the surplus value is probably mostly in relation to the team control years. Allen is Arb1 so we have him for three more years.
Allen isn't versatile like Dubon, but he's an elite defensive middle INF. We didn't have anyone in the system to plug in to SS if Pena goes down. It makes sense to add him if you're un loading Dubon's contract.
In a vacuum, I don't love the deal. However, I think we're seeing a very aggressive salary dump (Walker next) because there is going to some big moves coming. I think we add a high dollar starting pitcher and trade for another INF (Donny or Lowe).

By designating Urías for assignment and trading Dubón, the Astros freed up money they can spend in their pursuit of pitching

I called it in July, the minute they traded for Correa, Dubon's HEB commercial days were numbered.
According to FG we're at an estimated $218 M in luxury tax payroll. That means we have 25 M to spend and still be under the tax. If we move half of Walker's deal we'd have 35 M. $35 should be just enough to add a Lowe / Donovan type, major SP, and backup catcher.

The only prerequisite is that the coach name starts with "Co" then is followed by a double consonant, then ends with "ins"

the Astros media really pumped up Dubon's versatility and defensive value and everything...
but heavily glossed over his woes at the plate
.644 OPS and OPS+ 78 with 12 GiDP's and just 24 walks in 398 plate appearances
Allen is actually worse offensively (quite the accomplishment, must have machete as his hitting coach) but defensively is every bit as good. It's all about the money savings but hopefully it means he is a true utility guy and not getting 400 ABs (or even 200).
Nick Allen is literally sleeping with the enemy. He's married to Brett Boone's daughter. He also looks like he's 12.

Cole has played plenty of CF in the minors, so he would be an option. Melton as well. You could also go outside the org. Signing one for more money probably isn't the play. Maybe you can land Nootbar and Donny from the Cards. I wouldn't hate that. Make Belly your big FA signing?

Also ignoring the news from the beginning of the season…that Dana was pushing Smith to learn to play CF…that could be the solution with good up side potential for power from the position.
