For Scotland to advance they need the following:

  • Egypt to beat Iran
  • Spain to Beat Uruguay
  • Iraq to win or draw with Senegal
  • Uzbekistan to win or draw with DR Congo
They could also have any of these happen in place of the above but it seems far less likely:

  • Ghana beat Croatia by 3+ AND England win or draw vs Panama
  • Argentina win or draw vs Jordan AND Austria beat Algeria by 2 OR Algeria beat Austria by 4
Had they scored at least one more goal at any point in this round the math would be so much easier. It's not looking good for Scotland right now

Scotland watch today:

Scotland is currently barely clinging on to the final spot in the 3rd place table.

  • Group G needs to have Egypt beat Iran.
  • They will be knocked out of that spot today and there is no possible way it doesn't happen. 1 of Cabo Verde or Saudi Arabia will pass them regardless of the result of the match. They do need Uruguay to lose which would mean the 3rd place team in Group H would have 2 pts and not advance.
  • In Group I, they require a draw between Senegal and Iraq or a very narrow Iraq win. A Senegal win knocks them out as does an Iraq win by 3 goals

Yes Iraq can win by 1 or 2 at most.

'And they need a similar thing on Saturday for Group K. DR Congo tie OR win by Uzbekistan by 3 or fewer goals.


Also South Korea is basically in the same situation on 3 points they just have a better GD. So they can afford 2 teams to jump Scotland but not 3.

On top of Scotland, South Korea are officially on the watch list. I thought they had a bigger buffer, but there is a decent chance now that they get knocked out as well. The group J 3rd place spot will jump them tomorrow no matter the result between Algeria/Austria.

Only scoring 2 goals in their 1974 opener vs Zaire at Dortmund was the real disaster. Closely followed in 1982 by conceding 2 goals to New Zealand in 1982. Goal difference did them in both times. And yes, you can apply that argument to their 1978 campaign too.

Irritating that Paraguay's stultifying draw with Australia yesterday will see them through. They had about two minutes of quality on offense the entire tournament (goal against Turkey), but will move on. Scots would be a lot more fun.

Scotland and South Korea need some very particular results to keep them alive. Scotland is pretty screwed. South Korea is on the cut line.

Scotland needs all of this:
  • Austria to Win by at least 2 or Lose by at least 4
  • Argentina to Win/Draw
  • Congo to Draw or Lose by less an 4
  • Croatia to Lose by at least 3
  • England to Win/Draw
South Korea needs 2 of these 3 things to happen:
  • (Austria to Win or Algeria to Win by at least 2) and Argentina to Win/Draw/Lose by 1
  • Congo to Draw or Lose by less than 6
  • Croatia to Lose and Panama NOT to win unless they win 1-0 in which case S.K. would be okay (and there are potential conduct tiebreakers or whatever they're called if Panama wins 2-1 and I'm not about to look that up)

I think almost all of that is likely even - except DR Congo will beat Uzbekistan and ruin their day.

Congo tied Portugal and lost a narrow game to a good Columbia team. Whereas Uzbekistan lost to both badly combined 8-1. And Congo has everything to play for and Uzbekistan does not really.
