 3rd round matchup where you faced the bottom half of your split region. There may be some awkward matchups that may have never happened due to lower seeded teams not matching up against higher seeded teams which caused them to lose in bi-district in previous years, but the same districts still face each other throughout the playoffs. The easiest way to look at the changes is to just take out the old round 3 of playoffs and the rest is the same.

It's made a HUGE difference for my daughter's team this playoffs. They're 4A so maybe this difference isn't as impactful as 5A or 6A. Daughters district is made of 7 schools. They're all single high school districts. 3 of the schools have an enrollment of around 1250, 1 school is around 1100 and the other 3 are around 700-750. So there's a huge gap. The bidistrict is very similar with 3-4 schools around 1250-1100 and 3 800-700.

Daughter's team is one of the 750 enrollment schools. They can fill a varsity but don't have enough for a JV team. So this new playoff system allows them to go to the Division 2 route against other schools their size rather than getting paired up with a 1200-student school. Now they have a shot at advancing deeper considering they don't have to play against schools with mini-college campuses dubbing as High Schools.

Maybe 6A is different but Allen, Coppell, and Duncanville (large, single school districts) competing in the same division as Richardson or Lewisville (multi-school districts with smaller enrollments) seems more competitive. And As I type this, I see matchups for Coppell v Lake Highlands (RISD) and Flower Mound v Richardson in Div 1.
King Koda

My point was that the distance of matchups shouldn't really be affected all that much. For Region 1, Bi-district is still 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8 and area is 1v2 winner vs 3v4 winner and 5v6 winner vs 7v8 winner. The big difference is you go straight to regional semi from there instead of playing another game vs 1-4 or 5-8 depending on if you're in the 1-4 or 5-8 pods.

I do agree that it opens up state championships to many of the smaller schools, but the big size differences are still in 6A where you may have a 3,300 school vs an 8,000 enrollment school where in the past it could have been 2,600 vs 8,000.

State championships have always been very DFW/HOU area dependence at the top levels for most sports. It will be interesting to see if this opens up opportunities for other areas to win more than the occasional state championship.

Got knocked out by Stratford last night in OT. It's the second year in a row we've gone to OT with them but it didn't work out in our favor.
