The difference between Tennessee and Texas A&M WBB: Kellie Harper is a good coach. Funny, though, if you look at her coaching record at Tennessee. In her time as coach, she finished -- 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, and 4th in the SEC conference, with 2 NCAA second round appearances, and 2 sweet 16 appearances (qualified all 5 years, but due to Covid her first year the tournament wasn't held) and was fired because she didn't live up to their standards.

Meanwhile, in our first 3 years under the current leadership, we've finished, 13th, 9th, and 16th (dead last), with a first-round exit in the NCAA tournament in year 2.

Current takeaway --> Investing in WBB vs Fielding a WBB team/program.

Let's take it a step further and look at Holly Warlick (predecessor to Kellie Harper). She finished 1st, 2nd, 1st, 7th, 5th, 4th, and 8th. (elite 8, sweet 16, elite 8, elite 8, second round, second round, first round). The rabid fan base demanded a changed after the last 2 years of what they considered mediocrity. The AD agreed and made a change. The standard they have is so much higher than what we have, even after Gary Blair built us into prominence.

There are reasons Tenn expects more from women's basketball than TAMU, Went to the first SEC women's basketball tournament near Atlanta. 40-50 Aggies fans there and Tenn had over 4,000 fans there. Went to the next 3 conferences tournaments and same fan turn out. One of the tournaments was at Little Rock so can't use distance as excuse for poor Aggie fan turnout. Went to the Big 12 tournaments and usually less Aggie fans there than any other school. .Even when the tournament was at Dallas.

Look at the support for Texas A&M women's tennis now that Mark has built a perennial powerhouse. It's not yet what it should be, but that forum is probably the most active outside of football, baseball and softball.

Outside of football and baseball/softball, our support for most other sports is pretty sad. However, you're not going to get butt in the seats with what we have currently. We need someone to inject something positive into the program.

So great programs and coaches don't happen over night.......... you can't change coaches every 2/3 yrs and expect immediate results..... you have to build from ground

I would say that after year two I was hopeful. And then the transfer portal absolutely destroyed any hope I had for year 3. It was shocking to say the least. I can give a pass for year 1, the roster losses in year 2 after a better year (still not great) was eye opening, poor roster management for year 3 was shocking, and the lack of recruiting is another mark in the wrong direction. She does well at talking about her Olympic success and creating a good beyond basketball community. I am deeply concerned about how many we will lose to the portal once it opens. You're adding 2 recruits that we don't know a lot about and might need to add 5-7 more from the portal depending on what happens in 2 weeks. I don't think we are in a position of strength at all.

One thing that concerns me about the portal is that most of the athletes entering are unhappy where they are currently due to playing time, etc. Adding a lot of those personalities is recipe for disaster. We have quite a few of those on this roster and it didn't end well in terms of success for us. AC has been the only really great transfer in terms of production. Ware is a positive influence on the court - I'd say she'd be my #2 transfer. Outside of that - I wouldn't rank any of the others as being impactful.

I'd also like to point out that I'm not trying to be negative; just keeping the thread going as a point of debate. I've accepted that this is what we will have moving forward (there have been no signs pointing to a change in leadership and with Buzz possibly moving on after this season, I'm sure the resources for a coaching search are going towards his replacement).

I think it's a wait and see game to see what's happening with Buzz after the season. If you listen to Trev's interview on TexAgs, it's pretty clear he's not moving on from her. He doesn't feel like she's had enough time and isn't sure she's had everything he needs from her (and he didn't hire her). That is the only coach he could be referring to at this point.

What could you possibly sell a recruit when you're the coach on the hottest seat in the country and what do you tell a transfer who's looking to go to a winning program?

I've said it twice and that's what I take from listening to his interview. Until I see anything else happening, I think it's pretty safe to assume that's what's going on.

Here's what you have to read through these situations. Is Trev going to come in and tip his hand before he's ready? Absolutely not.

It's the "vote of confidence", which we see from ADs all the time, who still end up with coaches being fired.

So- you can't read into that.

Then- wtf do you actually read into "blah blah blah, I can do more etc"?

Trev ain't gonna come in and coach women's basketball practices. The staff ain't short of money. Trev can't do anything about NIL.

Trev is doing what he should be doing as an AD- you can't read too far between the lines on what his puff pieces mean for the next few weeks.

Unless you expect an AD to tip their hand in TexAgsRadio of all places.
