I'm not saying you are wrong, but if push comes to shove, it's obvious MBB is more important to the school than WBB. I don't see them expending resources in a coaching search for both programs. The portal opens in 2 weeks.

And I don't think he was tipping his hand per se. He was just explaining his philosophy for coaching and program changes. There seems to be some confidence with Joni and staff from within that we don't see.

According to Wiki she makes $250k a year at GC, so whichever program plucks her away will be able to do so for close to gratis.

The question is does A&M just want to field a team. If so just hire the cheapest coach available. If A&M want to have a winning program then it's going to cost. In my opinion the best coach out there is an Aggie with a proven track record as an A&M assistant and a head coach at Miss State and now Texas. I have heard from a personal friend of his he really wanted the A&M job when Blair retired. I would guess it would take his buyout and a competitive salary to get him. So it appears a decision needs to be made whether to field a team or get a proven coach. I would also ask the question about available coaches: why are they available?

Even if he is an option, I just don't see us paying the buyout. He is making $2.3M and with his extension that goes through 2029-30 season increases $100K per, with the final year being $2.6M. Then we have to buyout the assistant coaches- and pay ~$3M + new assistants salaries.

Nope. Unless someone wants to blow a lot of money on women's basketball, the tu coach stays where he belongs, at tu.

Would you be happy with him being our coach if that transpired?

this is not going to happen. He has said he only wants to coach to a certain age & he is fast approaching that age. $$ & age = NOT COMING TO A&M

Oh, I don't disagree. I just don't understand the negativity towards him from a few on the forum. It may be warranted, I have no personal experience with him other that knowing he's a tremendous coach. But, to be upset at him for coaching at a rival institution is odd to me. We have people on staff in many of our athletic programs that played for and graduated from rival colleges.

From what I've heard from friends who are close with him & his family - he's a fabulous human. I think those that are most vocal about him at tu - is the fact he went there as a die-hard Aggie. It is what it is - he will finish his career at tu

Agree - we missed out. That's on us. Cannot blame the man for furthering his career and succeeding. I'd expect nothing less from an Aggie grad. I'm sure he is very upset at what he's seeing going on now at A&M.

I've state that this would be the move to make to reverse Schloss. You take our winning baseball coach we take your WBB HC and bring Vic home.

It's a lose lose situation for all parties. He would never get the NIL money here he gets in Austin nor the interest. IMHO he will not succeed here as he has there. Then what happens? Firing a former student always results in hard feelings.

I'm not sure he would be interested. After all, he could not wait for Blair to retire. And Blair did not owe him at all, especially after he went out of his way to steal Blair's players.

The story I always heard was Blair always wanted Vic to be next in line when he retired but A&M wanted him to get head coaching experience before they would make him a head coach here so he went to Mississippi State making them a contender for the majority time he was there.

People mad at him for going to t.u. is very strange to me because if the story above is true, the administration at that time turned their backs on him long before he went to t.u. I personally don't blame him at all and wish him the best. I can also say he's a great guy and Ag no matter where he's coaching.

There is a reason they went after Joni and not Vic. I remember early on in the process when someone ran into Vic and asked him about it he made the comment, "unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed." It's not that he wasn't interested, but it seems like he was never even considered or contacted about it and that there was a reason Texas A&M looked at Joni. If you can remember, coach Yo was rumored to have been contacted as well.

And your comment about wanting Vic to have head coaching experience rings true if we remember that even KBW wasn't seriously considered for the position. Was she interviewed? Yes. Did they have any intention of ever offering her the job? No.

Coach Blair stayed on too long and that created issues with the replacement process in hiring someone to follow Gary.

I'm not sure I agree. The year before his last year he won the SEC and had a team that should have and could have made it to the national championship game had they not run into a hot Arizona team that did make it to the national championship game. I think Gary Blair was forced out. Their reward to him for forcing him out was a farewell tour that killed the program, and now we are suffering because of how it was handled.

But, hey, they named the court after him. Yay.

actually the Athletic department got a LARGE donation - and when they asked the donor what he wanted - he said he wanted the court at Reed named for Coach Blair (I don't remember the whole story)

took some digging - but found it

Yep. But then our craptastic faculty team insisted on a minority hire instead of a white guy so here we are.

Only 38% of women's basketball coaches are men according to this article (and presumably the % that are white is even smaller):

https://www.d3hoops.com/columns/around-the-nation/2022-23/women-coaching-men#:~:text=There's%20no%20reason%20why%20a,information%20available%20is%20for%202021.)

Quote:

. . . There's no reason why a woman couldn't coach men; there are certainly plenty of men coaching women's teams 38% of women's basketball head coaches are men. (All NCAA statistics in this piece come from the NCAA demographic database. The most recent information available is for 2021.) . . .

So it doesn't look like the white male approach is favored. Is there some sort of study that shows they fare better?

I'd be very happy with a female coach of any ethnicity that is a proven winner. I'd be happy with ANY coach of ANY ethnicity that is a proven winner. I am praying that Joni can turn it around here. Based on her time at Georgia (average) and her time here (below average), I'm not confident it will happen.

If we maintain the status quo with coaches, isn't NIL money the next best solution?

NIL by fans is probably an indicator of fan enthusiasm. But right now it's a headline topic and the House settlement could retire today's fan NIL influence.

But the judge does not want that outcome.

we bought the best class in football and the coaches still couldn't win with it.

This notion that NIL can magically replace coaching is crazy.

But its another way for our fanbase to blame the fans, the coaches are gods here
