Yeah, you TOTALLY thought he was going to average 29/7 with a 22 PER as the leading man on a contender.

And just for the record, the first round against Utah that year was his big blow up series. He was solid against Phoenix and not very good against Golden State.
I have an entire groupme chain dating back to when he left for NYK with all my DFW buddies saying just that actually. You don't shine when it matters and then fall straight off. The potential for brunson was clear as day from the moment he started getting major minutes. It's why a lot of us posters were clamoring for him becoming more of a focal point in the offense well before the Utah series.

But, just go ahead with your typical ***** arrogance Infection. I can only imagine your bedside manner. Stain.

Yep, you knew more than every NBA decision maker who decided to not give him a contract anywhere close to what that projection would justify. Including the team that spent way more on him than anyone else was wiling to. You even accurately predicted a statline that essentially no player like him has achieved since the Vietnam War.

LOL
Numerous Mavs fans, including myself, were incredulous that Cuban didn't max offer Brunson (who was inarguably the 2nd best player on the roster).

I still think, Brunson was planning to leave the whole time. regardless of what he and his father have put out in the media since,

He also disappeared when bigger defenders were on him, and there were real concerns about if he would ever be able to figure out that out.
Also, could you play him and Luka in the same backcourt?

Despite any of the above, Im with you. That was still him very early in his career already playing at a near all-star level.
For the right price (which he has since said he would have taken if offered) we were stupid to not make that offer. He is a true floor leader, creator for others, playmaker for himself, just incredibly high basketball IQ to go with elite playmaking.

Oh my gosh Halliburton thought he hit the GW 3 and did the Reggie Miller choke and now it's going to be overturned to a 2 and the game is going to OT.

For real. They've let them be so physical at the end of the game and in OT. I like it. Still good offense.

That was a fantastic game. This series should be amazing.

Is it just me, or is nobody talking about the greatness of Rick Carlisle? He's on the cusp of taking a 3rd team from the middle of nowhere to a title. This Indiana team has even less star power than the Mavericks did.

Great coach. 2011 is his only finals appearance/win.

02-03 Pistons ECF lost to Kidd/Carter Nets
03-04 Pacers ECF lost to Billups/Prince/Rip/Wallace Pistons
10-11 Mavericks won Finals
23-24 Pacers lost to Tatum/Brown Celtics

Luka's only real sin was not being able to make it work with Rick.

Maybe, coaches like Carlisle just have a certain amount of time before the players stop responding too

He seemed to always wear a scowl, like an unsuccessful Popovich. Appreciate the title run, but it was time for a change.

Rick is head and shoulders above Kidd. Biggest complaint I had for years was how long we stuck with role players, and I never knew if I should blame Rick for making them too useful, or Donnie and Cuban for being too loyal.

But not playing guys like Roddy B and Justin Anderson.

Carlisle wasn't perfect but he's always been an A tier coach. Everyone loves to sh*t on his playoff record post 2011, but there was never a series where the Mavs were favored and he squeezed every ounce of juice out of those rosters.

We all have bemoaned his rotations at times and asked why he wouldn't give some young guys a longer leash but how many guys went on to do anything outside of Dallas? Anderson, Roddy B, hell even Josh Green who I was a devout acolyte of...they all peaked when coached by Carlisle.

I just wonder how much things would have been different if the Mavs roster building were as competent as Rick and Luka were at their jobs. I think it's entirely possible that both are still in a Mavs uni and we've already hoisted a second Larry O.

Yeah, when did he ever have a Riley/Pop/Auerbach/Jackson roster?

If the Pacers win tonight and then beat OKC in the Finals with the roster they have, it would be one of the great coaching jobs in history by Carlisle. (Up there with the job he did when he used smoke and mirrors to beat the Lebron superfriends team with guys like Jason Terry playing big roles at the end of their career)

GENERALLY, in the NBA you've got teams led by guys who were top 10 draft picks. When you look historically, you find that most championship teams have at least one star that fits this description playing a major role for them. The Pacers have three guys on the roster drafted in the top 10, Obi Toppin, Benedict Mathurin and Jarace Walker. Toppin and Mathurin are bench rotation players, but not the drivers of Indiana's success. Instead it's a group of mid to late 1st round guys that are driving the ship here.

Incredibly they don't have a single player on the roster that was even a top 5 draft pick and no one that's universally considered a star. Haliburton was rated as the most overrated guy in the league by his own peers and he's the closest they have to a star.

The Raptors in 2019 that beat the crippled Warriors sans Durant and Thompson are the only other team that didn't have a top 10 pick starting for them (in the searching that I did going back quite a while) but they did have a star in Kawhi (despite him being a whiny biotch).

The 2004 Pistons who are usually cited as a "weak" championship team had Rasheed Wallace, Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton that were all top 10 picks starting for them.

I think Halliburton has erased the overrated label after this year's playoffs. While he didn't play a lot last summer, he was picked for a stout USA Olympic team too. He's definitely not terrible.

That Pistons team was full of younger energy players that could D up and play their specific role amazingly well. Perfect team to take care of a more overweight and less motivated Shaq, peak ball-hog Kobe and over-the-hill Payton & Malone.

Off topic

But one thing we will miss out on (assuming the Mavs don't get this together) is some great playoff series vs Houston or SA. Both teams should be in the playoffs moving forward and would've been some awesome rivalry battles. Now just seems like that will never happen
Im so tired of you negative ass clowns.

The Mavs will be better with Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg and Kyrie than they ever were under Luka.

Hard disagree. Harper plus getting that 2030 swap back works perfectly for the Mavs.
